Sore to touch rib cage

Posted , 40 users are following.

My problem is at my left flank side I think the 10th last rib connected to your sternum, when I touch, press or rub the lowest part of the 10th rib (waistline).. it hurts like sharp pins and sore, inch in lenght and size, after a day my right flank develop the same but milder.

It doesn't hurt when breathing/deep breathing, eating, laughing, stretching or even sleeping on that side, when i'm not touching it, it feels burning or like something stuck in my ribs.

Does anyone know this or have the same experience???

I had the same problem for 18 months.  The sore spot was in the same place all the time.  It even mirrored on the opposite ribcage sometimes.  I narrowed it down by a process of elimination and believe it was caused by a proton pump inhibitor drug (taken to treat reflux).  I stopped taking the proton pump inhibitor drug and the pain went away completely.  (it returned when I re-started the reflux drug)  Doctor finally did some tests and said the ph level in my body was FAR too alkaline.   The proton pump inhibitor had turned off the "acid" producing mechanism in my body, which upset the Ph balance.  Just as a side note, I also had really horrible brain-fog, which I had not connected to the rib pain.  The brain-fog cleared up too when I stopped taking the drug.   I hope this works for somebody else, it's such a frustrating thing to have.

How long were you off the reflux medication before the pain in your flank subsided?  I have had the flank pain for over a month and stopped taking my dexilant only two days ago after a few years of daily use.  Thanks.

Curious what you're doing now without your acid reducer. I assume you took it for ulcer or reflux issues. Are you back to having issues from over acid production again?  I take Prilosec daily for acid reduction. I was diagnosed a few years ago with a stomach ulcer and esophageal irritation and was told I could potentially be on an acid reducer permanently. I have had the lower left rib soreness described by many on this site for years now. I sometimes take myself off Prilosec for a few weeks to a month but can't say I've noticed a change in the rib ache. I do notice stomach issues creeping back up though and I end up back on Prilosec eventually. Seems I'm only trading one problem for another. Sigh.....

this is such BS. your body's ph level doesn't ever change. if it does, u die.

I'm still suffering with this almost 2 years later. GP has suggested fibromyalgia now and I'm waiting to see a rheumatologist in October. It has never got better but also never got worse...

Hello Everyone, I have had this condition for many years. It comes and goes as it pleases. I was DX with Fibromylgia 10 years ago and have assumed it's just part of the package. For me it's worse on the left side for what ever reason I don't know but I do have nerve issues related to the left side of my lower back, is it connected idk. But here is a question one thing that makes mine worse is wearing a bra. It feels like I am being crushed so I have gone to wear 3X stretchy bras so it's not a tight around my ribcage. My pain is actually where my bra going around me. I recently lost my health insurance (USA) and I have been lowering my medication with 2 goals. First, seeing what I really am feeling I've been on some medications so long sometime I wonder if my body has changed and maybe I don't need it or as much. Second, to lower the costs of the medications. So that could be why I am experiencing this pain now. I just elimated Cymbalta and I am lowering my Neurotin each day. Once I am off both I am going to re-evaluate my pain levels and go from there.

When I am feeling this pain I usually can't wait to get my bra off and using a racer bra instead does help. Not sure why. My pain levels were really elevated after I had a gyne procedure at day surgery I believe it was a bad reaction to the anesthetic I was home from work for a week like someone had beat me with a baseball bat.  I had a breast reduction 4 months later this is all around 10 years ago but it was after that experience about 6 months later I was DX with Fibro. I needed up on a 50 mg Fenynal patch for years but last November I was able to get off of the patch with the help of prayer. Which by the way I was having dealing with years of UTI's and after I got off the patch my UTI's went away. I believe the meds were slowing down my body's systems which kept me from emptying my bladder fully. So back to the ribs I use a TENS machine and heat to help with the pain. The TENS was covered under my old insurance and I have had it for years you only need to purchase new pads as needed. I have found it helpful and comforting. One thing I like about it too is it's small and if I am in pain but need to go to work or wherever the TENS helps me tolerant the pain while I am out. It clips to your belt or waist band and you can shut it off and on when needed.

Just for another note prior to my DX of Fibromylgia when I kept complaining of pain everywhere the doctor ran an antibody test which came back with a positive ANA meaning to my understanding that there are antibodies in my body attacking my body. At first they thought Lupis but mine is unspecified. So basically for no apparent reason. I hope my story gives you some insight but I am curious about if some of you can relate to the bra issues.

I also have the same symptoms. Mine is on my right side. Lower rib cage and towards side. Several spots or areas that feel bruised. Not large area, but spots about the size of the tip of my finger. I have no idea what this pain is.

I also get this a lot.  It is really painful and feels like you have a rib broken or something.  After seeing a specialist pain management doctor today he confirmed this was part of the condition where you become "tender" in lost of areas of the body.  No cure tho!
