Suggestions for Foot-wear - post Bunion Surgery, as well as my experiences, so far -pain and recovery

For those of you who have half recent bunion surgery, I wish you all steady recoveries.

Over the past month, I have read discussions on this forum, and they all gave me great comfort and sound advice in the weeks leading up to my surgery, which took place on February 13th, and which I was very anxious about.

I had both feet done -simple bunion surgery, as opposed to the complicated surgeries that many of you have undergone. I was under general anesthetic; as well, both feet were frozen. My feet are in bandages, which will remain on until I see the surgeon again on February 28th. I can walk in a flat-footed manner around the house.

I had no pain to speak of the first day, as feet still frozen. The second day, I took 60 mgs of Tylenol 3 (codeine), and was able to manage what minimal pain I had with a couple of ibuprofen. Unfortunately, I did not keep my feet elevated enough yesterday, with the result that my feet are swollen, throbbing and I have had to take another 60mgs of Tylenol 3 to manage the pain. (Most important to keep feet elevated, for those of you about to have surgery).

Would appreciate any advice re footwear. We live in southern Ontario, and have had a lot of snow to deal with, so would have to be some shoe type that is water-proof for the purposes of getting from the walk-way to a car. As well, any tips on showering/keeping bandages dry would be most welcome!

Thank you all, in advance.

    Hi Carol,

Thanks for your concern! I have been off my feet for the past 48 hours plus hours. My husband and my son are doing the cooking, cleaning, shopping etc, so all is well. I'm enjoying watching the Olympics, reading etc while I recuperate. Showering worked well with cling wrap and bags, as per Patricia's suggestions.

    Take good care,

    Wendy-Anne

Good for you! Do you notice a difference? Can't wait to get bandage off in the morning. I already told him being able to without pain motivated me more than beautiful feet, so I know two toes will be shorter, that's ok with me. Neighbor coming tomorrow while husband goes to funeral to make sure I don't try something I shouldn't

    You take care, Carol

    Hi Angel,

I have been keeping my feet up and icing regularly, as

per the advice of many who are participating in this forum.

It does make a huge difference- I have my feet elevated most hours

    of everyday.

Thanks for sharing your experiences with me. Best

    wishes for your continued recovery!

    Hi Carol,

Yes - it makes a huge difference to swelling etc.

Good luck with having your bandages partially removed - a milestone!

    Kind regards,

    Wendy-A.

Loading up in the car was more traumatic than the bandage removal, actually. Doctor was gentle. He said the slight swelling was common & hat foot looked good. He had to also cut tendons below hammertoe as it went too long crooked and tight, so I have 3 sets of stitches, which come out the 27th. I couldn't figure out bruises on my belly; he said that was from the nurse's strapping me to the table, which I don t remember at all. I am actually tired out from the dr. Trip & company and am ready to take med & sleep with this foot on ice. Be encouraged, all, as each day is a bit better than the one before. Carol

    Hi Carol,

I can imagine that the trip to the doctor....an outing anywhere at this point - would be exhausting and

    traumatic.

I hope that you had a good night and feel better this morning.

Thanks for your words of encouragement to everyone. Wendy

    Hello WendyAnne79262...

I gather that your experience on bunion surgery was some time ago.

i just had mine. Doctor said he would only do one foot at a time.  Just had ,u surgery this month.  For those whom are considering...please do..I hope my review helps.  After suffering with painful feet...throbbing at nite and then all throughout work hours.  I decided to do surgery.  Glad I did.  I googled loss and read all I could on the surgery and recovery.  I'm on my second week post op.  Only taking 2 medication now.  I have the appointment to remove stitches soon. What I decided to do is to document a daily and weekly journal of my surgery so I may refer back to.  When I am ready to do the other foot. I'm using crutches and a walker for now.  My family has been great support.   Preparation is your best friend.  I bought the shower seat...bed tray...extra pillows, a round pillow...G-Girl(this was very handy...I mean it it was a blessing...if you don't know what it is ...pee while standing up...google it)....ice packs you'll need two at least....lazy Susan type holder to keep important items at bed side...reading  books and my iPad.....I will keep my post going at I go through the six week recovery.

    Hi,

I had my operation for both feets 4 weeks ago and was given "geisha"shoes :-D. Got my stitches removed week ago but I'm not sure if I still need to wear those shoes. How long did you needed tohave them?

Hope you are all well and back to normal after surgery...:-D
