Strange sensation / tightness in chest and upper throat

I'm hoping for some help please..I have been feeling this strange sensation in the chest and lower throat. It's a sensation which I can only describe as a heavy feeling (no pain) and a tickling cough sensation in the chest. This then moves upwards to the lower throat area and makes it as though it is becoming tight. It makes me clear the throat and try to get the mucus out. I can feel a bit coming out but not much. The sensation makes me want to cough.I have been to doctor many times and he has listened to my chest and back. He's said that it's all clear. In the end he gave me antibiotics which I took for 7 days but it made no difference. He's also given me ventolin but it made no difference. I had chest x-ray and that showed clear. He referred me to ENT specialist who did a nasal endoscopy and that was clear. I have also done a barium swallow and that was also clear. However, I am still having this problem. I have also noticed that when I cough, I hear a grinding noise in my chest which sounds like friction. I've now been referred to a respiratory specialist and my appointment is next Friday. I'm really worried as I don't know what it can be. Has anyone else has this strange feeling? Can it be infection of the lower airway which has not cleared up? All this has been going on for 3 months now and I'm really worried and not sure what to do...Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you..

I have been to doctor after doctor, includin, pulmonary, ENT, Endocrinologist, sleep study doctors and all tests were negative and now I recently got referred to the u of mn, I need help. A lot of weight gain too but no weight loss

I am going through exactly this, I am wondering if anyone has found any answers? After 2 weeks I found out I had strep with not symptoms but even after a course of antibiotics this feeling persists.

Get tested for celiac disease. I had same issues and this is oddly what it ended up being.

I have had the same symptoms for many years. I just finished tax time and have been VERY stressed. I believe you have Gurd/reflux. I am allergic to EVERYTHING. Prilosec, Nexium, etc. It gives me headaches and every muscle and bone in my body aches.

So, I lost 15 lbs, cut out all meat, gluten, dairy, potatoes, fat, onions, garlic, salads, dressings. I agree with the plant-based diet. I eat frequently and have small portions. I eat nuts and beans, hard cheese. I take the Gaviscon, Pepto Bismal but the best thing is probiotics. I use the gummy version and it really helps.

Our bodies cannot digest certain foods and our bodies produce extra acid in an attempt to digest the food we eat.

Hope this helps. All of those medical tests are a pain. All they do is prescribe more medicine which causes more side effects.

For me I don't think it's reflux/gerd at all.  It's only on one side and only by my clavicle which is a point of injury (torn ligament in my chest) that occurred 9 years ago.  I notice it if I need a chiropractic adjustment or when I workout with weights the most.

I also have been suffering with the tightness of the throat for almost 4 years. Been to my GP and then to an Ear, Throat and neck specialist without relief. I've been taking Xanax for number of years due to my anxiety attacks. My tightness is a constant pressure that never goes away. The Specialist told me two weeks ago it's because I'm all tense so he is sending me for some physical therapist. He said he found my shoulders too tense and it could be causing the tightness ( I doubt it) I've gone and had massages and still the tightness is still there. I just want some relief..!!! Thanks for reading this.

I feel your pain and frustration, literally!! I really suggest you take a look at your diet. I can handle oat meal, nuts, beans. I cannot handle meat, chicken, fish (tuna gives me heartburn!), dairy, fried foods, fast foods, bread. The Zantac, Prilosec, etc made my heartburn worse. The idea is that the flap that keeps the stomach acid from going back up the esophagus is not closing properly. There is a surgical procedure that will tighten it up but I don't want surgery.

So, go back to plain food and eat every couple of hours. Add probiotics and plain Pepto Bismal and drink water. The idea is to wash the acid from the esophagus with water and coat it with the Pepto.

I'm not a doctor but the Zantac is to stop your body from producing so much acid however, it does not prevent the acid from going back up the esophagus which is what causes the tightness and pressure.

I truly feel your pain. I had an anxiety attack the other day because of stress. Pepto did the trick!

Hi everyone, I just found this forum and I'm having some same problems and I am far from fining out what's wrong with me. This last week I had a cat scan of my neck for something maybe unrelated and they didn't find any other problem but the normal 3 herniated discs in my neck and spondylitis arthritis , nerve damage among other stuff that I'd say that us the norm. I don't sleep well at all, I get up every 1 to 2 hours which the lung dr may think is sleep apnea, happening for 5 years. But the cat scan I had.... aparently showed a nodule in my upper right lung. The radiologistcame to speak with me saying I need another scan in 3 months....like wtf? The moment they told me this I made an appt with a pulmonlogist because this is the first time someone found something else other than my neck.....that can be related to how I feel, day in and out. I'm never NOT in pain when it comes to my neck and head along with migraines. I've been trying to figure out what really is going on because.....really....I can't be in so much pain based on the herinated discs etc. I get sick worse than my family, always! if I hurt myself in some way my neck swells up and I will actually get sick, tiny things put me in bed for days. I worry and try to find some reason almost everyday to why I feel like I do. Always tired and fatigued along with pain from my chest up to my top of my head. I started losing hair way more than every before, my teeth are literally falling apart day by day. Personally every doctor I've ever tried to talk to pegs me as a pill popper just because I'm so young in so much pain. No one thinks anything could be wrong bc of my age. I'm just hoping this pulmonlogist cares enough to look in more. He gave me symbacort because the ventolin the pcp after my bronchitis gave me did not work. I still cough all the time and i feel like something is sitting in my chest brlow my throat, slmost like something is stuck in there.I cough huge checks of crap and still have the feeling in my chest. For some reason.....I hold my breathe all the time almost every time I try to breathe. I've always thought it was anxiety or because I always hurt. But now he gave me the inhaler I feel as though my lungs chill out and I don't hold my breathe it like I've always done. So maybe it's not just aniexty, could be something with my lungs. I've also heard that people can get pains in the neck and shoulders due to your lungs. There's some inflammatory thing going on. I just don't know exactly what. I beg god every night to sleep and I'm so pain day by day that i wish I'd just die. Im tired of not feeling good and hurting that it's depressing me to the core. No one understands or cares. The funny things is..i've had the same symptoms for at least over 3 years now recorded in my book. I won't even realize it until I look back. I've had this terrible cough for years along with hacking up dark thick mucus probably because i smoke but who knows now that I saw the pulmonlogist I realized my chest has been hurting off and on daily I just never noticed or thought it'd be the reason. Sorry this is so long!!

I've found the solution (So far) to this problem. I have had the exact same symptoms as most everyone else here. Tightness in lower throat/upper chest. Hard to breath. Felt like I couldn't breath into my upper lungs. Then my atomach started hurting about 30 minutes after every meal for 2-3 hours.

Had all sorts of blood tests done. All came back normal. ENT scoped my vocal cords - normal. Chest X-ray - normal. EKG, ecg, and stress test for my heart - normal. Barium swallow test - normal, no signs of GERD. Upper endoscopy - normal with no signs of GERD. Thyroid tests and ultrasound - normal. I took omeprezole for 2 months with not much difference after the first week.

I believe my problem starts from silent acid reflux/GERD and is made worse by anxiety related to the pressure in my throat. I was sick of burping up food that I had eaten 6 hours ago then I had an epiphany. If im burping up food, it's probably not digesting. I started researching GERD and it appears it can be caused by low stomach acid. The PPI's and antacid are meant to lower stomach acid, many times to neutral ph. This is the exact opposite of what you want to happen. You need to raise your stomach acidity not lower it. There is a cheap test you can do at home to determine if you're low on acid. First thing in the morning mix 1/4 tsp of baking soda in 4-6 is of water. The chemical reaction of baking soda (A base) and your stomach acid should create gas thru a chemical reaction. It should make you burp within 2 minutes. If you take longer than this to burp, you probably have to stomach acid. This test isn't super accurate, so do it for a week straight and average the results. I was around 7-1/2 minutes. I started taking raw organic apple cider vinegar at the start of each meal and the stomach pain disappeared the first day. You can also take HCL with pepsin, but the apple cider vinegar seems more natural to me. The throat pressure is getting better every day and stomach issues are gone. Here's a couple of videos.
