Suitable Shoes?

Can anyone suggest some suitable shoes to wear after the plaster comes off? I've just had my plaster off and K wire removed and cannot get any of my shoes even my stretchy Sketchers on. What have other members worn for the first few weeks?

thanks in advance

      Thanks Beth,

Which Trainers did you get and did you go up a size?

I wore trainers that I already had but just kept the bad foot very loose! Didn't go up a size but my issue was being brave enough to get the trainer on! It does feel strange and a bit sore at first but you will get used to it! I even managed some dolly shoes (pumps) last week but they're not very supportive and fall off a bit!

They suggest to wear tide sneakers to have your foot in right position. I don't like them, but need to say they help also your ankle. I was wearing Champion stretchy pul on sneakers, they are more comfortable . To go outside I wear my old Adidas sneakers.

Hi Wendy, I was wondering that too, I am post operation 5 weeks now, my foot is still as swollen now as it was after the operation. I lose my shoe after Easter and don't have a clue what I will be able to wear... I will not wear ugg type boots as I belive that me wearing them caused me lots of problems...

Hi Wendy, I'm 8 weeks post op & got rid of the heel walking boot 11 days ago & I am wearing fitflop clogs(the suede ones) that I already have, they are slightly too big for me anyway, so are perfect for my slightly swollen foot. They are comfy with thick socks & I can walk quite well in them.

I had fusion of the MTP joint & cx not bend my big toe so difficult to get any other shoes on st the moment although I can get my old trainers on they are slightly too small so not much use. Good luck

I'm 9 weeks post op bi-lateral scarf and akins. yesterday I went to Evans the shop and bought a pair of lace up deck shoes width EEE! Look nice and very comfy I didn't have to go up a size. Cant wait for this swelling to go!

    Hi,

I ordered a pair of trainers from JD Williams catalogue n size 9 EEE fitting and I also ordered  a pair of canvas shoes from DB in the widest itting they do. They are fairly comfoble but I cannot get into any of my own shoes or trainers yet.

Was advised to wear loose fitting shoes. Toe can be very stiff for the first few weeks after coming out of the special shoes or plaster cast which makes getting your foot into shoes quite difficult at first. I could not get my foot into any shoes for the first few weeks. I took some walking sandals with me to my consultation and confirmed that they would be ok. As they opened across the top and front, they were ideal. I checked with the consultant about a number of other pairs of shoes. I must have looked like a bag lady as I arrived with a bag full of shoes! Thought that it was best to check! Pretty much anything which is flat, soft, supportive and opens across the top of the foot. Did look pretty bad as it was late November and I had to wear socks with my sandals ! After about 2 weeks I was  able to wear walking shoes which were always big because I wore them with two pairs of walking socks for comfort. I could wear these with one pair of thin socks and had to loosen the laces so much that I could just fasten them! At about 11 weeks post op I bought some biker type boots from Evans with soft uppers in a size larger than I normally wore and an EEE fitting! They were fine but most of the time I wore the walking shoes. Went on holiday at about 14 weeks and wore new trainers most of the time.

A little word of advance warning- I am now 5 and a half months post op and pretty much none of my pre op shoes fit! Why? Well, the big toes are much straighter and consequently I have gone up a size! might not happen to you , of course. However, I hadn't given that any thought at all!

    Good luck?

Hi. I have worn trainers new balance in a size bigger, uggs and crocs. At 11 weeks I tried a hard pair of shoes and regretted it so back in trainers.  Will hopefully be flip flop weather soon. Good luck.

Hi Wendy, I'm 9 weeks post op and all I've worn for the last few weeks since my bandage came off are my memory foam suede Sketcher boots, thank heavens I bought them, as I've also managed to start driving again this week - having said that, it will be a while before I get a structured shoe on again. All I would say is don't rush it and undo all the good, Julia

Hi Julia, could you please let me know the name and type of Skechers, I have some trainers bought well before my op, but I know they won't fit my op foot, they are quite a tight fit, but they are so comfortable on the sole so know this make should be the best to buy.  I'm 3 weeks, and looking forward to losing the wedge shoe in few weeks, hopefully.

Wishing you a quick recovery Wendy. I'm almost 8 weeks post op. I was told by my surgeon to only wear a good pair of trainers until my 12 week check as they support the foot. Too scared not to obey!! I have Asics in a 1/2 size bigger with the laces very wide and wear them with Primark  "Comfy Socks" Amazingly they are, they have a double cushioned thick sole, they are bliss! Who would have believed it?!!!

Thanks everyone for your replies, my surgeon didn't offer suggestions as to the type of footwear I should wear....I think I need to go shopping and investigate trainers as that sounds the most sensible route..I can't keep wearing my heel walking shoe as that defeats the object...I can get on today some old boot type slippers but they offer no support..You know what they say "when the going gets tough, the tough go shopping!
