Struggling to sit comfortably

Posted , 12 users are following.

Since discharge home on april 17th i have been unable to tolerate sitting in the armchair.

Its been measured OT suggested various pillows.

I have tried this and tried computer chair with pillows or not.

Tried dining chair etc etc....but i just cant sit.

I then start with pain in buttock groin thigh knee and ankle.

Ice and pain killers then for several hours to get on top of it.

The only comfy place is bed and i am feeling cut off in bedroom 😕

Hi Angela - i was a bit like that for a week or so - depends a bit on your weight - i think skinny people can suffer more as no fat to cushion things , but can just be very uncomfortable for a while . I borrowed an armchair from the nursing home I work at and that has been the onlt thing Ive sat in fir the last 6 weeks - not suggesting you raid your local home but might find something 2nd hand ?? I also bought a memory foam seat cushion from amazon which made things bearable - even took it to the local pub later on . Only a Couple of suggestions - dont know if theyll help you but all I can say is it will get better xxx

Def not cos im too thin lol.

I think its the pressure points and it sets the nerves alight.

I have used ice, paracetsmol and oxynorm.

Gp prescribed 100mg gabapentin three times daily but still hsppens when in chair 😞

Trying to think it will get better in time but feel isolated upstairs 😕

Me, too! Love my 4" memory foam mattress topper and how it cushions my poor, aching body.

One of the biggest surprises I had after THR was the fact that for the first several weeks I just couldn't ever get comfortable, anywhere. I had to constantly change my positions and move my legs in a futile attempt at comfort. I think I needed more pain meds! 😏

Can you lie on the sofa Angela with your feet up, taking the weight off your bum?  It may be a bit low, if so you'll have to get on and off with great care or get some raisers.  At least you wouldn't feel cut off.  Something else I've seen mentioned on here is a sun lounger.  I don't quite know how that would work, being even lower than a sofa but maybe you could shop around and get a higher one.  When you're better you could use it in the garden.  The only other thing I can suggest is a pressure cushion.

The first couple of weeks are not good but it does get better after that.

    Cels Xx

Be careful Angela.  Don't forget to slide your operated leg out in front and remember that 90 degree rule smile

    Angela,

My favourite daytime chair was this cane chair which has a very soft cushion.

For the evenings, I found the recliner (with a 6 inch base raiser made by me) was the best.

I think it was the softness of the cushion that did it, plus it is very wide, so plenty of room around the scar, nothing to press on it at all.

Hi Angela I was the same for the 1st week pre op. My legs used to hurt in the chair. My physio suggested putting my feet on a foot stool and I found this helped.

On a positive note it does get better. Keep giving it a go as every day you will see an improvement.

    Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Hi Angela, I am 7 weeks post op and still only tolerate sitting for up to an hour. I can walk for ages but sitting is really uncomfortable. My solution was to put a pop up camp bed which I borrowed from a neighbour, in our lounge, where I can put my leg up when things get too uncomfortable with a bean bag on it do I can raise my leg up and still be near the kids so I can help with homework, play with them etc. It's a bit cluttered as a result but at least I am close to the action in the house and, Hopefully by the time I get to 3 months, I won't need it any longer...
