Swimming pool??

Posted , 9 users are following.

Hi ladies im going on holidays tomorrow , are swimming pools a no no ? How about using vasoline as a barrier ? Does it work to keep the chlorine away ? At the moment I just have inflamation and feel a bit burning , am using the ointment once a day but just when I feel it's easing a bit it seems to be a little worse the next day for no reason , I'm gone mad wondering am I using the cream too much or too little ? How long should it take for the inflamed feeling to totally pass , I'm so tormented wondering if I'm using the ointment too long as I don't want the skin to thin out and feel worse , sorry for all the questions I'm tormented and in bad form 😪

If I don't have a bad flare up, swimming pools are usually ok. Vaseline works well as a barrier but we are all different, so you have to try it out, of course. When it comes to steroids, I am unfortunately as confused as you are. It sure gives relief again itching but after a week or so I feel that I am even more sore than before. The doctors don't believe me and they try to persuade me to go on but usually I take a break when it starts to feel raw.

Thank you yes I was going from dermovate cream to ointment and I would get some relief for a few days ( not total relief but an improvement ) then I would feel as if it was getting a bit inflamed again , I didn't know which was best but a few days ago I changed bk to ointment as my skin felt really raw from the cream and it burned when I applied so after changing to the ointment I got a bit better but today I feel a bit worse again , not much but a bit , oh it would drive you insane wondering what to do but I'm gonna stay on ointment and see how it goes , I might leave pool til near end of Hols in case it flares it up , that would ruin my holiday and put me In worse form but I'll def use the vasoline and give it a go before I come home , wish I could be happy but feel very down going on hols and having all this over my head , thanks for the reply

Vaseline should do the trick. I wouldn't stay in long though. It's hard when you re on holidays. If there a rinse off area/shower where the pool is I would be heading for that after.

I have been using Clobetosol regularly since 2009 -  if I have flare up, twice a day. If I'm good once a day working towards every second day. I have never had a problem with the ointment. Only with LS.

try and not stress and have a great holiday x

Hi Deb it's great to get some reassurance , I'm scared of using the steroid , I'm afraid it might wear away some of my bits ! So do you mean you mostly use the cream once a day or a little less , what I mean is do you get long periods in between flare ups where you only have to use the steroid 2 per week , and when your not in a flare up are you totally pain and soreness / itch free ? Iv had this inflamation for a Yr now with not much relief in that time but have only started the steroid a couple of Mths ago so I'm not sure what to be doing ? Thanks gonna try enjoy the hols best I can x

Personally I stay away from swimming pools and its chemicals.  There have been other discussions on this site regarding this topic.  Perhaps have a look there as well.

      Hi there.

I have been told by 2 different consultants NEVER to use Vaseline but Aqueous ointment as a barrier. It works as a barrier and moisturiser whereas Vaseline can irritate and has no moisturizing properties apparently. It's very cheap and come in really big tubs.

I've established through listening to a lecture by expert on LS that there is so much scaremongering about steroid cream thinking the skin that simply does not apply to LS suffers as the condition actually thickens the skin . Use scale as prescribed by remember it is essential to rub the cream in for 90 seconds. It has to penetrate to the deep later of inflamed skin and only about 30/40% of it is absorbed anyway ! Personally I would make sure you wash after weeing, I just use water - some use spray bottle with water and pinch of bicarb. Pat dry afterwards. I use Aveeno shower gel, absolutely brilliant , pure, gentle and foams slightly so you actually feel clean ! Recommended by a dermatologist. Put on a good dollop of aqueous ointment and hit that pool. Don't stay in long and see how it goes. If it makes it worse you know to avoid it and just use the poolside shower. Hope any our all of this helps. Be positive and don't let this hateful condition ruin you're holiday. Wishing you all the best. Let us know how you got on. HAPPY HOLIDAYS ! xx

I am always using something. I will always use estrogen at least twice a week whether flare up or not. I use daily bi carb/water spray and alternate each week with salt/water spray. Sometimes I use emuaid, sudacreme, paw paw, the list is endless. I've found the sudacreme helps the itch. I'm really wary of what I put on the skin around anus. Really watch my diet and have cut out sugar. A few ladies on here do have problems with Clobetesol. Initially I found it burning a bit but really have no problem with it. Specialist told me she had been to a forum on LS and they have changed their way of thinking - if there is a flare up use it twice daily for at least a month and then reduce down.  These days I pretty much do whatever I think will get me through. Flare ups are constant but I find they are lessening in frequency and strength. I used to split and tear really easily but haven't for years now. Maybe I'm just more careful though. I did have my head buried in the sand on this for a long time and didn't fully grasp what I had. Then when I realised the medical profession has no idea I got angry and that's when I took control. I wish I had of taken the initiative a lot sooner, but as they say in the classics, better late than never 😜.

Hi Deb, I applaud you for your fighting spirit and for as you say taking matters into you're own hands and getting great improvements through trial and error. I think the Oestrogen must have made a huge defense to the elasticity remaining in your skin, I got LS after menopause and think it is the lack of oestrogen causing thinning of the skin that caused it in MY case ( I know not in all cases ) I was poo poo'd when I suggested this though ! I've learned more on this sight in 20 mins of trawling through threads than I have in 4appointments with gynaecologists. Well done you and thanks for the positive reinforcement. Xx

Sorry, I meant oestrogen must have made a huge DIFFERENCE not defence. (predictive text - the other bain of my life ! 😊 )

Deb, your very good description pretty well sums up what I am learning.  I have bought so many different ointments.  Sometimes I will use three different ones at one time.  That is probably not the thing to do.  But I have this urge to use more thinking if one doen't work, the other one will.

Chlorine in the pools is hated by Lichen Planus, and has removed mine before. Unfortunately the pool owners have stopped me swimming because my legs lesion is so bad it 'frightens' people.  Please do not use vaseline or any grease in swimming pools,

it does a lot of harm to the chemicals in the water.  Sea water is good too, the more salt in it the better. Both relieve the itching even if it doesn't clear it.
