Hi,
I'm 49 yrs old and on 7th April I'm due "The works." I have two fibroids one about 8cm the other not far behind and have suffered with painful, heavy, prolonged periods for who knows how long.
One problem I have is I'm not sure I want or need my ovaries removed.
The consultant said they'd take them in case there was ever a problem further down the line but is it really necessary? I've read that going through surgical menopause is worse than going through it naturally. A friend said I'm probably going through it anyway (if I am, I have no symptoms) but that doesn't mean I want to be launched into it in this way; especially having to deal with everything else after the operation. I also read, with surgical menopause, there's more chance of developing heart disease and cognitive disorders such as dementia.
I'm due at the hospital on 14th March for another injection, can't remember what it's called but it's to shrink the fibroids before the operation. I Don't know if I'll be seeing the consultant again then or just a nurse; can't see them wasting a consultant's time on an injection, I dunno
If I don't see the consultant does anyone know when I will? Sorry, I've never been through a major operation before so not sure what to expect or how things work.
I'm also not sure how I feel. In fact I don't seem to feel anything, it's as if life is just going on as normal but that doesn't feel right. This may sound silly but I'm more bothered that I don't feel anything than I do at the prospect of the operation itself. I'm concerned that it will hit me hard either just before or after the operation. I think I'm just weird, pity that can't be fixed along with my fibroids. 😣
Any thoughts or advice would be much appreciated..
So, sorry for the essay
Many thanks,
Esmay x

Hello
Sorry about the graphic detail and I am going to reply individually whether you want me to or not, lol, but for now this is about all I can manage on this tablet
Operation went fine, came home Sunday. Went to loo Monday morning had one little bit then no more. After that I was totally backed up, Monday night felt like I was trying to pass a baby elephant. Called doc and they said to stop the laxatives but keep on with the softeners as I was also experiencing overflow. Things seemed a little better Tuesday/Wednesday but now i have greenish diarrhoea. Now I know this is probably because it's went through my body really quickly but what should I do. Should I stop taking the softeners as well? I'm scared I go back to being bungled up again, really don't want to go through that again.
Big hugs to you all xx

Good to know you are through this. I got home Sunday too. My bowels are ok - however my incision isn't! My advice get in touch with your GP asap. I am back at hospital tomorrow to check my problems - and this was fast tracked by my GP. Fingers and toes crossed you get over this soon!

Hi Esmay,
Glad to learn that everything went fine and that you're home again. As Glennie said, I suggest that you call your gp and get advice on whether or not to stop the softeners.
Take cae of yourself, and get plenty of rest! Please let us know how you're doing! xx

Reading everyone's comments are helpful, however I am extremely nervous for my up coming hysterectomy on May 16th. I have four 5cm fibroids and one 6cm and about 10 to 15 small ones that were visible on the ultrasound. I am scared. So glad things went well for you all. I had a myomectomy in 2006 to remove four fibroids and now I'm 41 years old no children but can't have them anyway. Please pray all goes well for me as I am goingboitnof my mind.

Hi Reece,
I understand that you are worried. It's only natural. I do think that after you heal from the op you are going to feel so much better! You're in my prayers! xx

There's one good plus point on your side - your age. I think the younger you are the easier you recover. Like I have said before you will be really scared before - I burst into tears about half an hour before my op - but everyone around me were lovely and supportive. Part of getting through this whole thing is what pain and discomfort you have now - and 6 months down the line having that all gone. The few weeks from op to post-op will be a challenge - but in the grand scheme of things - it's no time at all. Good luck to you - and let us know how it goes!!!

Hi Reece,
I get where you are coming from, I think we all do. I worried about it quite a bit the nearer it got but it really isn't as bad as I thought. Don't get me wrong as it is a big deal just not as painful as I imagined.
I'm sure you will be fine, it'll all be over before you know it.
Hugs, Esmay x
