Sudden ringing in my left ear along with a slight full feeling and pitch change

So about a week ago when going to sleep I noticed I had a constant ringing in my left ear, which I thought nothing of. It wasn't until the morning when the ringing hadn't gone that I started to worry. That was also when I noticed the fullness and slight hearing loss, so I instantly thought it was wax and tried a couple of days of ear drops to try and shift what ever was in there.

A week later and I'm still experiencing the same issues. I saw a doctor yesterday who informed me I had a slight external ear infection in the ear which he gave me drops for, as well as eustachian tube dysfunction. Apparently it was the eustachian tube dysfunction that was causing the ringing and fullness. At the time that made sense, as the ear just feels like I need to pop it, and it never pops when I hold my nose and try and blow, but today I was able to pop the left ear, though nothing changed.

Does popping the ear not give instant relief of ear ringing? It is really starting to worry me that I have some how caused permanent damage to my ear.

I just had the same exact thing start today.  This morning I realized my hearing dull and muffled in one ear and slightly the same in the other.  I have had some allergies but they have been cleared up for the last couple of weeks.

My concern is that yesterday, I noticed that when I put my new (I've only had it for about 2 weeks) bluetooth device in my ear, that I get a slight pain.  Not when I'm talking but when it's just on and in my ear.  I put it in the other ear yesterday and the pain started there too.  I figured it was the little rubber thing that keeps it positioned correctly.  I thought maybe it was putting pressure on a sensitive part of my ear.

I don't use it for extended periods of time and it's not at some blistering volume, in fact I'd say my husband listens to the TV louder than my bluetooth!  We live in a small town and i only use it when driving around, maybe 1/2 hour to and hour at most and not even every day.

Is anyone else who is experiencing this problem using an in ear bluetooth device?  I'm not one to be paranoid but after I moved it from one ear to the other and experienced the discomfort (like a sharp headache in my ear...if that makes sense) right away...I'm hoping no one else in this thread uses one of these and this is something that will just go away.  In the mean time I thought I should chime in just incase.

Hi, I hope you are feeling better, my husband has the same symptoms as you and he is being treated with remedies for Meniere's disease and they are really working, the tinnitus is almost gone and the feeling of pressure in the ear too, "Meniere's disease is a disorder of the inner ear that causes spontaneous episodes of vertigo — a sensation of a spinning motion — along with fluctuating hearing loss, ringing in the ear (tinnitus), and sometimes a feeling of fullness or pressure in your ear. In many cases, Meniere's disease affects only one ear."

Maybe you should ask to your doctor about it.

I suggest you NEVER hold your nose and blow! I imagine that can cause damage within. It can also transfer germs from the nasal/sinus area into the ears and cause an infection. I don't know how safe it is, but if I tried to pop my ear(s), I did so by opening my jaw and/or by moving a muscle within the ear(s) that I learned to control years ago (different from the one that causes them to wiggle).

I had this problem as well as bad dizziness and it turns out because the eustachian tube had a blockage my own skin cells, when they break down as a normal process, create an acid.   As the tube was blocked this acid didn't drain and it proceeding to "eat" away at my bones.  The Mastoid bones as well as the 3 tiny ear bones.   It is called a Cholesteatoma.   If you don't have surgery to remove this cholesteatoma it can eventually eat through your skull and cause a menigitis, which would kill you.     I unfortunately, had a dr. who didn't check for a cholesteatoma when I first started having slight hearing problems and 3 years later, when I finally got the correct diagnosis, it has caused more problems and also affected my hair sensory nerve cells so I have lost hearing in that ear.   Normally, a cholesteatoma doesn't have to cause deafness as they can place ear bone prosthetics.  I would strongly suggst you get a CAT scan to make sure you don't have a Cholesteatoma growing.

I'm really getting frustrated. I've seen my ENT who tells me that he too has it and got it by realizing in med school that there was tinnitus and what it was.  Great Doc. Thanks but if I could ignore it I WOULD IGNORE IT.  These doctors are ridiculous and frustrating. Do you think I want to focus on this or that I choose to hear it?  That's my issue?

It started last year and over the last 9 months has gotten worse. Sounds like the insects cicadas chirping at a very high pitch only in my right ear. How does it just start all of the sudden?   I'm 44 not exposed to loud music no head trauma and don't get chronic allergies or nasal issues.  I've had very bad colds in the past but never had issues like this.

I did take a fishing trip on a 40 foot boat and it took me 2 weeks to get over being dizzy.  Could that have triggered this event?  How could an ENT if it were related to that not see it when giving me a thorough exam?  If it is related to that then is there nothing to see?

I need answers.  I refuse to believe it just happens and there's simply nothing that can be done. Sorry I'm not a defeatist and with medicine today there's got to be something that triggers it or can be done.

Thinking of getting device like a hearing aide that also masks noises but that's my last resort.

The way the doc describes it when you have partial hearing loss your ear tries to adjust because it cannot pick up sounds like normal so it strains to hear and that's when you pick up all the extra noises.  If that's true than wouldn't a simple hearing aide adjust any type of hearing loss (mine was described as very slight in right ear) and solve the issue?

    So dammed frustrating and pathetic

It is my understanding that the noise we hear in our ears when we have hearing problems especially in total deafness is NOT the background noise it is actually our own brain noises that we can now hear as we don't hear regular noises.  Could be just a total deaf phenomenon.   Did you Dr. do a CAT scan?    Need to rule out all possibilities. Tumor or Cholesteatoma.

I have exactly the same! The first time I went to the docs he couldn't see my ear drum was given antibiotics and spray took that for a week. The swelling clear up but the hearing loss is still a problem, I ave now finished the 2nd lot of antibiotics n d doc has now given me different ear drops n states that I should be able to hear again  after using them. But the constant ringing and not being able to hear properly is so depressing.  In my job I ave to wear an ear piece through my whole shift, this as u can understand is not going to happen, I am concerned on what I should do next as I am coming to the end of my FIT note. I just want to go back to being me 😕

same thing happened to me 3years ago. After seeing my primary physician and 3ent's , I was diagnosed with Menieres desease . Unfortunately there is no cure. Not only do I have ringing and fullness , but when the pressure is real high a get merniers attack and lose total balance. Very scary. Leaving me exhausted for days. The most they could suggest was low salt , no nicotine, no caffeine and minimal stress . Also to take vitamin bcomplex and gingo biloba. I have had periods of what you can call remission but just recently had an onset again. I am open for suggestions on any other advice anyone can give to help minimize the effects of this condition. Good luck to all of us, I know I need it

I just recently had these same symptoms everyone explained. First it started with a feeling like I was sinking into the ground. Then my hearing felt muffled, and no shorter there was ringing in my ears which got more intense as I was around more noise. The lack of clear hearing made me feel very distant and disconnected. I had very minor vertigo but that soon went away.

The ringing and muffling started to seem to be just in my left ear, and by the end of the day it was very apparent that it was my left ear. Another strange thing is that when I whistled, it sounded like it was higher pitch and echoing in my ear even if I covered one or both ears. Anyway, this all started yesterday and has continued. I noticed when I was trying to sleep the sound seemed deafening, and the only way to get rid of the ringing was to cover my right ear by sleeping on the right side of my body. Eventhough the high pitch sound, and muffling seemed and felt like they were coming from the left ear.

I hope there is nothing terribly wrong. Because I know that the fluid in your ears plays an important role in your equilibrium. And this ringing is really starting to get old. And just when I think it's gone or I'm used to it, the sound comes right back.

I have the same tinnitus as you describe it...however I learned that by turning upside down...like a handstand or an inverted position in which my feet are higher and my head leaning on the floor for about thirty secs more or less....when I come up soon after I feel relief as the tinnitus stops for several hours or even the day....I do it several times during the day...perhaps it works for you too.

Hi, I am from Nepal and I am having same problem since last evening. everything i hear is irritating me. i am using earphone to keep the sound away. whenever sound is produced around me i can feel it striking all over my head. it was followed by constant ringing. i dont know what triggered it but i was in peaceful situation when it started... no loud noises... i was feeling slight neck pain due to bad sleeping position. i will see the doctor in the morning. i read all the comments so i think i am well aware of my condition... hoping to get best solution possible.

So sorry to hear about your problem, are you listening to music through your earphone? If so that may be part of the problem...If not...I can tell you that mine started from listening to meditation practice through my earphones...I'm almost at that conclusion...however I discoveted that by doing an inversion...meaning putting my head lower ...to the floor and my body on my bed and maintaining the position so I could feel the pressure of the weight in my ears it would bring me relief...perhaps you can try it and see how it works for you..

thanks for your concern smile i am happy to know the method you tried. i got this problem only on my right ear. i did same and now its not ringing. i just put the weight of my head to my ear and the unpluged earphone while lying in bed. earlier i was not listening to music. i used earphone as a tool to prevent sound from getting inside my ear so it was unpluged earphone... now i am not feeling pain but i am not taking chances so i have kept my ear holes shut so that no air or sound reach inside to start the pain again. i dont want to feel that pain again... and i hope we all could just have normal hearings. all the best to everyone who are fighting with the sound.
