Tamsulosin vs Alfuzosin

Posted , 14 users are following.

I am currently taking two Tamsulosin every day - one in the morning and one in the evening. I have read in various places on the net that Alfuzosin may be more effective at relieving urinary retention symptoms. I don't know if this true or not and would appreciate any advice from anyone on this forum who has experience with both. If I decided to switch to Alfuzosin how should I switch - gradually or all at once? The cost of Alfuzosin is higher than Tamsulosin so for me to switch it would have to be worth it - actually, the Alfuzosin is a LOT more expensive than Tamsulosin.

Thanks in advance for any advice/info.....

Lester, What "flavor" of diuretic are you prescribed? Are you BPH or LTUS ? Any issues/side effects?

      Lester to Chuck68670

Hydrochlorazide 25mg. 1 small pill in the morning daily for BPH retention. No issues or side effects. Has other benefits also. Consult your doctor.

I looked up Tamsulosin, Alfuzosin and Doxuzosin on my pharmacy web site and both the Alfuzosin and Doxuzosin are listed as antihypertensives but the Tamsulosin is not. So, this confirms the idea that the Tamsulosin is more targeted at relaxing the urinary tract and is not intended for blood pressure lowering, although it can do that. So, if one is on another med for blood pressure then takes the Alfuzosin or Doxuzosin in addition to that, it might really lower BP and cause dizziness. So, my conclusion from all of this is that I will be monitoring my blood pressure before I switch to Alfuzosin, if I switch. From the comments I am reading here it doesn't appear as if the Alfuzosin does a better job of increasing urine flow, but does do a better job or reducing retro - is that correct?

I used Alfuzosin for about two years, after switching from Rapaflo. Rapaflo caused RE, and didn't really improve my symptoms. Alfuzosin worked well without RE, but it stopped working. I am now starting Tamsulosin for the first time.
