Strange Cross-eyed Feeling causing Loss of Balance
Posted , 86 users are following.
For about the past 2 years I have suffered from a sudden feeling of visual imbalance or cross-eyed sensation (although not actually cross-eyed)! This in turn causes a type of vertigo involving loss of balance accompanied by nausea. This lasts for approx 10-15 minutes before my vision returns to normal. I have had 2 eye tests which confirm nothing untoward (I have replacement single vision lenses in both eyes following cataract surgery). My doctors have given up trying to diagnose this condition having carried out blood tests for Pituitry, thyroid, diabetes, anaemia and infection which are all perfectly OK. I would be interested to know if anybody has suffered similar or knows a possible cause. I have not been rfeferred to a neurologist or recommended for CT or MRI. I am female aged 65

BPPV IS A VERY COMMON FORM OF VERTIGO, EASILY DIAGNOSED BY A CIRCULAR MOTION OF EYEBALL!
OFTEN CAUSED BY SITTING IN A DENTISTS CHAIR, SHAMPOO BOWL.. MOVEMENTS OF THE HEAD BACWARDS..
MY NEUROTOLOGIST INSTANTLY DIAGNOSED ME.

Hi Kate. That’s interesting.. many years ago I suffered from acute anxiety & depression which affected my balance, I felt as if I was on a boat, also very jittery & weepy.Eventually, having had everything checked I was prescribed an antidepressant which helped enormously, we’re not machines, & the mind can react very acutely to things we experience, not always immediately. In my case I do have times when I can have 3 episodes in a week and other times it could be once a month. After much research and help from someone on this group, it was determined that I have Menieres Disease. When I am at the peck of a possible episode if I turn my head, move quickly, or bend down and rise quickly, an episode will happen causing crossed eyes like feelings, dizzy and being unbalanced. Other times it may be a stress induced episode but always at the peak risk period. I usually get a warning when I start hearing a noise in my left ear sounding like a rushing of water days before the episodes happen. However there have been a couple of occasions lately when I haven't had that warning and the episode just happens.

I to have had these symptoms.went to a specialist and had test ran and everything came back good..Dr believes I'm suffering from ocular migraines and has put me on medication for them and with these migraines you do not have pain you really don't even know you are having them unless you have symptoms as we all have had.I have been taking medication for a couple of months now and I havent had an episode..hopefully this helps you or someone else out...ocular migraines..

Yeah that's what I was initially diagnosed to have. They put me on medication and it took a couple months to notice that the medication gave me short term and some long term memory loss and then made a my symptoms worse. Haven't been on the medication in several months but still dealing with memory loss side effects. It was later determined that I have Menieres Disease and not migraines.

Well i went to see my local doctor about it and he sent me for tests, i had a CT brain scan and a angiogram and echo on my heart and a 24 hour heart monitor, after all this my doctor said that it looks like ''i've had a mild stroke'' and my heart is a bit slow so i have to travel to see a cardiologist. So looks like a small stroke, so far...

Oh my, I am so sorry. I know it doesn't feel like it now but you are so lucky the doctor knew what to look for and sent you for the right tests. Keep us posted and I will be praying. Take care..

My first episode of this occurred about a year ago. During the first couple of weeks I had more, several a day at first then less frequently until after a month or so only occasionally. Also they were not as strong as time went on. They gradually dissipated and now I have not had any in four or five months. I researched a lot and found so many different "causes" and was never really able to figure out what mine were caused by. What I did learn from the variety of stories is that most doctors don't have a clue and that many people's "cure" were totally different. I never went to the doctor because I did not want to go through batteries of tests and misdiagnosis. If it recurs, I may then go to the doc. For now, I am fine.

I have had the same problem going on for about 3 years now. No explanation. I am a 53 year old female. The only connection I have made is this has been going on since I had heart valve surgery followed by a ruptured colon and sepsis. But, it did not begin until about a year later. No medication changes. Just really strange. I have corrective transition lenses with glasses, but had those before this all began. Ophthalmologist had nothing as everything with my eyes has checked out. I cannot figure out any triggers. It has happened while driving, outdoors, eating, working on the computer, teaching in a classroom. There is no common thread in the activities leading up to an episode.
