Swollen / sticking out ribs?

My costo is so different to other people's that i'm constantly convinced it isn't that and it's something more sinister.

Mine is around my lower left ribs. For the last 18 months they have stuck out and feel like they are swollen. They would feel bruised if i pressed them quite hard. They ache around the bottom and around the side.

The most swollen part is around the middle of the left lower ribs. Not around the middle of my chest, but the middle of the left ribs themselves, which is where i believe there is a costo joint. It gets more swollen as the day goes on so is much more prominent at the end of the day. And i feel the ribs on that side feel harder than the ones on the right. Thats a weird thing to say because it's bone but they do feel so hard when i press them.

i have had ultrasounds, x rays, ct scans, and a nuclear bone scan which showed inflammation in the area, so i know it wont be anything more worrying, but still i worry because the symptoms are not the same as everyone else's. i OBSESS over it. i check how it feels maybe 10/20 times a day. i convince myself it's something terminal. ARGH.

The area of your pain is almost identical to mine. I have very little if any pain in the center of my chest. Mine also hurts around my upper left side and sometimes in my armpit and upper inner arm. I feel the hardness on the ribs you're describing too. I have more discomfort at night. I have had mammograms recently and a CT scan in the fall of 2017 . No issues, except the last mammo showed a place that the radiologist was a little concerned about, but after an ultrasound, he said it was a lymph node and nothing to worry about. Two doctors say its costo, not to worry, take tylenol and apply Voltaren gel. I have swelling too on the ribs just below my left breast. sometimes the pain radiates into my left breast too. The pain is not severe, but as you said, it makes you fearful that its something worse. I plan to see my doctor again soon and have another CT scan and mammogram if insurance will cover it. I am more comfortable with my bra on and also a firm support cami like a spanx helps too. But you can't wear those all the time! It does help to see that others are dealing with similar symptons.

      Hi Sue!

I think you replied to me last time and said your symptoms were like mine!! I do feel so reassured to know that someone's symptoms are like mine!

I'd probably be reassured if I had all the tests done again, especially because my swelling has got a lot worse recently, but then I also worry about too much radiation so don't want to give myself more to worry about.

The nuclear bone scan I had specifically found inflammation so that was pretty inclusive. But then I worry that inflammation could be a precurser to cancer. I feel the longer I have it the less worried I'll be but i doubt it!

I have never heard of the ribs sticking out? What does your doctor say? It sounds like you have had all the test and that is a very unusual situation. Are you a very thin person? Maybe that is why your ribs are sticking out the inflammation is making them do so. Do you have pain and hurt all the time? There has to be an answer. Good luck

LOL, no, sadly I am in no way a thin person! They don't stick out so much as bulge out almost! Its like they get bigger through the day and feel like the bone has swollen by the evening!

i had that. before i got diagnosed my GP asked what i thought it might be and i said hernia. then after explaining what costo was she said the lump in my lower rib was because i have "floating ribs", which simply means it doesn't attach all the way around to the sternum. so it's an open cage, that's why it seems to stick out.

    walking used to hurt,

I would Google floating ribs also. but think back think back to when you got hurt and pulled muscles in your cheast . I was pulling on a picnic table and didn't realise that it was to heavy and gave it a pull and omg it hurt so bad. I should have went to the e.r. and didn't because of my child's b.d. party. my ride and cheats and shoulders were all pulled. than all kind of tests couldn't reveal the pain Sonia grams MRI.s neck pain all the time heart echo gram .blood work . trays only thing that came out was on the MRI I had athiritis in shoulders and neck. hot and cold compresses help the ride. I did this 16 teen yrs ago and it does lighting up but when you move a certain way it triggers it and it takes a few days to settle .the rid on my left side under it would be swallowing and painful. than it would sometimes be my right side. and just found out I have a fatty liver started. sometimes it knocks the wind out of me the sharp pain in the middle of my chest beween the ribs . mostly in stermen area. glad you found this site. and worrying makes it worst. try the hot and cold . mostly hot helped me. I never took a drug for it just Advil.and it eased the pain.

      Hi Jane

I still have the same sticky out rib feeling but I dont worry about it at all anymore. Sometimes it's painful, sometimes it isn't.

I do suffer from terrible health anxiety so I dont think that helped. About 6 months ago I started to have a pain in my hip so that became my new obsession! Once I stopped thinking about my ribs I stopped noticing the discomfort as much. Now that I'm talking about it I can feel it again so I think it's still there, I just don't notice it as much.

What symptoms do you have and what tests have you had?

I've had extensive bloods, ultrasounds, colonoscopy, next week I'm having a thorasic MRI and I'm under a pain specialist now so at least he is trying to help.I always had a stiff rib cage.Even if I had a massage in a hotel I would feel battered for a day after.Last April I had bad food poisoning with symptoms coming and going for a month.I am sure that this triggered some kind of an exaggerated auto immune response.I had also had the death of my sister the previous year so lots of stress and after shock grief from that.

Thanks for your reply. Its a nasty thing and I'm sure I will get through it but there are days when it flares up when I really despair. All I want is to wake up normal and get on with my day. I will never take my health for granted again. Thanks for replying.

I'm so sorry about your sister. I do think grief of that level can do funny things to our bodies.

I think the MRI will definitely give you some answers. Good luck and please come back and tell me what your results are? x

I'm doing pretty good. I was under agree 2 weeks ago . I had to make a decision about putting down my 11 year old ma.ma Boston terrier . and it threw me really off. I was so depressed and I have ibs also . so between having diarrea and chest pain from the cosco. the only thing I found was heat rubbing my hands together and putting them on my sternum area. just remember heat helps . never thought that ice does tho. I also get back aches after the attacks. but I think its my age . that's doing that. good luck honey it. gets better .

My symtpoms seems to be exactly the same as yours! I went into the doctor about a month ago because of sudden pain in my ribs after overexertion and because it looked as if they were sticking out on the lower left side or as if there was a bump there. He diagnosed me with costochondritis and said the appearance was due to inflamed cartilage. I've been googling like mad and freaking out because everything I read about costochondritis places it higher up on the rib cage and doesn't mention any visible swelling or changes. So thank you for posting this!
