STILL HAVING PAIN AND STIFFNESS 10 WEEKS AFTER THR

I am a 60 year old in good shape that had right posterior THR 10 weeks ago.I have pretty good mobility but am still experiencing a lot of pain and stiffness.I cannot sit for long periods of time or walk for long distances without pain.In fact I have to stand for a moment after sitting a long time and then gingerly take a few painful steps before I can get going again.Went back to surgeon and he checked/xrayed hip and all looked fine.He said the pain is due to connective tissue and muscle he had to move and cut during surgery that has to heal.He gave me a cortisone shot in the pain area which only helped for a few days.I am tired of hearing so many success stories of people in their 80's that were pain free and walking around after only a few weeks. The worst part is the pain at night and havent had a full nights sleep in weeks.Has anyone else experienced a long drawn out recovery from THR  that I am going through?

I have to get going on standing too, as I tend to seize up even after quite a short time. I would like to know how the Duke of Edinburgh managed without a stick or anything to support him to attend the wedding of Harry and Meghan, at the age of 96, nearly 97. At least he did not have to walk up the steps but took a back entrance, which would have been impressive if not impossible. He attended the Royal Windsor Horse Show Last week only about four weeks after surgery.

We don’t know what procedure he had, what meds he is on or anything much but you can bet he will have had the best! He will have had a comfortable reclining chair not a hard vinyl hospital chair, a bed which supports effectively and daily expert Physio not left alone with a duplicated sheet of exercises!

Who cares what procedure he had, he will have had his hip chopped up and a prosthesis banged in like the rest of us, he is 96 years old and was prepared to appear on TV in front of two billion people without a stick or crutch in sight. Good for him, I am so impressed.

Hi Rod. Im 6 weeks post op Posterior approach. Since I found this forum, I've come to realize we all heal differently and at our own speed. I made the mistake of watching YouTube vids of people walking un-aided after a week and thought myself a failure.

My advise? Do your exercises, ice, takw pain relief when needed and be very kind to yourself. Your body has been through a massacre of sorts. You will come along fine. Continue to come on here for support. These "hippies" are amazing!

    Good luck to you!?

Hi Rod, I am now 12 weeks post op posterior thr and have improved a lot over the last 2 weeks. I still get abit of stiffness and aches if I do too much but like I said definitely noticed a difference recently. I find I improve one week then come to a standstill then all of a sudden another improvement, so hopefully you’ll notice big improvements over the next few weeks 🤞🏼Good luck with your recovery.

Rod I am 10weeks too. surgery Mar 15. I thought I was doing really well and started doing more and now very sore. I was happy at week 2 when I could walk without crutches but had to go back t. using them as I was limping. to much to soon.

I do find sitting or driving for any length of time is still very stiff and sore and sleeping is still very uncomfortable.

I am doing my exercised and exercising with walking my dog twice a day for a 30-60 min walk but it hurts. He is only a puppy of 6 months old and pulling and tripping etc so that doesn't help. I am hoping the next 2 weeks makes a big difference as Pamela said she found, as I am back to work Jun 6.

Still way better then before surgery and the pain in nothing compared to that.   Fingers crossed I can get back to hiking and biking soon. I am 53 and was in decent shape till accident 2 years ago.

Im 6 weeks and same as you. Doing more and sore because of it. I feel like I have growing pains in my leg. Probably bone knitting (Im assuming) I too went back to a crutch after using a cane too soon.

But yes, no where near the pain of before the op!

Patience is key for us I think.

You are not alone by any means and Yabut is correct that we all heal at different rates.

If everything looks okay on x rays, have patience, do your exercises, appreciate gradual improvements. I’ve had a very long drawn out and painful recovery. An older friend of mine at age 86 had no pain at all and recovered really fast even tho she is more than 20 Years older than me and I’m a lot healthier. Go figure.  And then there is Prince Philip!! Be kind to yourself . It will get better. This is a good forum if you need specific advice or support. Best wishes to you.

He was amazing! My 93 year old aunt has recovered quicker than me after a fall required a partial replacement!

Apparently less muscle and you recover quicker that's why older people recover quicker. 😝 That's what I'm going with anyway x

Yes. My surgeon told me "this recovery of yours is gonna hurt" because of all the weighted squats I did!!!!
