Strange sensation / tightness in chest and upper throat

I'm hoping for some help please..I have been feeling this strange sensation in the chest and lower throat. It's a sensation which I can only describe as a heavy feeling (no pain) and a tickling cough sensation in the chest. This then moves upwards to the lower throat area and makes it as though it is becoming tight. It makes me clear the throat and try to get the mucus out. I can feel a bit coming out but not much. The sensation makes me want to cough.I have been to doctor many times and he has listened to my chest and back. He's said that it's all clear. In the end he gave me antibiotics which I took for 7 days but it made no difference. He's also given me ventolin but it made no difference. I had chest x-ray and that showed clear. He referred me to ENT specialist who did a nasal endoscopy and that was clear. I have also done a barium swallow and that was also clear. However, I am still having this problem. I have also noticed that when I cough, I hear a grinding noise in my chest which sounds like friction. I've now been referred to a respiratory specialist and my appointment is next Friday. I'm really worried as I don't know what it can be. Has anyone else has this strange feeling? Can it be infection of the lower airway which has not cleared up? All this has been going on for 3 months now and I'm really worried and not sure what to do...Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you..

Im having that kind of problem now with a slight difference. Mine is Im having dryness on my throat at night so i have to get up and drink water. The heaviness tgat im feeling on my chest became a slightly burning sensation also during the night. I dont feel them during the day or at least maybe not that bothering during the day so i dont notice them. Im kinda worried to go to the doctor because of my financial situation and i dont have any insurance. I hope somebody might shed a light into this so just in case i know which doctor to go.

Sounds like a classic case of acid reflux (AR). Try taking gaviscon and see if it relieves the symptoms. If it does, then it is AR, from here, avoid spicy and acidic foods an drinks. And get those alkaline tablets to make your water less acidic. Good luck

Hi. I just started experiencing these same sensations about 1 month ago. I have had testing done (EKG, chest xray, bloodwork, respitory rate, etc) everything came back normal, just as I heard from many of you. My symptoms went away after 3 days, but then returned 1 week later. I get so fatigued during these episodes. I am currently feeling this way again - chest tightness, lump in throat, sometimes shortness of breath when doing simple tasks, and a headache. I was diagnosed with anyklosing spondylitis in 2010 - which causes me chronic pain and inflammation. My flare ups come on with no warning and sometimes go away as quickly as they came on. Other times, the pain continues to increase and can last for extended time periods. So yesterday, I decided to do some research on symptoms and complications from anyklosing spondylitis. Low and behold, these symptoms are complications of AS! I encourage you all that are still searching for your answers to do some research on AS to determine if this could also be your situation. If so, contact a rheumatologist to be tested. There is no cute currently, and it is a degenerative disease. But there is medication and other things you can do to reduce symptoms and manage pain. It is relieving to know what is causing me to feel this way, even though there isn't much I can do about it. I now know that I am not "crazy" and these sensations are real and I know for myself (because of my AS) things I should not do to try to eliminate these sensations. I wish you all the best in discovering your answers! Please let me know if you also have been diagnosed with AS.

Ive been having stomach issues since last april and have recently begun the round of testings that everyone else here has gone through. Like most people these tests so far have all come back negative. I very recently started having the weird coughing problem exactly as the original post describes so i decided to look into it. After seeing your post I think you saved my life. I'm going to contact my dr tomorrow and ask him, but Im almost certain I have AS. Im only 21 and have been having all the lower and upper back symptoms common with AS for over 10 years. I've always assumed this was due to my early growth spurts and my height (im 6'6.) I will definitely report back if i find anything out. If anyone sees this and has questions about my specific symptoms id be glad to elaborate.

It sounds like it is cricopharyngeal spasms. It is a problem with the sphincter in the esophagus.

Hi all. I don't know if this will help.  I haven't been mountain biking due to tidying laundry up and have noticed since i have stopped eating so much fruit, the symptons have eased off. Only the throat seems tyo bee there at times. I'm not saying this is the cure but it might help to lead people ion the right path. now all i have to do is  get back into mountain biking with  some swimming. All the best everyone

So happy to hear that Martin. I just signed on here for the first time in a while. I was put on Protonix for about 6 months with no relief. I have been drinking a pro biotic tea with ginger and lemon every night instead and my symptoms have subsided for the most part as well. I do believe it has a lot to do with our diets, weight, and activity.

Hi Melissa its good to hear from you and see thinngs are getting better. It seems to be a bit of a long road. we just keep walking and we will get there. I have just started drinking green tea myself. It has a nice taste. I'm also looking at starting a rainbow diet. Which will give me all the stuff i have been missing. We will see what this does. It can only help. Take care
