spiro test from 71 to 66 in 2 years

My husband has been diagnosed with copd and his spiro reading has gone from 71 to 66 in 2 years. He is 54 and still smoking and in denial about it all. He doesn't foresee the terrible life he is heading towards. He thinks he will be unhappy for the rest of his life if he has to give up. He's tried before and he got so anxious and angry it nearly wrecked our marriage. I've been trying so hard to get him to give up but I can't force him. Does this reading sound like the copd is advancing fast or slow? At the moment his health is fine - sometimes a mild cough in winter. Any idea how long he's got before things will change?

Hi i am really sorry to hear this. COPD is a slow process unless your a smaoker and it can progress quite quickly. I have copd and was a smoker only gave up 0ver 12 months and was in denial i was diagnosed 14 years ago and it is the most horrible disease and ive only just found out i have 34 % of my lungs i am 44 and my year age is 90 since i stoped smoking i am 77 ok not good but better than 90 so it aint all bad there is sometimes light at the end of the tunnel its just hard to accept the way thing are sometimes. im nearly housebound cant go very far at all without help and they are doing lung reduction which isnt great but better what i am now. You can ask your copd nurses if your hubby can go to pulmonary rehabilitation and that opens the door for a lot of support and help the main things to help copd is stop smoking and excercise so keep active as much as you can. I am on home oxygen 4 hours and i am on the treadmill 20 mins in morning and 20 mins at night. and another thing try and keep infections down make sure he takes all his medication and inhailers hope it all goes well  best regards

    loz xx
