Sore throat that won't go away. Menopause??

Posted , 25 users are following.

So I'm 51 female, happy, life is good. a few months ago started feeling a cold coming on which included a sore throat. 10 days later sore cold gone sore throat still here. seen my Dr who says it's just stress. I didn't even know I was stressed??!! I've been back again, still says it's anxiety and stress. I was prescribed something for stress but have not taken it yet. could this be menopause? other than the sore throat I'm completely healthy. But the sore throat and Web MD scare me. Anyone else going thru anything similar. Thank you

i had a sore throat constantly and it was my mother who suggested to me it was probably allergies as she also developed allergies during peri. Of course at first i didnt listen but then started taking reactine 10mg daily and no more sore throats. May be worth trying an allergy pill for just a few days even to see if it gets better as a process of elimination.

I had a month long sore throat which was pretty much the beginning of perimemohell. I think for me it was when EbV reactivated. Like when you have a sore throat if you had mono as a teen.

But, didn't know what was going on at the time. Dr Google had me convinced I had cancer. I went to an ENT who scoped my throat and just saw redness. He suggested maybe silent reflux. Then I changed my diet after reading what can cause silent reflux, lost 30 pounds in a few months. And got really sick. Soon it was a lump in my throat and I felt like I couldn't swallow. Anxiety from constantly googling. Started seeing specialists, having tests upon tests. Sicker and sicker still..

So my point in all this, just don't go down that anxiety google rabbit hole. A sore throat can be from many innocent things like allergies, too much a/c in your house, dehydration, etc..

So so true...Web MD HELL!!! I'm going to stop worrying and try to do some basic home remedies...lemon drops, honey, stop drinking booze and see if anything helps. I have other slight symptoms also that make me think it's perimenopause or menopause such as nighttime sweats, heart palpitations, and recently crazy real like dreams that leave me shaken upon awakening. I appreciate all your feedbacks, it's so calming to me. Hope it gets better...SO ANNOYING!!

Perimenopause. I have flu like symptoms for months now. Sometimes with a sore throat and chest congestion, block nose, feel feverish, but all test are normal, no fever, no redness in my throat. Sometimes I also get a lump in the throat feeling, at the moment I have pain around my neck area, feels like my lymp nodes are swollen but a trip to my doctor says its OK. The pain comes and goes only when I press on it. I think its anxiety.

We are all in this together, it's so depressing.

Oh, and it can be from perimeno too. I was exactly 51 when I first got that sore throat!

I was hoarse for at least six to eight months. I went to an ENT, he found nothing. One day I woke up, I have no idea when, and I was no longer hoarse. This menopause is something else.

OMG same!i will be 51 in august. i noticed swollen lymph nodes back in november followed by a sore throat that wouldnt go away,( going on 6 months now) the pain got bad enough to go to urgent care. no strep, doc said post nasal drip or allergies took allergy pills and flonase, didnt help much . second visit to UC still nothing, got an anesthetic rinse. i called a few days later to ask for a referral to ENT he scoped, found nothing reluctantly prescribed a zpack and hot salt water gargle helped a little but still went in for a followup ent insisted it was nothing to worry about (i did want to rule out cancer) he said a biopsy would be very painful and he disouraged it Another month and it started to get better, but just this week it came backSo frustrating! So im moisturizing, vaporizing, taking allergy meds, rinsing, and taking tylenol. Spent $2k in docs, dont want to go back again Hopefully is related to peri and will resolve itself over time

I had this exact symptoms five years ago when I started perimenopause , it's back again now and it's been 2months. I feel like my lymph nodes are swollen, pain in my throat, post nasal drip, chest congestion, headache, doctors can't find anything. They say it's anxiety and have prescribed tablets. Not taken it yet. Trying to manage the symptoms.

Just know you are not alone.

Thank you very much. Ive leared so much in the last year from this forum. I too was perscribed anxiety meds which i think is a poor treatment for us women going thru menopause. I never have taken them. Tried to reassure myself it was menopause related and after 7 months my sore throat finally went away. Now ive had a dull pain in my middle back the size of a quarter that wont go away. And of course my mind takes me to the worse case senario. But again im chalking it too up to be because of menopause. Reading up on the 66 symptoms of menopuse was VERY eye opening for me. Thank you for responding. It's so reassuring to hear others are out there and that we can support each other!!

You poor thing. I went to the doctors twice. My throat and my heart was racing and beating out of my chest. She perscibe me anxiety meds which seem to be a common treatment they like to perscibe us women going thru menopause. Everything else checked out fine, CBC, etc. So after reading up on it and all the support on here I decided I wasnt going to freak out and I wasnt going to keep going to the doctors, She wanted me to go to ENT and I never did. I decided to NOT take any pills, and NOT go get scoped. I decided to chill, and chalk it up to good ol menopause. And after 7 months it finally went away and has not come back as of yet. I know its all menopause related. Hope yours subsides soon. Try to stay calm, know there are many of us going thru the same thing. Im here if you want or need someone to talk to. Here are some other symptoms im currently experiencing

Dull pain in middle of back

      fatigue

      L side neck pain

      dizzy spells

      Earache that comes and goes

      Heart palpitations

      Rapid heart beat

      VIVID crazy dreams

Hi, I keep getting a sore throat, flu like symptoms, lymp nodes in my neck feels painful, keep getting headache, sore arms, you name it, been to see numerous doctors. Done Tests. But so far nothing found. I ask my doctor to send me for xrays, he says no need.

I worry so much which brings out anxiety and I've not had a good sleep for weeks now.

Not sure when it will end.

Wow, this is really interesting! I'm glad i came across this forum. I have been suffering from the same symptoms for a while now, and have wondered if the swollen lymph nodes in my neck were at all related to perimenopause. It now seems that this could very well be the case. I was 100% certain that the heart palpitations and racing heart were hormone related because i'd get both symptoms around the same time in my menstrual cycle. I've had the swollen glands, sore throat and ear aches for months now. At first, i assumed it was allergy-related, but antihistamines did nothing. Then i wondered if it was hormone- and/or stress-related. I noticed that the symptoms would get worse a day or two before my period and also after i experienced an especially stressful day. I also considered that maybe an iron-deficiency was partly to blame, so i started taking iron supplements. Recently, i had a week's reprieve from the sore throat/ears, but i noticed a localized pain (dull ache) in the middle of my back (a very small area along my spine), which i thought was due to exercise or posture.

I'm 47 and know that i'm in perimenopause (thanks to other symptoms like vaginal dryness and random swelling of my gums), so it makes sense that all of these issues are thanks to wonderful hormones!

I also had mononucleosis and was hospitalized when i was 18, so i was wondering if that has anything to do with the throat issues (my doc told me that i'd likely often have throat pain as a symptom of illness for the rest of my days because of the mono infection)

Anyways, thanks so much for sharing your experiences, Ladies! That eases my mind a bit. Now i'm not going to bother dust-mite-proofing my apartment, as it's probably not allergies 😃
