Strange sensation / tightness in chest and upper throat

I'm hoping for some help please..I have been feeling this strange sensation in the chest and lower throat. It's a sensation which I can only describe as a heavy feeling (no pain) and a tickling cough sensation in the chest. This then moves upwards to the lower throat area and makes it as though it is becoming tight. It makes me clear the throat and try to get the mucus out. I can feel a bit coming out but not much. The sensation makes me want to cough.I have been to doctor many times and he has listened to my chest and back. He's said that it's all clear. In the end he gave me antibiotics which I took for 7 days but it made no difference. He's also given me ventolin but it made no difference. I had chest x-ray and that showed clear. He referred me to ENT specialist who did a nasal endoscopy and that was clear. I have also done a barium swallow and that was also clear. However, I am still having this problem. I have also noticed that when I cough, I hear a grinding noise in my chest which sounds like friction. I've now been referred to a respiratory specialist and my appointment is next Friday. I'm really worried as I don't know what it can be. Has anyone else has this strange feeling? Can it be infection of the lower airway which has not cleared up? All this has been going on for 3 months now and I'm really worried and not sure what to do...Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you..

Hey, 43yo male suffering from the same symptoms.

I have read all of the comments on this post and there have been a couple of things that have caught my attention.

    - anxiety plays a major part. After learning that I wasn't crazy and others are going through the same, my anxiety eased a little.

    - more importantly a few people have mentioned changes to their diet. The thing that struck a chord with me was sugar. I drink red bull, fizzy drinks and grab sweet before healthy.

After a bit of research I found that a sugar sensitivity or allergy can cause sinus and throat inflammation and a multitude of gastro problems.

Apparently we consume up to 160 pounds of sugar per year compared to 9 pounds per year in caveman times.

Going to cut back for a few weeks and see how I go...

Have you committed to cutting back? If so, were there noticeable changes? Or was it the same?

HI libleon I just read your blog and I think your on  the right track with the diet. I have cut back on sugar and have been eating alot of bread for some time. I think that is contributing to the problem.I'm trying to think when it started and it seems to have started after I had the flew last year and has gotten slowly worse. Before the flew I had a runny nose in the morning. When i go for a fast bike ride and up a small hill my chest hurts breathing is a bit hard but after that it comes right with a bit of plygm coming up. I know i'm on the right track with the exercise. Just  have sort the diet out

    hello guys,

I have this symptom from past 3 years.

i always get this attack once a week or twice and in the night, so I simply take a citrazine to control it and sleep. There is nothing much i can do to cure it. Me too have consulted many doctors regarding it.

Could we have another update please? I've had a lot of the same symptoms for the last 18 months and I'm still suffering. I have had every test you have including a heart cath and they are finding absolutely nothing. I have had atelectasis in my left lower lobe of my lung and a little bit of scar tissue but it has shown improvement over the last 18 months. I am suffering and need help.

I have had the same breathing problems for the last 2 weeks.  I was very worried as I had to have my upper lobe of my right lung removed due to cancer 3 years ago.  It seems to have almost disapeared by taking Ranitidine in the morning and evening to keep the acid indigestion at bay, as well as a couple puffs of Ventolin a day.  Best wishes.

How long did you have symptoms before you were diagnosed with lung cancer? And what test Did they perform to come to that conclusion?

Hi there, can you tell us what homeopathic medicines you used? My boyfriend has been sick with the same thing for 6 months and I would love to know what helped you.

Hello Natasha,  I was at no time sick during these breathing episodes. When I breathed in heavy I could feel my chest tighten and throat tighten.  I am happy to let you know after taking the Ranitidine once in the morning and once before bed I do not have any morebreathing issues.  My Doctor has advised to continue the Ranitidine to keep my indigestion at bay and breathing clear.

How are you doing Jenny? I am suffering with similar symptoms since June (its September now). I am headed to the gastro doctor tomorrow, ENT next week, and pulmonologist the following week. My primary care doctor has about had it with me and is totally clueless as to what it could be. I have had a chest xray, a CT scan, blood work, and gallbladder ultrasound and they were all clear. I was given 40mg of Prilosec for a month and it made my mouth so dry everyday... after 4 weeks on it it made my chest heavier and ITCHY! I ended up in the ER with my throat and chest itching every time I took a breath- probably because it was dry as a bone. It was horrible. Please keep me posted on your progress since we seem to be going through this at the same time!

We have had the same test and have very similar symptoms. I've been diagnosed with mild asthma and I have some atelectasis in my left lower lobe of my long. How are you doing and have you had any results our findings thus far?

I have the same feeling. I truly felt alone. I was just describing it to a friend. I have always I this feeling, it's been forever. And I am suppose to go to gasto. But my doctor hasn't done it yet.

I am so frustrated, I literally cry over it. It is like it controls my life. It makes it so hard to do normal activities. Why, I just want to know why. I really feel all alone in this. I just want to shed some light on it and make it disappear. Thanks for listening to me venting.

I know what you mean. What is your next move with your doctor? My pulmonologist was very confident I would be healed with a nebulizer. Nope... Coughing up more junk... Feel like there is something going on in my throat area that is causing me not to breathe good. Makes my anxiety go nuts.
