statins are important for health

hello, i have been reading a lot regarding statins and its side effects.  I have been taking off and on for the past four years in fear. My sister was also diagnosed with familial high cholesterol and was taking statins for a short time then stopped for the past three years or so.

she has now been diagnosed with heart blockage and her cholesterol was sky high 9. she needs to do angiogram and stent if required.  it started with her sweating, chest pain and all.

so I request those with high cholesterol please do not be put off by the wrong info on the net. there are no side effect.

A friend of mine has been taking for 10 years and more and he is running around..he is in his late 40s. and I asked him if he gets any side effects and he said nothing. he feels fine.

please avoid heart blockages and other related diseases because of cholesterol

thanks Jenna

There are no side effects!!!!!! I'm afraid you have little idea what you are saying Jenna 123. I was only on them for two weeks but in that time they almost finished me off, twice ai was rushed off to A&E, I was incapable of doing anything and it was very frightening. Yes they suit some people but they kill others, I would never take a stain again and I always try and warn other people of what may happen.

Hi Trisha..sorry to hear about your predicament but please let people make their own judgements regarding the taking of statins. you might unknowingly make someone very sick by not taking statins even if it is indicated.  perhaps you were taking a high dose. Atoravastatin 10mg is harmless and does reduce cholesterol with right lifestyle and exercise. please do talk over to your doctor and see alternative if it cant be lowered with lifestyle change. the clogged arteries can be very dangerous and the subsequent medical intervention can also be expensive.  we should avoid that be more aware.  I have noticed most people get angry and act without thinking of the consequences rather than thinking calmly and talk with a medical profession.  if the cholesterol can be lowered with lifestyle changes, then it should be done but if its familial then it cant be lowered naturally.  I have no side effects except from age related aches and pain, but still do yoga properly, aerobics, jog, and go dancing with my friends with no impediment. maybe reduce your dose and change the statins.  I wish you all the best and hope you recover soon.. God bless

Yes Jenna 123 and advising people to take statins could also make them very sick and possibly kill them.My dosage wasn't high, nor was my cholesterol and these things are handed out like sweets to every person regardless of consequences. I know what they did to me in a very short time, from being fit and healthy I was turned into a zombie completely unable to function. Yes they suit some people and you have been lucky but they do not suit all and to say they have no side effects is just ridiculous.

there may be side effects on high dosage. but let the doctor take that decision as familial high cholesterol and diet related are two different things.   the patient can decide if he or she has either of this and can make informed decisions. again i emphasize the danger of high cholesterol being block arteries.  then its up to the people - people need to be aware and be positive

spot on Trisha.  I too was on a low dose - 10mg but the effects on my health were severe and very swift to occur.  GP's are instructed by NICE (who in turn are under the influence of the pharmaceutical industry) to give statins to anyone with a 10% chance of a heart episode - that's probably almost the entire population for heaven's sake - regardless of their full medical situation.    Major fact - high cholesterol alone is NOT the primary cause of heart episodes and more fact - the increased risk of type 2 diabetes as a result of taking statins is much more likely to cause heart issues.  Scary stuff.

Hi Anthony, yes mine is familial, means you have inherited from y our parents. my late father had both high cholesterol and high BP. I have both. My sisters have high cholesterol. I am on statins as well as on hypertension medications.  It was known to be familial cos my dad had it plus I had a high of 8 reading and it was not going down despite weight loss, change of diet, exercising etc for six months. only few points down. so it was termed familial. if it was diet related, then it would have gone down drastically.  thank you for your good wishes.

Hi jenna , this disease sounds very much the same as Glycogen Storage Disease,to which my son-in-law has, something about not being able to degrade glycogen within hes liver , i know not same thing ,but he as just had a tumor the size of a orange removed on he's liver, he as missing gene inherited from hes parents the ,DBRANCHER gene ,  this just me thinking outside the box but i have always wondered how the cholesterol gets into the bloodstream in   the first place is there a manufacturing site in the stomach on minimal hours , and should be on 24/7 hours lol, is that why a statin as to be brought in to do the job , just me but i think something to do with mucosal lining  of the stomach letting in to much cholesterol is that why they tell us to eat oats /porridge because it linse the stomach,Beta glucan, i'd better stop now i'm going on a bit lol .

Hi Anthony, I wouldnt know about the water tablet. its best to ask your doctor.  There are lots of new bp tabs out in the market. the old ones give a lot of side effects.  find out more and check with doc. I am taking Telmisartan 40 mg. for the past 2 years..no side effects...for cholesterol, if its not familial, then lifestyle change would help a lot. I wish I had non familial...
