Starting naltrexone today

Hi. Haven't had a drink for 10 days but really depressed today. And know I need a drink. This is why acamprosate would have been useful, essential really, as I've no willpower when the addictive head comes again.

So I took my 1st tablet at 1. Going to let you all know how I get on with it. I've tried it twice before. The first while I was at Cygnet Hospital Harrogate, 15 months ago. It was prescribed to take everyday for a year to prevent cravings and relapse. I stopped taking it after 3 months as I felt like a zombie. Since then I've learned from Paul that, I wasn't taking it correctly.

The 2nd time I tried it was last June but it made me so ill( worse than a hangover, if that's possible!!) . Stopped taking it after a week as couldn't cope with the side effects.

So here goes, fingers crossed..

There is a discussion going on about Antabuse on another post but I've explained my experience with that deadly drug. I am so angry with addaction and the way it treats us trying to find a way to conquer our illness. And the fact that they are stuck in the dark ages where alcohol addiction is concerned and can't be bothered to look into more recent advances. They obviously find there cushy jobs are more important than saving lives. Though I was told by alcohol advisory service( nothing to do with addaction or NHS) that there is a very big turnover of staff due to I only presume, there lack of care for us struggling with alcohol.

I looked up alcohol advisory service (some time ago when you first mentioned them) and it comes up with Addaction's address and phone number, for Leamington Spa.

It must be different in different areas. They are charity based and only offer counselling..

And the fact that I was put on naltrexone by one of the most reputable dr/psychiatrists in the UK 15 months ago and was prescribed it wrongly. So I failed. The other reputable dr/psychiatrist, put her patients on campral. If I'd seen her I wouldn't have just wasted 15 months of my life, or if he( Dr B.) had given me naltrexone correctly, I might not have been here now still struggling.

On that note I am doing ok on taking naltrexone correctly, time will tell. 6 days in .. I'm definately not craving alcohol or drinking as much as I did. I do believe, fingers crossed, I've found a good solution. That works.

I still feel very tired, not much appetite or get up and go! But it's early days. I've decided to stop tomorrow and see what happens.

      Fingers crossed x
