Sudden gall bladder pain

Hi everyone,

I have been controlling my gall bladder pain by moderating my food intake. No fatty foods, food not highly spiced. Eating more green vegetables and drinking more water.

But today for some unknown reason out of the blue after my lunch 2 small plain rolls with ham I started to get that searing pain in my upper stomach which makes me want to lie down and makes focusing on my work impossible. I instantly took a lanzaprazole and put a hot water bottle on my stomach which is helping.

What do you do when you get an attack like this.

Thanks

Kazzbow

    Hi Kazzbow

When I get an attack like that all I can do is take painkillers and lie down with a hot water bottle until the pain eases, or having a warm bath can help.

Unfortunately I'm finding as time goes by more and more of my safe foods are triggering attacks, sorry I can't be more helpful, and fingers crossed for you that this is a one off x

      HI placid

I'm on the list for removal, was advised on 18th January that it would be a 4 to 5 month wait, so I'm hoping by the end of May beginning of June the removal will be done, just trying to cope as best I can while waiting x

Hi I have considered it but after speaking to the consultant who advised that it's not always problem solved by complete removal, still have to watch diet, difficult to digest fatty foods. I decide against  surgery for the time being. Of course if the pain becomes a regular part of my life then I will obviously reconsider.

All I can add to the other post is buscopan medicine may help and some ppl swear by drinking apple cider vinegar and apple juice although I don't think the latter is scientifically validated as such. I'm also at the stage when few foods agree anymore and reluctantly having my Gb removed soon as it is disrupting my life so much. Hope u are soon much better x

I've actually tried Apple Cider Vinegar, and it works as of right now. Similar to you, I'm afraid eventually it will stop working. Works right now, so that's great. Give it a try. One tablespoon of it, which I add in some gatorade because I'm not crazy about apple juice.

I would like to try it but fearful it won't work for me. I also have to be careful I don't eat too many acidic fruits. Thank you for your reply it's interesting seeing how other people handle it.

It was the only thing that actually got rid of what I know as a gallstone attack. I've had my gallstones for almost 2 years, first year and a half was just upper stomach pain after a heavy meal that would go away after I sat down, a few weeks ago I started getting up at 5am with severe upper stomach back pain, and was sweating and pale looking! But the attacks lasted for about 30 minutes, and would go away until the next morning or evening. I take one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar and have yet to wake up with any similar attack! I really hope it continues to work! Just trying to see if it would work for others! Hope you feel better!! Gallstones suck!

    Hi, Kazzbow,

You are doing everything correctly, I think.  However, ham has a lot of preservatives in it, so ham can also trigger an attack.  I stuck to grilled chicken, no skin and very lean cuts of beef and pork.  Foods that have lots of preservative chemicals can also trigger an attack, such as those chemicals added to increase a food's shelf life.  Heavily salted and spiced foods can trigger one, too.  Try to stay hydrated, tea or water.

If you have gallstones they're still in there, and if you are losing weight, your body might be creating more stones.  I hope that this attack clears up quickly!  Good luck and let us know how you're doing.

      thanks Lynda20916,

I've had one truly terrifying episode where I was constantly vomiting, my pee was like black tea and my poo was white! The consultant said this would have been a stone passing through my system. And since that day I have been careful with what I eat because the feeling was so awful. Today was nothing like that but a stark reminder to me to watch what I eat. I elected not to have surgery and to try to deal with it through the diet. I will add ham to the 'off' list.

at the moment it's just a nagging dull pain but am too worried to eat anything I may just have a cammomile tea.

You are so welcome!  I think what you experienced would have sent me to the emergency room in a panic!  For me, not having surgery wasn't an option.  I was pretty sick and had lost 30 pounds, but because I didn't have the classic symptoms it was hard to get anyone to listen to me.  Before I lost the weight I was over 40, fat and fair!  confused

If you continue to have bad symptoms, please consider that it's like keeping a defective part in a vehicle, you are constantly having to make do and work around something that, in the end affects the entirety. Also, it's almost impossible to ingest the nutrition you need to keep healthy.

Best of luck!  Take it easy, if you can, and let us know how you get on.

      Get the op

      it  won't go away

a low low fat diet only minimises the risk

You can only do what you are doing. Lie down with a hot water bottle.

You had ham in the rolls? Watch this there is more fat than you think in this even if it looks OK.

The only other option is to go to GP or even A and E.

    Hope this settles down.

Take care and keep in touch

      thanks sarah87162

Ive now added ham to the off list.

my consultant said women are more at risk of this than men although not uncommon in men to get it. He said to me it's normally found in women who are 'fair, fat and 40' !

I find the hot water bottle on my back more helpful, when my gallbladder is playing up I can't tolerate anything on my tummy area.

Attacks can be random, often I eat the same foods and one day it will say suddenly trigger an attack.
