It sounds as if you could have got adhesions , which can be a complication after surgery . Because the surgeons will have handled your bowel in some area near to your ovaries & fallopian tubes , it means you are at risk of developing adhesions . This is when parts of your bowel stick together . You can have surgery to free the adhesions , but then you may be at risk of developing more problems with them then . Be carful with strong pain killers though because they can cause constipation .

Iam so pleased to have found this forum, as I have felt very much on my own since I was sterilized by laparoscopy at 40 and have suffered ever since with terrible pains that I never had before, mainly on the lower right side. This was 30 years ago!!!

The pains were worst immediately on coming around in the recovery room and carried on for weeks when I got home. My male GP assured me things would settle down, but I was frequently in agony and taking the Ponstan (mefenamic acid) tablets regularly, not only during periods but also mid cycle or just any time, which I was not happy about, living on strong painkillers.

I was having heavier and more painful periods which were getting more frequent, usually a 3 week cycle and lasting longer than a week. The pain was either continuous pulsating or like being stabbed with a knife. The GP only commented that "women of my age often have problems with periods", but I had never had such pain before.I asked for the clips to be taken off, but he laughed at the idea and said it was not possible. (Surely, this is not true)

After a year or so of miserable pains day and night and repeated worrying visits to the GP, I was admitted to hospital for a further laparoscopy to investigate my problems only to be told everything was in order! My periods lasted till I was 60 years old (unbelievable but true, my mother was the same), so I had 20 years of unbelievable pains

. Since then I still often have the same righthand side pains, not so severe, but enough to make me uncomfortable or stop me getting to sleep, or wake me up. A friend suggested it could have been adhesions all along. On complaining again to a new lady GP, I have been back to the hosp for a third laparoscopy to investigate whether adhesions were causing the problem (I had appendicitis when a child) I was told I had only slight adhesions & everything was in order but the pains have carried on. I was given some antispasmodic tablets to take, but I cannot say whether they help or not as need to take them for some time before pain goes away, and it might have gone away anyhow!!

I have been at my wits end for so long and have advised my two daughters never to have this operation. Something from the sterilization caused me to suffer like this for 30years, without the medical profession admitting the operation can have this devastating effect. However, a friend (wife of a doctor) said this problem is well known because its your body's response to get rid of a foreign body inside you!! This seems to make sense. I do hope, however, that I am unusual and that all you other ladies on here do not have to suffer as long as I have. It seems that, at my age, I am stuck with it for the rest of my life unless i can find some miracle cure!!

Hi I was sterilized the end of last year after my 3rd child and get alot of pain on my left side especially mid month which is like a stabbing pain and a couple of days before my period but the pain is at it's worst on the first day of my period which includes stabbing pain on left side as well as the cramps. It's so bad I have to take the day off work and have to take Naproxen and paracetamol which helps. I would really like to know what causes the pain as is concentrated on one side.

I know this is an old thread, but was so shocked in reading this, I just had to reply. I got sterilized(clips) when I was 21. A couple of weeks after, I got sharp agonising pain on right side for two days followed by swelling for the next two weeks until my period arrived. I have suffered every month like this ever since...so only felt good for a week out of every month. I did go to my doctor many years ago, only to be eventually sent for a psychiatric evaluation concerning this pain!! Unbelievable! .... Months later, I plucked up the courage to speak to a female doctor who instantly told me it was ovulation pain and PMT. I had neither of these before I had my operation yet I had both two weeks after it?

I am now going through perimenopause which is absolute bliss on the months I don't ovulate. Finally no more pain! No more swelling!.........hot sweats are an absolute dawdle to the three weeks of pain and discomfort I suffered every month. I hope the rest of you will not have to wait as long for relief.

havent wrote for about 2 years since my last post, im now 26, my children are 5 7 and 9, beautiful little people, I have always always regretted my decision to be steralised, ive been told that i needed to have counselling before having it done to make sure it was the best choice I NEVER HAD IT.... 5 years on im still regretting having it done but i cant get it done on the nhs which is fair enough but the operation is so expensive ... Mr Pickles in nottingham is highly recommended. Google him, (or on facebook)

i wish there was some way women could see this who was thinking about having it done i wouldnt recommend it AT ALL sad

If anyone wants to personally email me - Lizzie Sinton is my facebook page. Feel free to email smile x
