Hi, I've been having alot of symptoms recently chest pain /electric feeling shooting chest pain, squeezing pain around upper left arm bicep tingly in left fingers all on and off and sore tender ribs around breast bone and tender ribs in back, I have been talking to people who suffer costochondritis and feel I have alot of the symptoms but Im also waiting to see a cardiologist in 2 weeks time as my doctor is thinking best to rule out angina, last night I had pains in my left shoulder for a couple of minutes then a strange feeling in my left arm which afterwards left my arm feeling like concrete, today my arm is still feeling quite strange, has anyone else experienced this before?, I'd be so grateful for replys, thank you

I get all the symptoms bar a 'concrete arm'. But I will say that my upper chest would get super tense and I wouldn't quite say it was concrete but it felt really hard.

Having costo in such a delicate and awkward part of the body has taught me that the muscles do very weird things when injured. I have experienced tingles, warm sensations, fluttering feelings... I guess I just liken the tense tightening feeling to a muscle cramp.

I say go to the doctor anyway. I'm even going to book an appointment because I've been getting palpitations and I want to make sure it's not a heart problem and my body's reaction to the swollen muscle. Kind of like when you hit your head and it throbs!

Hi, thank you very much for taking the time to reply, sorry I didn't explain properly the feeling I had in my arm by saying it felt like concrete I meant as in heavy to move, I to have been getting palpitations randomly it happens when I have no pain, also if I walk up stairs I can get the pain in my chest does this happen to you? Also I'm I right in thinking your reply said your pain is a electric type shooting pain in the chest and tight feeling around bicep, also I feel the chest pain on/off constantly everyday / night is this normal? sorry to be a pain I'm just out my mind with worry, x

I currently have palpitations almost non-stop. It gets faster when I walk up stairs and I get minor muscular tightness in my chest but I know it's not heart related because when I exercise, it's absolutely fine.

One thing I also learned with costo is that walking aggravates it which might explain your chest pain going up stairs and walking in general. Think of how your arms swing and your legs stride when they walk; they're doing opposite movements and stretching your chest with each step. When my pain was at its worse I actually had to force myself to keep my arms stiff at my side when I walked and not to walk too fast.

I don't get an electric pain but I know that certain times of day or certain positions can make the pain worse. I find it's worse when I sleep, something about the way I lie down puts pressure on my chest area - even when I sleep on my back - because all my body weight is supported by my chest when I sleep. When we're awake our legs and lower back carry the weight.

I've had it for over a year and it also caused me to have anxiety so I'm no expert but I have closely monitored my symptoms and tried to understand why each pain happens so I don't freak out and have a panic attack.

Like I said the part of the body the pain is in makes things so complicated! cry

did you ever find anything out? i’m 20 years old & have had literally these same exact symptoms for so long & it gives me the worst anxiety 😩 so I wondered what the cardiologists said? thank you

Hi, yes I went to see the cardiologist and the only Txt he gave me was another ecg which was fine again, he then dismissed me saying it definitely was due to my heart and most likely maybe be costochondritis! , I felt like a right mug but the pain and all the symptoms just vanished over night! And stay away for 3 months, only to all return about 3 weeks ago now, so I'm back to square one wondering what's up with me, but as it did go for a while I'm a little bit more convinced it's costochondritis but I'm still scared it's my heart sometimes so I've made a appointment to see my doctor to have further tests for a solid diagnosis for costochondritis. If you are still having the pain maybe it would be best to go to your doctor / A&E and have a ecg, blood tests to be on the safe side as I went along myself when I first started to experience the pain. X

    Hi,

I know this post is from a while ago but I'm wondering if you ever got any answers?

I can relate to all of the problems you have mentioned, the chest pain, wierd feeling in my arm and shoulder, palpitations.

I have been told that the chest issues are costochondritis and also related to reflux but I wondered if they were able to give you a definitive answer.

The palpitations I was told are stress and anxiety but it has happened when I am so calm!

It is just wierd how it can come and go. Just wondered if anyone had had any definitive answers?

    Thanks

Joanne, have you been tested for celiac disease and gluten sensitivity? I was misdiagnosed with costo when CD was the real reason. CD is often accompanied by reflux.

Hi there, hope you are doing well now. I got all the same symptoms as yours a couple of weeks ago, including the concrete arms. It scared me to death. After an ECG the doc confirmed costocondritis and advised nothing other than a pain killer. I am getting the pain over and over again and its very scary. Have you been able to find out anything more that can shed some light on this situation??

I was misdiagnosed with inflammation around my rib cage when my ECG, chest X-ray and echocardiogram came back ok. I had the electric shock feelings, pins and needles, a dull ache around my ribs and shooting chest pains with palpitations, it turned out I had multiple pulmonary emboli. If you are worried about your diagnosis, ask for a D-dimer blood test. If you are really worried just get a chest CT with contrast. I had to go privately to get mine because I was desperate. Lucky I did though.

Hi Moon53540, thanks so much for your reply. Yes, I will surely get these tests done too.  By the way, are you free of the inflammation now?

I was misdiagnosed with inflammation of the cartilage,  I think it is often just what doctors say to patients when they don’t know what is causing the chest pain! You do have inflammation with PEs, but it is pleuritic, which I do still get, but it isn’t as bad as before.

I'm worried that I have something else wrong and it's not costo. my left ankle has been bothering me plus it doesn't always feel like its muscular. may I ask what other symptoms you had? How did you go around getting the ct scan done. Any help would be very much appreciated. This has taken a toll on my happiness.

I had a dry cough in the morning and a gravelly feeling in my lung, I had trouble taking in a deep breath, I used to get hot flushes and sweats then freezing cold shivers, a sharp armpit pain that moved across my chest when I took a deep breath, this horrible suffocation feeling while I got really bad palpitations. I had to pay privately for a CT scan because the NHS isn't great. If you are worried about a PE, ask for a D-dimer blood test if it is high and you are getting symptoms they should offer you a CT with contrast, I had no idea about the D-dimer blood test until after I had my CT.

      What symptoms are you getting?

I really appreciate you replying, thanks. I have pain in my lower ribs on both sides, under my breast, sternum pain right in the middle, it feels sore under both of my armpits. weird pain, even sounds weird describing it. Sometimes it seems deeper in my chest maybe lungs. not sure which Dr. to see as I've seen a few. Recently, I wake up with soreness in my ankle radiating up to my calf. I went the emergency rm and they did an ekg, blood test, and xray and said everything looked fine and it was probably anxiety. I'm not out of breath, nor do I have any swelling. I feel like Memorial Medical center blew me off.

I continue to have pain. I've had it since October. I use to be active loving the outdoors and this has put a toll on me. I've been out of work because of the pain. Ice and heat seem to help. I sleep with a heating pad most nights. I don't feel ibuprofen does much help just bothers my stomach.

Do you have any suggestions? I feel I get more help and comfort from others that have dealt with similar pains. I feel like family and friends are tired of hearing of my pain.

You could have a hiatus hernia and some oesophagitis and gastritis, you would need an endoscopy to find this out.

I am not sure about the ankle and calf, I would have suggested a DVT but if you had it looked at by the doctors then it is unlikely to be that. You could have an injury maybe a problem with a tendon.

I found out I was vitamin D and B12 deficient and I used to get lot of cramps and pains as well as weak nails and my hair falling out in clumps, since taking a spray version of both I get a lot less pain and my hair and nails are much better now. Get your vitamin and mineral levels checked because deficiencies can cause all types of health problems including bad pain.

I hope you can find out what is wrong and fix it, there is nothing worse than feeling really unwell without understanding why.

Thank you for all your help. I'm going to take your advice and get some vitamin deficiency test done, I made an appointment with my Dr.

very interesting about the spray vitamins. I'm going to look further into that as well. my hair has been falling out, I thought it was stress, but your right on when you mentioned a vitamin deficiency.

I had terrible headaches, nausea, very bad chest pain, numbness, tingling, breathing problems, issues swallowing and stomach problems including no appetite and green diarrhea. Which ones are you on? rivaroxaban?

Did you ever get a diagnosis? My symptoms are very similar to yours and its been difficult to find any answers. I'm seeing a gastroenterologist this week to for the pain under my lower ribs, but the pain in my chest, armpit area and shoulder blade is constant. Worried about what this is.

I went to the ER 3 times, two different DR.s, massage therapist, etc. The DR.s kept telling me it was anxiety. I know my body and felt it was more then anxiety. I finally went to a cardiologist and was diagnosed with costochondritis. He had me do a stress test, holter, and echo. I was quiet scared, but felt it had to be done. I also had my leg veins examined.

I learned from my dentist that I had a rootcanal infection. I then realized alot of my health problems were based around the rootcanal.I'm still not sure if the costo was caused from it though. I was in pain since October and things are barely getting better. I did many things to feel better such as yoga, diet, cbd, teas, etc

I hope you feel better very soon.

Have you been to the ER? Try and get different opinions if possible.

I've not been to the ER but have thought about it many times. I first started having these pains in my chest in April 2019 and I did go to the ER. They said they couldn't find anything and it was likely pleurisy. I never felt that was accurate. It ended up going away after a few weeks. I started having the pain under my lower ribs in November 2019 (more prevalent on the left side). I had an upper abdominal ultrasound and a CT, neither showed anything. The chest pain began in January 2020 and I was referred to a cardiologist. He said the pain was costochondritis but did end up diagnosing an arrhythmia I wasn't aware of. The pain is now across both sides of my chest and is sharp in my left shoulder blade.

I don't think its anxiety either. There are auto-immune diseases in my family (mom has MS; sister and brother have Ehlers-Danlos). I do wonder if this is something auto-immune but am not sure how I would go about getting tested. I think at this point my PCP thinks I'm crazy because I have been in so much.

Thank you so much for responding to me... it helps to talk to someone and to know I'm not the only one experiencing these pains. I hope you feel better too!
