Strange sensation / tightness in chest and upper throat

I'm hoping for some help please..I have been feeling this strange sensation in the chest and lower throat. It's a sensation which I can only describe as a heavy feeling (no pain) and a tickling cough sensation in the chest. This then moves upwards to the lower throat area and makes it as though it is becoming tight. It makes me clear the throat and try to get the mucus out. I can feel a bit coming out but not much. The sensation makes me want to cough.I have been to doctor many times and he has listened to my chest and back. He's said that it's all clear. In the end he gave me antibiotics which I took for 7 days but it made no difference. He's also given me ventolin but it made no difference. I had chest x-ray and that showed clear. He referred me to ENT specialist who did a nasal endoscopy and that was clear. I have also done a barium swallow and that was also clear. However, I am still having this problem. I have also noticed that when I cough, I hear a grinding noise in my chest which sounds like friction. I've now been referred to a respiratory specialist and my appointment is next Friday. I'm really worried as I don't know what it can be. Has anyone else has this strange feeling? Can it be infection of the lower airway which has not cleared up? All this has been going on for 3 months now and I'm really worried and not sure what to do...Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you..

    Hi Rai,

I have been experiencing the same or very similar symptoms as you and many individuals here. I am very concerned mainly because I know something doesn't feel right but no one can pin point it.

3 months ago my husband and had been working on a property we had recently purchased inhaling dust and all kinds of chemicals. For about a week or so I had been feeling chest pressure and finally decided to go to the ER. At the time they found my chest was swollen from the dust.. I eventually went back 5 more times with the chest pressure. I had gotten sinusitis from it and then they said I was asmático from the mold and dust which was normal as many ppl are... my chest was no longer swollen and Ct scan and X-rays were showing normal at this point. I went to my PCP, saw as pnemologist and am now going on Friday to complete a pulmonoary fitness test to rule anything out.

I am feeling chest pressure (no to be confused with pain) it's a heavy feeling. I have also started to feel my throat hurt a bit. I feel full and bloated when this happens. At times I get flutters on the left side of my chest and on the left side under my breast. I've been told it could be anxiety... or too much stress... I've relaxed and it's eases the pressure but then comes back. At time when I'm walking in my lunch break I begin to feel light headed or find it hard to breathe. I don't know if it's related but my stomach has been bonkers lately. Sounds are crazy yet bowel movements are regular. Just very very gassy. I have been told I have constrochonditis. I can feel the pain if I stretch my Left arm out but it's not pain that I regularly feel... it's heaviness.

Has anyone experienced the same? If so, could you please direct me to what type of doctor I should be seeing?

Hi rai i know this is a old post but i have been suffering from a simliar condition for past few days now and the last time i had same symptons were a year and half ago, tight chest cough, shortness of breath and strange feeling of pressure in my neck and throat like someones hands around my neck and windpipe, slight temperature and rapid heart beat, i have seen doctor today who has checked everything out . Nose throat heart lungs, clear chest but as said it looks like i have a virus which had infected my trachea (windpipe) which gives shortness of breath, i have been prescribed steriod tablets and ventolin inhaler, no antibiotics at this stage as temperature not high enough. This maybe some help or not.

So I have had the same thing for a little over 5 years now. My doctor says it's anxiety and I usually feel this way when extremely stressed or during the holidays when I'm crazy busy.

Try not to over think it, focus on other stuff.

Stay hydrated and do relax breathing exercises.

    Hope this is helpful.

I've had the same thing on and off for 8 years.  The past 3 months it's been every day.  I just had my gallbladder out and thought it might go away when the gallbladder was removed but no such luck.  I'm giving it to the end of the month and then going to an ENT to try and figure this out.  It first reared it's head 8 years ago when I tore a ligament in my chest  by my clavicle.  Just figured it was stuff shifting around from that injury.  This is the most constant I've had it so time to check it out and make sure it's nothing serious.

    Hi everyone,

I found this discussion after doing a search for these symptoms because I've been suffering from them for about 4 months now.  Back in April, I had a bathroom remodel done and over the course of the 3 weeks it took to complete it, there was a TON of dust and debris floating around in the air.  The contractor didn't hang up any sheeting and didn't clean up each day before he left, leaving me to do it.

About three days before he was finishing up, I started to get this scratchy and burning feeling in my chest and a burning/irritated feeling in my nose.  For two weeks after that, I was severly congested and ended up going to the clinic to see if I had a sinus infection.  I was told I didn't and should keep taking Mucinex and rinsing my sinuses.

It got better but then I developed this weird tightness in my upper chest along with the feeling of being short of breath.  I could breathe, but because it felt like congestion, it made me feel like I couldn't.  It wasn't constant, though.  It would come about and then go away after 15 min. or so - maybe once or twice a day or every other day.  Then I began to worry that it was something serious.  I went to the ER to make sure I wasn't having a heart attack.  After tests, x-rays, etc., it wasn't a heart attack and was told it was probably allergy related.  They gave me a Pecid (20mg) and told me to take it twice a day for a week to see if it would go away.  His reasoning was that the allergy was setting off the acid in my stomach and perhaps causing heartburn.  With Pepcid being a histamine blocker, I was also told to take Claritin every day with it to really knock it out.  I felt better and went off the Pepcid and Claritin.

After a good 2-3 weeks with no symptoms, it came back.  When it would happen, I now felt like my back needed to be stretched out.  I have a dense foam roller and rolled my back out, heard a bunch of pops and instantly felt better.  My posture is horrible.  I work at a computer all day so I'm hunched over and have been for many years so my thought was that it's now effected my breathing because everything's sqrunched together.

I went to an allergist to get tested and the only thing I'm allergic to is dust.  Given the remodel, I had PLENTY of that.  It's too coicidental to me that this all started to happen after that because I was so sick afterwards.  The allergist recommended I take Nasalcrom so I took it for two days and felt horrible so I stopped taking it.  I called him to tell him and he told me to just do a daily sinus rinse and pretty much didn't want to have anything to do with me.

I still have the congested feeling in my upper chest, though not as bad as it was by any means, but it's still happening.  The more I worry about it the worse it feels so some of it could be anxiety.  It feels better when I stretch out, get up and walk around or lie down.  It doesn't happen during the night, just after I've been sitting for a while, so I try to get up frequently and pay attention to my posture.  It's also relieved when I take Mucinex.

I'm going to see a Chiropractor in the next week or so because it's been about 5 years since I've been and my body feels like it's out of alignment.  I do a lot of home projects where I'm lifting, bending, etc. so my body needs a tune up.  I'm seeing a Gastro guy in two weeks to rule out acid and then I'm going to find an ENT to see what he might suggest this is.  I also want to get back to doing yoga and try meditation because I do think a lot of it is anxiety driven due to worrying about it.

    Hello,

I just noticed what you've written. Were you ever able to get any information as to what it might be and what's causing it? I'm going through the same identical thing, same symptoms, I've seen numerous doctors and they can't seem to find anything. It's been going on quite a while and the area between my throat and upper middle chest just seems to be getting tighter as time passes
