Hi I posted a couple of days ago regarding side effects of levthyroxine. I read the reply and took it on board. However my GP insisted I started it as she said my thyroid wouldn't get better. I was already taking Vitamins daily and was slowly feeling better.

Now Ive started this 50mg stuff I feel quite bad again. Very tired and no motivation and generally feeling rubbish . Im taking it at 7AM I only started it yesterday and feel worse for it. Does it get any better or is this it? Im not depressed but I feel this medicine must be having a negative effect.

Yep you are right. Just went for a walk round the local park. Felt absolutely dreadful tired dizziness sensations and just feeling bad. Although before the walk I was pretty OK throughout the day. Like I said before Christmas eve I was making slow progress  towards feeling better. Taking vitamins everyday, now im on this rubbish it feels like it did when I first caught glandular fever bloody awful. No doubt if I say to the Dr Im not okay with this lethyroxine. She'll just say you need to give it a chance and all that stuff they come out with. Im no conspiracy theorist but I reckon this med is designed to knacker your thyroid past redemption then putting you on it for life.

Your last statement is correct. This is not a natural form of thyroxin. The body recognizes it as foreign and creates an immune response to the synthetic Levo. The Levo is similar enough to our own thyroxin, that , once the body reacts against the synthetic Levo, the immune system is now triggered to respond to other thyroxins, iodine and other parts with similar structures as the Levo. It’s basically a recipe for autoimmune thyroid disease. So yes, if your body reacts badly to Levo, the longer you’re on it, the more you risk advancing autoimmune disease.

The last couple of days Ive been down with what I think is FLU. My immune system must be re calibrating or something. Im guessing its a FLU because my Dad went down with it starting on Christmas day and I felt lousy two days later. Just wondering does it take longer to recover from viruses once you are hypothyroid. Been bed-bound since Wednesday still taking the lethyroxine daily too.

Jelly, are you usually bed bound when you have the flu?  If this is not normal, it could be a symptom of the medication.

Your question about the immune system and whether thyroid disease is related- yes! Most definitely. Thyroid diease is autoimmune, triggered by chemical exposure most often.  Once the immune system is triggered, there tends to be

more sensitivity to environmental triggers. This medication can worsen autoimmune disease, and can cause other autoimmune conditions. PLEASE! Read the insert that comes with your medication!  Once you’ve read the insert and see the side effects listed by the drug company, you’ll know  better what to watch for.

Last, the thyroid gland is located directly above the main immune system  lymphatic drain point.

And the thyroid gland is positioned smack dab in the center  of the highest concentration of lymph glands in the entire body. Although the thyroid gland is not recognized the related to the immune system, it’s positioning indicates it is likely highly related as an immune system regulator.

      Hope you feel better soon.
