Sore throat right side and enlarged right lingual tonsil for a year

im really out of my mind and stressed about my situation.

im 32 yr old male, smoking for 14 years but light smoker for the past 9 years (5 cig a day)

anyway its all started a year ago with numb throat pain on my right side. i thought its something viral that will go away and after arround 2-3 months it did ease abit but never went away, 3 months ago the pain started to intensify only this time i started to feel pain in right side of the tongue along with the right sore throat but i couldnt see anything suspicious, a month ago i have pulled my tongue out and saw a lump, deep on the right side, i went to my gp wich was very concerd about it and send me to a mouth specialist, while waiting for my appointment to the specialist i went to th ent wich saw it and gave my antibiotic and cream for the lump and sended me to urgent us scan of thyroid..

couple days later i went to the mouth specialist wich said its not likely to be cancerous and identified the lump as an enlarged "lingual tonsil" but with not special pathology. she told me that she though that i have acid reflux as she saw traces in my throat and also told me to not take the antibiotics that the ent gave me as it wownt help for the lump. she also thought she feel some enlarged lymph node in my neck so  she sended me to do a us neck scan and continue the check with endoscopy from ent and also a gastro specialist to make endoscopy to see if there gerd problem and prescribed nexium. meanwhile 2 weeks passed and the nexium has no effect , the pain is still there in my right side throat and also back in my right side tongue. i had a neck ultrasound a week ago  wich said no evidence of enlarged lymph nodes wich is so weird as i fill like my neck is swallen, tight. i should have an ent appointment this week but im suffering so much i have no idea what to do next.  i feel alone in this as i have found anyone on the internet with same problem as mine, i searched many places but couldnt find a similar person with same symptoms and im out of my mind for what this could be. im very concernd about cancer as this started a year ago. also im almost sure that my throat pain is related to the tongue pain from the enlarged lingual tonsil.

please if anyone can advise or help me or have any similar symptoms please reply my thread and share, im desperate this ruining my life and i dont know what to do anymore or whats going on.

Melissa that's great the biopsy came back negative. I'm really sorry your symptoms are coming back though. What did your ent say?

My symptoms have gone from bad to worse. I saw the maxfax who works at a top London cancer hospital. He took the time to explain in detail why he thought I didn't have cancer (unlike the ent). He did a scope and couldn't see anything. I left feeling reassured. Then that evening I started getting excruciating pain in my left gums and back of throat. I didn't sleep for 2 nights. My left cheek has been getting more and more swollen. My left gums are swollen too. Dentist says nothing in my teeth would be causing it. I was referred to a neurologist who said I am not a typical case. He recommended another MRI. I get the results tomorrow. I went to another ENT who as soon as he saw all my tests dismissed the idea of pursuing the cancer route and sent me away with nose drops.

I am at my wits end. Do I just keep making different ENT appointments in the hope one of them will say ok something isn't right here and we need to do more tests? I'm draining our savings with all these medical bills. The stress and worry is ruining my life.

Your not a alone, I too suffer from the same condition. I'm 50 and have the same symptoms from the pass five years. Every time I make an appointment with my doctor it clears up and they don't see anything wrong. Now it's gotten so bad it's effecting my breathing. Next week I'm going to getting a CT scan hopefully they will find out what this is.

    Hi Everyone

I've just been reading this thread and I wondered whether anyone has a diagnosis of anything yet? I'm also suffering from similar symptoms, started last August. Initially felt like a sore tongue like I had an ulcer, but nothing to be seen, dentist referred me to maxofacial guy, MRI showed nothing apart from some inflammation of the brain! A neurologist then saw me and said get some neck relaxation as nothing to suggest why I was having the tongue pain.

At the end of my tether - it feels like it's got worse this past 6 weeks, neck and ear are hurting, and at the back of my throat where my tonsils used to be there is a red area that seems to go down the back of my throat.

Interestingly, my symptoms don't seem so bad when I first wake up...I know I'm extremely anxious about cancer (I had total thyroid removed two years ago because of it)...I can see on the internet that tongue, burning mouth, throat and neck pain can be an issue with people with extreme cancer phobias...maybe we have that in common?

    I don't know :-(. Just know that I've had enough :-(

Hope you're all feeling better and these symptoms are just a "glitch" for us all!!

The terrible pain I started experiencing 1.5 weeks ago turned out to be that I needed a root canal on a tooth. My neurologist then said everything I have been experiencing came down to that.

So far I've been told my symptoms were down to lingual tonsilitus, rhinitius and now the infected tooth that needed a root canal.

I pursued a 4th opinion with an ENT who agreed to do a 2nd investigation of my swollen lymph node.

I have to be proactive with my own health and although I would love to go away and believe the professionals I've seen so far that I don't have cancer I don't feel that I have had all the tests to prove this so I need to pursue it until I am satisfied.

Yes I'm really hoping this is just a blip for all of us.

I have the exact problem as your describing.. Sore, lingual tonsil. Feels like it is rubbing against my back molars.. sometimes wakes me up at night.. this has been going on for about 4 months.. have been to dentist, GP's .. no specialist yet. I did have dental work about 5 months ago! making me start to think perhaps it is bacterial. I have some antibiotics given to me this morning by a second opinion GP. I decided to go to this doctor because my lymph nodes are up under arm and groin. Anyway lets see if this makes any difference. Oh, I am with you all with the awful lingering cancer worry. Interesting all medicos have said nothing looks suspicious..  So, if antibiotics don't work then I will be off to Oral Med specialist.

I'm having similar problems as well. The very far back of my tongue hurts. I can barely see the area but from what I can tell, it is red and a little raised in some spots. It is behind the regular big bumps on the tongue so I'm guessing that it is on my lingual tonsils also. I went to the doc 2 weeks ago and she tested for strep but it was negative so she said it was a sinus infection.. because at that point the roof of my mouth was hurting more than anything and I also had sinus drainage. Well a week later I went back telling her that it had gotten worse but she said it was probably just sore from something I ate or possibly could be a viral infection. She gave me the antibiotics at the first visit for the "sinus infection" but they didn't really do anything for me. Here we are going on 3 weeks with symptoms and no answer. I did have one good day today but tonight all of the sudden the pain came back. I'm seeing a doctor tomorrow for an ultrasound of my throat because my doctor says it looks like I may have an enlarged thyroid. But I don't think it's related to what's going on with my mouth at the moment. I'm really thinking about checking myself into the emergency room tomorrow after the ultrasound if this pain continues. Also..I find it curious that this happened last time in early spring as well. The doc said it could have been hand foot and mouth disease then.. although it looked nothing like it. It eventually went away. Maybe allergies? But to what? And how do I prevent it? Any answers of other stuff?

Any updates jordan? Ivery had a sore throat on my right side since august 2016. It's now March 2017. I went to an ent in September who brushed me off. My pcp a handful of times and a new ent today. He scoped me and noticed my right lingual tonsil..which we can't see by looking in our own mouths bc it is at the base of our tongue was inflamed. Just the right side...yup the side that hurts me. He said it's commen with ppl with acid reflux.. I hated his answer. I feel like I just wouldn't randomly wake up with acid reflux after 31 yrs on this earth. I'm a single mom of 2 kids under 4. I'm always tired. BUT Ive convinced myself I have lymphoma. I googled the lingual tonsils and what woukd cause them not to be asymmetrical....of course cancer is the leading cause. I'm concerned bc when I was 20 I had hpv. Which I had to get surgery to remove all the bad cells in my cervix. My friends mom just died at 55 yrs old with oral hpv. I guess it's the leading cause of throat cancers now. .and usually start at the base of the tongue where the lingual tonsils r. I'm freaking out to say the least. The ent said he'd like to follow me..and see me in 6 months. hello I'm in pain. And u see something inflamed in my throat with no cause.Have you found any answers? I feel like my anxiety is going to kill me. Thanks for listening

I've had very similar problem on and off for several years. Discomfort on right side is bothering me again for several weeks. I also get tonsil rocks, thosel nasty calcified bits that build up in the tonsils. Went through all the same stuff a few years ago, they said it was gerd and I need to take antacids along with all my allergy meds. Very frustrating. I'm concerned about cancer as I was a heavy smoker when I was young but I quit over 30 years ago. Always good to know we are not alone in our ailments and concerns. Good luck.
