Hi All

i would like to know if anyone has speech problems.

For about 1 year I have been forgetting words while in a conversation  but now I have a stutter when I talk to anyone even family, and my mind goes blank and I forget what the conversation was about. I am so embariest. I am going to the docs yet again, last time I was told it is anxiety but if it is I should not get when I'm with my husband or family. I am now 55 don't leave the house on my own, I sleep 16 hours a day and now I can not speak right.

sorry about  going on but I need to sometimes.

once you learn to cope with this illness it throws something new at us. I hope that all people with ME/CFS are well as can be.

cheers

Yes, one of the terrible things about this illness is you never know what new symptom will pop up. It's very scary. I haven't had your exact problem, but I do sometimes forget words, and I often will think I'm writing one thing and then reread it, to find I've written something completely different. I also get letters switched around when I'm writing, in addition to words. Before I got ME/CFS, I was a writer/technical editor. I could never do that now. One thing: I'd be very wary of a doctor who's trying to fob off symptoms on anxiety. I mean, if you're feeling anxiety and telling a doctor's it's a problem, that's one thing. But that doesn't seem to be the case with what you describe. Anxiety and depression are often the go-to's for doctors who don't understand this illness and its many possible symptoms.

l think most with cfs, me, fibro, do get speech problems, be it slurred or getting mixed up, forgetting things, l also do it with typing, l,m now having to check it all the time, due to forgetting letters, words, spelling. l personally think its also part of extreme fatigue, even healthy people if pushed to the limits of fatigue would be simular, most people arent. Even when l manage 6-7 hrs sleep at night, l can drop off to sleep 3 or  4 times a day, sit down on sofa and away l go, lve fallen asleep sat upright at computer, in a theatre, its like youve been drugged, and l often wake up feeling worse.  Although l go out less, and for shorter times, maybe just supermarket leaning on trolley, just that extra energy used leaves me feeling tired to point of feelling achy and ill, get a taxi and drivers who l know and chat to on way down, can hardly string a sensible sentence together, and trying to makes it worse, rushed gobbledy gook, l imagine they think its either  drink or alzeimers. yes its embarressing, what can you do, explain or let them think what they want. l think it understandable your preferring to go out with support, and l and many have had gps put symtpons down to phycalogical anxiety depression, maybe they beleive it or not but find it easier than going down the diagnoses and lack of affective treatment route. Some dont even seem to realise how important it is for patients to get a true diagnoses, mine was the same, well we cant do anything about it etc, but  l think diagnoses is often made by a rheumatologist, ask gp if you can be referred. Good luck, your not on your own or odd.

The speech problem most common with sufferers of ME/CFS is Anomic Aphasia, whereby we forget words and obviously sufferers have degrees of that and it sounds like you are having a version of the problem quite badly.

I tend to have it most of the time but it's far worse when I've been doing to much, or the ME/CFS is at it's worst. Yet another symptom that gets added to the long list unfortunately and to be honest I try not to worry about it. I've told those who need to know what happens when I'm like that and they just have to accept it.

It is frustrating I know but it's a question of trying to alleviate all your symptoms by trying to find a way of living that suits you, in terms of hours resting etc..  Don't feel guilty about feeling ill! It's your doctor's job to help you and if you feel your doctor isn't being helpful, find a new one that understands the condition, the support of a good doctor makes alot of difference I've found...

I get this too and am sure it is symptom of M.E. as I was not like this when healthy. I can start off a conversation fine if not too tired but after about 30 mins feel like my brain and thinking have slowed down and can't think of words or take in what other person is saying. I have friend with M.E. who loses her voice all together when tired. Make mistakes when typing too and can't follow long TV programmes or films. I find that listening to relaxation CDs helps as you are resting your brain as well as your body when doing one and always find I can think more clearly after doing one. You are not alone!!

Hi Elaine, hope your days going along okish. lve felt rough today, and not even exerted myself to cause it, just from waking, so really lazy boring day.  Weather simular, grey and rainy on and off, still warm, but looking  in on wimbledon its seems to be sunny there.oh to be at wimbledon, lt said on the news some are paying 30000 for a front row ticket for the final.  Spectator sports my limit now, l think even table tennis would be a struggle, might try it on a good day, today it would be tiddleywink participation, Hope your having a reasonable day, but r and r this week, adnd with a bit of luck youll get your break away to enjoy.

Hii Lynne, had quiet day yesterday resting - fed up in house on my own. Better day today - managed to meet friend for lunch but feel shattered now. Just watched dog programme on TV and really made me want another dog but too soon to get one. Bit worried about how I'll get on going away but am just going to rest the next few days and will try packing in stages over a few days. At least I'll have no housework or cooking when away. Think I'll take my MP3 player so can listen to relaxation tracks if I feel exhausted.  Could even listen to one in the car if I'm struggling. Hope you're having a better day.

hi Elaine, l have days like that, usual symptoms, varies a bit, not a lot, but days l get really down, bored, fed up, stir crazy, l think  the weather doesnt help, very dissapointing after going through long winters and then yet another summer of just the odd sunny days now and again, recalling couple of weeks back when we had those few sunny warm days, light tops on, out in the garden of wherever, we all seemed a bit brighter with it

.  l woke this morning early felt really down, l think sometimes if youve had bad dreams you wake worse, plus l,d to go to hospital today to see rheumy, l pushed gp for appt, then didnt want to go at all, rainy out, tired, didnt want the journey and rest that goes with it, but nees must, she was quite officous, no empathy or as much as a  smile, but okish, chatted, talked about physio, she mentioned vit d, sent me off for blood test and xray, waiting, must have took 3hrs in all, but over and done with,  results later.  l missed the dog prog, the rescue one l guess, l got my last rescue dog from rspca, you can look online at rspca nearby braches, and dogs trust, a huge one in our area, shows you pics and a bit of into about age temprament, l darent look, so many lovely dogs needing homes, l,d be so tempted, if healthy l,d def get another, if rich with a big place and grounds half a doz, but being realistic one is more than enough for me. But last time l lookedd on rspca site, it was 90percent staffie x, used to be all types,  but l guess that is the breed of dog most handed in or  taken in now, taken over as chosen breed by some types who neglect abuse.  l cant recall ever seeing a retriever in either rspca or dogs trust, certain breeds  you dont. Maybe after the summer is over before winter starts might be a good time, l dont know abuot you but l always felt a bit more secure with a dog, and theyve not been guard dogs that would worry anyone, but did bark at least. l guess  you go off on Saturday, might be time for the weather to take up, but change of scenery r and r. sure youll enjoy once you get there.  Hope your journey isnt too long, tape and reading will pass the time on journey.  Take care lynne

Hi Lynne, I always find hospital appointments really tiring. All the waiting,  trying to keep enough energy to hold a conversation with medical staff, getting tests done, etc. Always feel totally drained after appointments. Ended up with loads of these for my back at one point, MRI scans, seeing different consultants in different hospitals and after all that was told there was nothing they could do and would just have to live with it! I try and avoid doctors and hospitals now if I can as I never seem to get  anywhere. Probably get on better trying to find things out for myself. Feeling quite down and exhausted again today. Made myself go for short walk and saw man who lives nearby with his retriever. I walked with him a bit and took his dog on lead. It felt so much better walking with a lead in hand - just makes me want another one but still grieving Brodie. The house is really quiet without him and like you I felt safer with a dog in the house. Keep noticing strange noises and feeling stressed. Am going away next week but even more worried about going now as I feel exhausted. Should'nt have gone out so long yesterday but was fed up in house. Hope the weather is better near you today. Cloudy, windy and showery here. Make sure you try and rest to recover from your hospital ordeal and hopefully you'll pick up again. Elaine.

hi elaine,  Hope you feel a bit better  when its time for you to set off, and the break does you good once you gt there, its the journeys that are a turn off.  l really didnt want to go yesterday, and didnt expect much in either attitude of specialist, or any wondrous pill to improve things, but had to give it a go, and it near 3hrs with waiting etc.  lve not been out today, felt usual from waking, its climbing a mountain each morning, just standing and moving to start with, did the essentials, fell asleep again on sofa l0ihs for an hour.   l have felt worse myself the last week, even less energy strength than usual, which freaks me out, not being sure if its getting worse or just a bad time, l guess the weather doesnt help, l went into the garden on a bright spell, just a l0-l5min job, essential one, and l was shattered, breathless, so back to sofa, lve spent more time on the flaming sofa in the last few month, than in the last 20yrs, God give me strength and patience. l even watched some tennis yesterday and not a huge fan, but daytime tv boring, l,ll enjoy olympics, l know how you feel, stir crazy, l push myself to go out, and its often hard going, but to get out as much as poss, and its not a lot.  When  youve lost your dog it really makes you feel strange walking without them, someone,s missing. lve always had a dog, my parents wouldnt let me have one will l was about 8 or so, despite pleading, think l used to pull a wooden one around, l think when your ready for a dog or puppy it  will be of benafit to you, as they do motivate, whether walking, or just getting up from bed to take care of them. The weather,s been poor, bit of sunshine a lot of grey cloud and rain, not as warm either, had heater on a few times. l think the summers get worse each year for last few years, and winters milder, l cant recall wearing my woolly hate scarf and gloves last winter, lm usually well wrapped up, there was just those two freak winters with the snow a few year back, l bet its bracing where you are in winter, gusty. Well live in hope the summer will arrive yet, and energise, it helps l think, though not this  week, l bet a lot are low on energy this week, maybe envoiramental adding to all.  l really hope it takes up for you, bad enough we see and hear constantly about so many we know or see going off abroad, so would be good if weather was decent for uk hol.

Well whenever you go hope its good for you.  take carelynne

Just a quick reply as trying to save my energy. Sounds like you've had a bad week so really hope things pick up for you next week. Such a frustrating illness as so many things you want to do but can't. Been there so many times. Have really not felt right since I lost Brodie as feel  I can't relax even when I'm trying to rest as it's like something is missing. Have done a silly thing on impulse. Noticed there 5 week old retriever puppies for sale very near where we're going next week so phoned and arranged to have a look at them if there are any left. Probably really stupid thing to do as probably too soon and not sure where we'd get the money from but not obliged to buy them only looking. Will keep you posted. Get plenty rest and look after yourself. Take care. Elaine

Hi Elaine,   Have had a bad week, today best day, maybe fine weather helps, as not quite as fatigued, though have had frequency and lower hip pain nagging into top of legs, but  tbs l find pain easier to cope with than the severe fatigue.  So used my bit of energy and fine weather, into town quicik visit, and a bit of gardening, about half an hour clipping back with hand shears,  shouldnt bhe hard as it really only your hands moving, but did feel knackered after just half and hour, and that covers about l 20th that needs doing, maybe more way everythings growing like mad, but will get gardener in to do most, it would grow quicker than l,d cut it, snail pace now.   Well l hope the weather is as good as today and you get a good break away, maybe fate their was puppies in area your gong to,  l go from being very cautious, thinking planning to totally impulsive, a few year ago l fancied a rabbit, nostalgia or something, as theyre the messies pet to care for, buit put word round, went to get a lop got talked into having two by desperate owner, both girls he said, put them on the floor at home and they started rogering, only one cage, that was the start of problems.  So now my son will say `are you hving a rabbit moment` But you are wanting a retriever puppy, just go by your heart, l guess they cost a fortune, pedigrees seem to be getting mor expensive, but  you,ll see and decide, l cant imagine how cuddly they must be, cant recall ever seeing a retriever puppy, seen lab ones, a friend recently got a choc labrador puppy. Is your husband happy to look at puppies or doing it for you.but know what you mean, when youve always had a dog your home seems empty and lonely without one, anyway hope  you have a good holiday, and the weather stays as today, been nice, not too hot, warm enough, and goodluck with making right choice for you.  take care lynne

Hi Lynne, back from hols today and absolutely shattered but enjoyed it when away. Went to see retriever puppies and think you will guess what I'm going to say - have reserved one and will get her in a couple of weeks! Can't really afford it but my parents are going to lend us some of the money so will be cheap and cheerful meals just now. Need to rest as much as possible to build up energy for getting her as I know a puppy will be exhausting but it will get easier in time and be worth it in the end. Hope you've had a better week. Off to bed now - feel like I could sleep for a month!! Elaine

I am like that too, always losing words, forgetting what I was doing, saying, going to do.  I also lose my voice when really fatigued and that is a sure sign I have overdone things.  I just try to describe the thing I am talking about like saying the black thing for water for tea when I forget kettle.  My grown kids think it is hilarious and to be honest, that is the best way to look at it.  We can't change things so we have to find ways to accept and live with them.

My grown sons also think its funny, as l come out with gems of gobbledy gook or have a mental block and forget  a word or name that l know very well, but it goes, l play up to it a bit at times, such as if my sons name goes for a second, l,ll say `whetever they call you`, we both laugh, though there are times it gets beyond a joke, walking away from cash machine without the money wasnt a good one, but  for me its how l,m feelling in other ways, such as today, when the fatigue gets to the statge of making me feel ill, sleepy, flushed up, achy, bit sick, fit for nothing then its a real drag. These mbs are such a saneline in a way, brings back a  reality and knowing others the same, takes some of the anxiety away.
