Swelling post hemorrhoidectomy what's normal?

Hi,

I'm now 48 hrs post hemorrhoidectomy. I had one "mixed" hemorrhoid removed. I've got quite a lot of swelling to the point where I can't see my anus opening. There are 3 distinct areas of swelling. One area covers the entire half of my anus on one side and the 2 others cover the other side. They are protruding quite a bit. The 2 smaller ones are taking on a darker colour almost like a thrombosed hemorrhoid. Is any of this normal???

I'm icing and doing epsom salt baths. would love to hear from those with experience. thanks in advance!!

      Hi,

I never had a patient administered analgesic pump I had spinal anesthesia instead of a general. My surgeon said 2 days before a bath and it's been over 48 hrs. I also don't have any open wounds. My surgery was performed with the ligasure device that cuts and cauterizes simultaneously. I was also informed that the surgeon stitched on top of this. Were you told why 3 days?

    Hi Cat,

Glad to see your surgery went well. Just keep in mind your whole anal cavity will be swollen for minimum two weeks, based on my own experience but it will subside. Just try your best not to strain and keep taking the stool softeners. The two thrombosed hemorrhoid thingies you describe sound like what I had. It will go down over time as the swelling reduces over time. Hang in there, try not to worry and get some rest more than anything. Remember, you are very swollen down there so it really hard to determine what your anus will look like until it subsides. Once that happens then you can determine if there were any complications. I know its easier said than done as I had the same question as you but just remember you are very early in the recovery stage. Get well soon!

hi Pono, thanks again for your support and advice. comforting to know that's what I'm experiencing is similar to what others who have had this surgery have also experienced in regards to swelling that looks like thrombosed hemorrhoids. Yes, it's hard not to jump the gun and to try and figure everything out before allowing enough time to pass by to really get an idea of what's happening. My swelling has gone down somewhat today, but I've noticed a spike in pain. This happened particularly through the night and I wasn't able to have a very restful sleep. Trying to spend as much time in bed icing and resting as I really notice that when I'm on my feet the pain increases. Reminding myself that this is going to be a process that unfolds over several weeks or even months and trying to stay as positive as possible. thanks again!!

hi Valerie, thanks for your reply. So sorry to hear that your recovery has been challenging. In addition to the type of surgery and the number of columns removed, I think it can also come down to luck of the draw as to who has an easy versus more challenging recovery. I do hope that things start improving for you . I hope you have family and friends that you can lean on during this difficult time and can have moments of relief to help recharge your battery. There is also these boards to seek support and we are here for you!!

I seem to be having more pain today but some of the swelling has decreased ever-so-slightly. For this, I am grateful. I would definitely say that although I think my recovery so far has been pretty good, I'm still in a significant amount of pain and this surgery is no laughing matter. My heart really goes out to those who may not have access to the tips provided on this board and who are struggling through the recovery process. My heart also goes out to those who have had challenging recoveries. I am by no means out of the woods yet so I'm just trying to take it day by day and be grateful for any small victory such as a slight decrease in swelling. I haven't been to the bathroom yet today though so things could all unravel.

      Take care

    Hi Cat,

Was wondering how your recovery has been since you made the thread? I am myself now 7 days post-op, 3 internal removed, and a bit concerned about my swelling. It is similar to what you described, it covers half of my anus and was in the beginning one big lump but has now separated to two lumps with, what I suppose, is the old normal skin, separating them. The lumps are like two big hemorrhoids to the feel and touch.

I also have quite much leakage, I guess it is from the wounds inside but I know I've had similar "leakage" when my hemmies were prolapsing before they went back in again. But the lumps are not directly painful to the touch so guess all of my pain sensations are from the internal wounds.
