Strange sensation / tightness in chest and upper throat

I'm hoping for some help please..I have been feeling this strange sensation in the chest and lower throat. It's a sensation which I can only describe as a heavy feeling (no pain) and a tickling cough sensation in the chest. This then moves upwards to the lower throat area and makes it as though it is becoming tight. It makes me clear the throat and try to get the mucus out. I can feel a bit coming out but not much. The sensation makes me want to cough.I have been to doctor many times and he has listened to my chest and back. He's said that it's all clear. In the end he gave me antibiotics which I took for 7 days but it made no difference. He's also given me ventolin but it made no difference. I had chest x-ray and that showed clear. He referred me to ENT specialist who did a nasal endoscopy and that was clear. I have also done a barium swallow and that was also clear. However, I am still having this problem. I have also noticed that when I cough, I hear a grinding noise in my chest which sounds like friction. I've now been referred to a respiratory specialist and my appointment is next Friday. I'm really worried as I don't know what it can be. Has anyone else has this strange feeling? Can it be infection of the lower airway which has not cleared up? All this has been going on for 3 months now and I'm really worried and not sure what to do...Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you..

Hi everyone, I've been having pretty similar symptoms to the ones you all are describing. I'd originally gone to a pulmonologist who diagnosed me with asthma which didnt seem right because I was doing 6-7 mile runs without problems and his medications didnt seem to be working.

I've had 2 X-Rays, 4 bloodworks, 1 CT Scan, 1 pulmonary function test, echocardiogram, stress test. I am all clear except for low vitamin D and normal but on the low range vitamin B12. This could be due to the prednisone my doc put me on which I am now off.

Anyways, I will see a GI specialist tomorrow even though I have been on PPI for 2 weeks without any real improvement. I did, however, take H2 blockers with this medication which I've heard makes it innefective.

My question for everyone here is, does your pain improve if you position yourself a certain way when lying down? Mine gets better if in certain positions and I'm wondering if maybe its just costochondritis, made worse by my vitamin D defficiency.

    Thanks for all you replies!

    Hi, rai27,

I hope you are feeling better!  I have been having your symptons for the last few days after taking Miralax for several months to treat constipation.  I also suffer from a hiatal hernia and eat raw fruit in excess.  I had had many of your tests done before and what I wanted to ask you is to check the food that you eat.  In my case, I have to stop the Miralax, because it does not mix well with the excessive pineapple and blueberries I consume!  Also, try using a pillow a bit higher than the space between your shoulder space and head when you go to bed.  And do not forget to stop coffee, colas, and alcoholic beverages.  Now I am going to take vitamin E natural..tocopherol and eat mild foods...no medication for the time being!

This is likely to be GERD but is also associated with anxiety depression, responding to anti depressants. Throat symptoms are closely associted with mood,  hence the historical "lump in the throat" or the condition known as globus.

I'm a 48ol female with same long term symptoms. I also have had tons of texts, X-rays, scopes to no avail. About 3 months ago I found out I am B12 and D deficient. Been staking supplements for 3 months but doesn't change my chest/throat issues. Wish someone could figure this out. Taking decongestant, and allergy meds and medium daily too but nothing helps. Tired.

hey.. basically it seems like 3 things to me

anxiety or panic episode can cause a little heavyness in throat so 1st thing keep it calm .. ignore it if u can

2nd check your thyroid to a doctor cause if its not an internal.issue it must be an external issue inside your neck

3rd try a muscle relaxant twice a day for a day ... there is muscle SCM which when gets hypertrophied can cause a little heaviness msg me on istagram iamnishant_14 if u feel that is helpful

    Rai,

I think you and I have the same thing – I've experienced the same symptoms and had about the same tests with no insightful findings. Did you see the gastroenterologist? If it was reflux, I think the medication you were on should have helped. Mine hasn't either. Please update me...

    Thank you...

Hello, I hope you have figured this out or it has stopped happening? This is the closest post I can find to what I've been experiencing the past week. I've had IBS for over 20 years, so plenty of stomach issues, however this is a feeling I've never once had until now. It started a week ago with having a lump sensation in my throat coming and going for 4 days. I had this a long time ago so figured it was related to esophagus. As soon as that stopped happening, I developed the weird feeling in my lower throat / upper chest, just in the center and I do not even know how to describe it. Weird, slight pressure but can't tell if it's a spasm (doesn't feel like previous esophagus spasms), lasts for a few seconds then lets up, but happens all day long off an on, kind of feel like coughing every time it happens but not sure that helps really, it's the strangest thing ever and I sure hope it just goes away soon! Been trying antacids and various other things more to see if it will subside but nothing seems to be helping... I otherwise feel fine, can breathe fine, can swallow fine, it's just very annoying and driving me crazy. rolleyes

Not to mention worrying me because it won't stop... (anxiety like crazy)
