STILL HAVING PAIN AND STIFFNESS 10 WEEKS AFTER THR

I am a 60 year old in good shape that had right posterior THR 10 weeks ago.I have pretty good mobility but am still experiencing a lot of pain and stiffness.I cannot sit for long periods of time or walk for long distances without pain.In fact I have to stand for a moment after sitting a long time and then gingerly take a few painful steps before I can get going again.Went back to surgeon and he checked/xrayed hip and all looked fine.He said the pain is due to connective tissue and muscle he had to move and cut during surgery that has to heal.He gave me a cortisone shot in the pain area which only helped for a few days.I am tired of hearing so many success stories of people in their 80's that were pain free and walking around after only a few weeks. The worst part is the pain at night and havent had a full nights sleep in weeks.Has anyone else experienced a long drawn out recovery from THR that I am going through?

Hi Rod
Yes I'm 13 weeks post op and am the same as you, I also have to stand a few seconds after sitting for a while to get my hip going. I can't go far either. I still can't left my leg unaided as its so weak. I'm doing the exercises everyday but still stiff and exhausted in bed by 6pm. Can't go back to work yet either. Your not in your own. I have a lot of muscle pain and bruising too. I feel like my hip needs oiling lol. Don't be disheartened just take your time x

I would suggest that most of us experience a long drawn out recovery from THR, just as you are going through
I was off work for 5 months, mainly due to surgical errors, a lot of us do suffer problems and setbacks, This recovery is a real roller coaster, both physically and emotionally that I was ill equipped to deal with.
A lot of muscles get cut and moved around in this operation, the real amazing thing is that we can recover and walk again at all. Sure, some do get 'miracle' recoveries, the rest of us just soldier on. I am still doing just that some 2 years and 7 months after my THR.
Best wishes

I am almost 11 weeks and like others have two steps forward and one back. I suffered a virus at week four with high temperature, sore throat and coughing and sneezing pulling back muscles. The hip vein put right seems to has resurrected old back problems which cause me more pain than the hip.
I have noticed a sudden improvement the last week.
Be patient we all get there in the end x

Today it has been two months since my left THR. I am 58 years old, and significantly over weight. Previous to the surgery i had been on a 1-1/2 year journey of weight loss. It was slow going, but I had lost 35 lbs before the pain started and derailed my fitness program. I am avoiding the scale, but figure I have regained 20 lbs. So frustrating. I was so proud of what I had achieved. It took a few months to figure out what was wrong. One day in October 2017 I had a killer workout on my rower. the next day my left leg hurt. I had never had an exercise injury before so I did not know what was wrong. I though maybe I had pulled a muscle. Resting did not help. Ice did not help. the first trip to the doctor did not help. PT did not help. In fact, PT made me hurt more. Went back to the doctor, she sent me for x-rays and to an orthopedic surgeon. He tells me i have 2 very bad hips. The x-rays were incredible. the left Hip ball was completely covered in arthritic cysts. So, about 5 months after the start of the pain, i had a anterior left THR. I am doing pretty well. Went back to work after 2 weeks at home, however, the 2nd week I worked from home putting in 40 hours of computer commuting. This really did wear me out. In comparison to many I am doing really well. I have been walking unassisted since the 3rd week, I drive, and do stairs. I have been somewhat lax in doing the exercises. I do only the early recommended ones, and only when I remember to do them. The weather as some affect on my pain. Last week when storms were coming through our area, the pain was a strong as the week before the surgery. But now that I know what is going on, i think I can deal with it.
Pain comes and goes. Mornings are difficult. I am slower to get ready for work than I used to be. At this stage, should I still be doing exercises? if so, what do you all recommend?
I want to add that this is my first exposure to reading a forum. Certainly the first time participating. i will appreciate any feedback.
After reading this thread, i think i am experiencing some post-op depression. Not interested in getting on the treadmill and walking. Though I know that would be good for me. Before the pain, I loved working out on the rower. Knowing that I will wake up to some level of pain every day is draining and depressing. I also realize that I could be doing upper body workouts that don't affect my thigh/hip. But no motivation for that either. Wah, wah, wah.

Hi hun
Your not alone getting out of bed in general is an effort some days, I wonder when that level of energy will get better? The constant back ache doesn't help. My physio would say "the more active you are the better the pain will become" but he also says little and often. With the nice weather recently I've been going up and down the garden a few times in between TV programmes. Getting some fresh air and 5 mins of sun helps. I even caught the sun on my face this gave me some colour back lol. Don't feel down this is one of the most drawn out recovery processes to go through and its rubbish for us that haven't just bounced back in 4 weeks. Make sure you get enough sleep because your body heals better. I'm with you on the weight gain mines well over a stone last I looked and I won't be looking anytime soon. I'm going to try the healthy eating plan today lots of fruit and small snacks. I bought mini corn and mini cucumbers and baby peppers that's lunch. My sweet tooth came back whilst in hospital so need to calm it down. Good luck hun keep in touch x

i ll "wah"with you!bless you, youve had it tough!in a way im lucky as i was determined to get back to walking my dogs-its not their fault their mum had a dodgy hip(!)and that pushed me to go out when i would far rather not have-i had pain after walks, but a decent rest usually put it right-also-depression-its almost inevitable,i would think,i live on my own and my daughter was a little star-but you dont want to put on people, and i was very down for a while.as people on here say,you just have to be kind to yourself.as to the exercises-i forget them!i did them once dailyat first(they say twice daily, but i was too tired by evening to do them again!)and im afraid ive not done them at all this week,im not advocating it-its just me-theyre boring,i forget, and my thinking is,im walking 2hours daily,as well as housework, gardening, itll have to do!best of luck x
