Tapering bisoprolol. Bob52204

Bob52204, I hope you find this new post, I literally lost the last I had written you. It is some where in a maze of other posts...

I have a couple questions if you would be so kind as to enlighten me.

You may recall I was tapering off of 10mg of bisoprolol. Currently I am at 5 and tomorrow will go to. 3.75 and a little...

As I make cuts in this drug I have found I will have 0-2 days of palpitations and low level anxiety. It then clears and I feel normal again.. only to return with the next cut..

I assume this is my body adjusting to a lower dose . And once done it is adjusted.

One of the questions I have is.. did you have this? I'm trying to figure out if I keep lowering the dose and making it through the adjustment if it will lessen or if it will simply return worse later.

While I know no one can predict the future .I trust your experience with this.

I did see a MD yesterday and discussed stopping this drug with him... he was rather flip and simply said if I had problems to increase the dose otherwise to lower it....which I guess is totally correct, I was just looking for a bit more guidance.

I did cut 1.25 mg and 3 days later another 1.25... and I learnt the way I usually do,.. the hard way... that it was too much too fast....after 3 rough days I have felt back to normal today....well, normal for being on this drug anyway, which is totally different from drug free normal..

I obviously want off of this as fast as safely possible..and am willing to go through a day or two of feeling uncomfortable to get there sooner as long as I'm not racing to a bad place...

Even when I have the "bad" days my RHR stays in the low 40s... I do have days with the first cut where it went to 52ish but no more... predrug... it was a reliable 64.. and my bp always is low....sometimes probably a little too low..

I guess I'm curious... did your heart rate and blood pressure increase as you lowered the dosage or does it happen after you are off just BAM.. ?

Again thank you for any information you can share

    Hi there,

Last year I was taking Biso  2.5 mg daily. This was prescribed when in Feb/16, I started having SVT.  I took it until  May 2017.

When I was on it I felt like crap.  My heart rate was very low, blood pressure very low, and I felt like a zombie. Could not function. I was so listless and tired. Felt like any small tack was huge.

Then I decided to have an ablation done May/16.

My EP specialist said that I must come off the Biso approx 5 days prior to ablation. I asked him is it okay to just stop it like that. he said, it was just fine.  Well.........it wasn't fine.  My legs were jerking and I had such anxiety .

I never made any connection at the time, not knowing anything about side effects stc.

When I went for the ablation the end of May/16, I could not even walk from the car to the hospital, my legs felt weak and jittery.   My ablation was postponed for 3 weeks, so I just stayed off the biso and never went back on.

But because of all the leg jerking and anxiety I was put on a benzo and later added Trazodone to the mix.

Because of the benzo being in my system, My ablation was unsuccessful. Atleast that is what the EP specialist thought.

I now realize that I was going through withdrawl of the biso.  My heart rate and blood pressure did go up but manageable.

I am now weaning off benzo and trazodone to be completely drug free for a second attempt of an ablation.

Weaning from these has been going on since last MArch/17.   Doing it very slowly but has still been a nightmare.

I know realize how this crap controls your life when you are weaning off of it

      Hi.

I was taking Beta blockers for two years (also for Spvt). I managed to wean off in the 2nd attempt, but I had to wean off for 6-8 Months (slowly).

While I was weaning off from BBs, I started to take very small doses of Valium (Benzo) to lower the anxiety and elevated heart rate from a Beta blockers withdrawal.

Anyway, at least from my experience: after 2 years of taking Beta blockers, I needed to wean off for 6-8 Months slowly. It was a hell.

When I have quit BBs, I was still taking benzo for 2-3 Months (I was taking it in total around 10 Months).

At least in my case, quitting Benzo was nothing compared to quitting Beta blockers.

It was easy. I only had 2-3 weeks of sligh anxiety when I have weaned off from Benzos and I was totally fine after 2-3 weeks.

Also, I would like to add: if you are still experiencing withdrawal problems, in my opinion, that is still a withdrawal from Beta blockers, and NOT from Benzos.

Unless if you were taking extremely high doses of benzos, I think you shouldn't be addicted after 3 Months of taking them.

On the other hand, it is very probable that you are still suffering from BB's withdrawal especially since you have quit them cold turkey.

So, just my opinion, I think that you could try to speed up weaning off from Benzos since Beta blockers are what caused all these problems.

But of course, each of is different and your case might be different.

So, you should also listen to your body.

      Good luck

      Hi Bob

Thank you so much for your reply

Here is a little timeline to all of this

Started Biso Feb/16.  Took it until May 25/16.  Ablation was to be done May 31/16- that was stopped cold turkey. Ablation was cancelled May 31/16 as soon as I got to the hospital as there was another emergency.   Ablation postponed until June 22/16. I did not start up Biso again/

But because of the way I was feeling I was put on Clonazepam  (.25 mg) approx  June 12/16

So when I went for the ablation, the EP specialist could not detect the irregular circuit. He thinks it was because of the benzo.

Anxiety was severe. I think because of having really bad stomach issues prior to all of this, the anxiety really kicked in. Then after my first SVT attack in Feb/16 that set anxiety off too.

Continues on the benzo and and things were to a great deal better.

So Novemeber/16 I was put on Traxodone also

In March /17 EP specialist said he would try the ablation again but I must be off both of these medications.

So starting  March 13/17    the story begins with the weaning.

At that point I was taking  .25mg Clon      and 75 mg   Trazodone

Today, i am down to  :

Still at .25 mg Con         and down to about 8 mg Trazodone

      Has been a nightmare.

But as I mentioned earlier the Biso I think was the kick off along with the stomach issues and onset of SVT.

Just never ever thought I would be having to deal with all of this.

You mentioned that you thought I am still going through effects of the Bos but it has been 15 months since I stopped

      Just want my AVNRT fixed............

      Sorry.

I thought that it was all in 2017.

If you have quit BBs in 2016, then your withdrawal from them is done.

You are currently taking some Benzo and AD.

If you have been reading some other topics here, you could have seen that elevated heart rate, high blood presssure, dizziness, nausea, random pain, feeling ill, and huge anxiety are the most common symptoms of BB's withdrawal (Bisoprolol).

So, you surely had some problems due to BB's withdrawal when you were scheduled for your 1st ablation.

That withdrawal was over in let's say 2-3-4 Months.

Other problems after that are either your original Spvt disease, or a normal anxiety.

A lot of us have a normal anxiety since we are scared of an original disease.

And then it grows even more when we experience strange side effects from drugs and from a withdrawal and yet majority of docs don't know too much about a withdrawal.

So, if you have been taking Benzo and AD for more than year now, you should wean off slowly.

I don't have an experience with AD meds, but quitting them can probably also add some additional anxiety.

But I see that you haven't been lowering your dose of Clonazepam, right?

But ok, you will probably lower it later during this process.

Be ready to experience some extra anxiety, elevated HR, panic attacks, strange feelings etc.

But once a withdrawal from all drugs will be over, you should feel somewhat normal again, I hope, the same as before drugs.

      Thank you so much Bob

Yes The Clon has stayed at the same dose as per my doctor.  In the beginning I was taking .25 mg x2 daily.  That started June /16. But when the trazadone was started Nov/16, I was told to to decrease the Clon  to .25mg daily.  I guess that is alot to just stop at one time even though the traz was introduced.

I then stayed on the .25mg  Clon until  March/17 with 75 mg of trazadone.

Then the weaning started March 13/17

Clon dropped to .125 mg       Trazadone      75 mg

Todate   I am on     Clon    .125 mg  Clon             Trazdone          8 mg  (approx)

So since the weaning started there has been 1 drop of Clon   but many of the Trazadone.

Has not been a  good journey...........

Seeing what I have gone through with this weaning process, I   now realize that the abrupt stop with the Biso back in may/16 was infact withdrawl

Such a mess up ever going on this crap

When you will try to wean off from benzo, also please cut the doses in 1/2, then 1/4 and 1/8 if needed.

And in the end, when you will be at the lowest possible dose, start to take a drug once in 2 days for 2 weeks, then once in 3 days for 2 weeks and then quit.

It will be easier that way because Benzos will also cause some anxiety and elevated heart rate while weaning off.

I was recently diagnosed with high blood pressure...which until Covid was not an issue. many stress factors have occurred since March which induced palpitations. I've run the battery of tests and still have to undergo a nuclear stress test.

In the meantime a cardiologist arbitrarily prescribed Bisoprolol 5 mg per day.

Oh my word the side effects were terrible..congestion..fatigue..insomnia.. diarrhea....runny nose...coughing...sore throat and dizziness.

I tolerated it for a few days then decided that was enough. stopped it on the 5 th day.. I placed several calls to the doctor but he has yet to return my calls.

I have adjusted my diet and included a magnesium supplement to try to regulate the rhythm until the tests are complete and if no heart disease or arterial blockage are detected, then strict healthy diet, exercise, adequate sleep and water will be my go to.

I lost 2 husbands and I am convinced they were over medicated. I sure as hell won't let that happen to me.

    Good luck.

hello, is anyone still active on this forum? i plan on stopping Bisoprolol soon. as i do not want to rely on this medication forever.

    i am on 5mg. 2.5 morning and 2.5 night.

i have inappropriate sinus tachycardia but its not too severe.

before i started Bisoprolol in January my resting heart rate was between 90-101. whilst on Bisoprolol my Resting HR is 80. a couple of weeks ago i stopped taking it (weaning off over a couple weeks)

my heart rate has never been so high! i thought i was going to die and couldn't stop shaking with fear.

am i going to have to stay on this forever? i feel hopeless and don't know what to do 😦
