Surgeon wants me to have local injection

Greetings. My x-rays and CT scan indicate moderate arthritis in both hips. I have really intense pain in buttock near left hip and surgeon says right hip needs replacement. My question is has anyone had local anaesthetic in hip to ascertain if hip pain relates to wear and tear or nerve damage etc? Thks for input.

Hi Lyn! I had a THR, right hip may 7. My surgeon did the local anesthetic injection a month prior to surgery to help convince me that it was my hip that needed replaced due to arthritis. I had pain in right buttock, almost like, sciatic pain as well as slight pain in hip area. Wasn't really bad pain except when riding my horse. Once surgery took place, it was discovered I was bone and bone. The local anesthetic injection gave me a few days relief, so that confirmed that my hip was the issue, not something else.

Not a steroid injection, just an anesthetic injection. Only deadened area locally and used an x ray machine to guide injection. Painless. I wasn't convinced it was my hip so surg eon did this procedure to prove it was!

Hi Kathy. My surgeon is not sure it's my hip because my X-ray of left hip is not bad he says. Right hip is a lot worse but pain in left buttock behind hip. Weird!

My x rays all showed arthritic cysts and bone spurs. Never bone on bone, which went in noticed via x ray until the actual surgery. My pain was pretty much level 0, except when on my horse. I've never had good flexibility in that hip, from the time I was young, so hoping this helps. Try th e injection. It's painless, doesn't take long , and will give you piece of mind!

I'm probably going to be doing the injection soon too. My Dr wants to check for infection and to convince me I need a revision in my right hip. I had it scheduled but canceled - I was just tired of 1 year of medical stuff and needed a break from Dr's. My dr puts you out completely for this injection and uses X-ray as guidance.

Hi Anne. I'm asking about local anaesthetic not steroid injection. My surgeon says a radiologist guides the injection. He did not say if I would be sedated. I expect to be fully awake.

I had several injections with local anesthetic and steroid. When the radiologist got shot in right place i had immediate and near complete relief for few days from local anesthetic and few months of moderate relief from steroid. My hip did not have normal anatomy so even under X-ray they missed twice. So test does depend on skill of doctor to get shot in correct spot. If you get relief then you can be confident that is hip. If you don't get relief there is a chance it is because the doctor missed, although if you have a normal hip I think unlikely the doctor would miss
Each time I had done, i had a different doctor. They all did it slightly different. At worse felt like bee sting. Hurt for a few moments and that was it.
It's the same procedure with or without steroid so if you are not ready for replacement then would consider steroid as can relieve pain for serveral months. However if you have steroids you must way between 3-6 months to have replacement because steroid increases risk of infection.

Tks very much Laura for information. I am thinking I will put off hip op, if indicated. I travel frequently and I can tolerate the discomfort at this time. I much appreciate all the input I've received here. Tks again.

Hi Lyn
I've not had that myself but it is a standard way of identifying the cauise of pain in horses. If you anaethetise one area and the pain stops you know that is the problem.

Hi Michael. It all sounds logical however I understood a prior CT scan and current x-rays would indicate a hip replacement was necessary. My surgeon says my left hip is not too damaged. He asked me about falls etc. He's a little mystified as to why my pain is not where it should be if hip replacement is indicated. I'm always concerned about the risks of infection with procedures involving piercing skin and dental work. He says rusk is 2/400 so I'll go ahead and have the procedure. My pain is tolerable but worse than a year ago when I had none. Tks for your input.
