Tarsal tunnel syndrome

Hello I have tarsal tunnel syndrome which was diagnosed by a nerve conduction test. I go back to see my foot and ankle surgeon in three weeks

Does anyone else have this syndrome? If so how was it treated. So far all i know is mine is coursed by bruising and possibly a fracture of an old injury.

The stabbing pain i get is at times is unbearable lasts only for a few seconds its like some one has stabbed me in the foot with a hot sharp blade and electrocuted at the same time. Also have tingling in my feet muscle spasms leading up to my knee all the time but more noticeable with online in bed at night. Any one have this? thank you

    Hi all,

I had a MRI check on my left ankle which turned out I didn't have PF or TTS!

During the last 3 years, I spent 2.5 years on treatments of PF and 6 months on TTS with all kinds of conservative treatments, including shockwave, injections, stretches, massage etc. Now, I know they were all wrong!

The symptoms caused by a muscle which somehow got hurt and the fluits from oedema compress some nerves in the foot, which cause the numbness, pain, burning, tingling etc all over my foot, ankle and lower leg.

I wrote down all those symptoms in detail with pictures which impressed my doctors. I wonder if anyone has the same symptoms to mine. Anybody would like to keep in touch somewhere else and share our experience in dealing with the pain? Please get back to me.

    Cheers,

    Jon

Hi Jon, I have been suffering with this also And have tried injections, orthotics, massage, acvupuncture, , anti  inflammatories, and physical therapy. Everything helps a little but I am not convinced that surgery is the answer if nothing shows on the mri or nerve conduction test. Mine showed nothing except an ultrasound showed compression of the nerve. The physical therapist seems to think the nerve compression is due to inflammation and once you can get that down the nerve symptoms should go away, as most of mine have. I still have pain when walking but it is improving. It’s a long road  and so difficult to figure out.  I’m praying for healing every day. I hope you are better.

HI Dena34441 and Jon77189  - have you found any relief?  My problem seems most similar to yours.  I had MRI that showed inflammation and edema, and a NCV that showed issues in the tarsal area.  I had custom orthotics made, I thought they were helping, but not so sure now.  I take lots of Aleve.  I wanted to try Lyrica but my podiatrist said that was really bad medicine to take.  I found some cream called Penetrex online thats helped a tad.  I also tried injections and steroid pack at one point, didnt really help long term.  I;m going to talk to the doctor about trying MLS laser therapy or electronic wave.  I'll let you know of any progress that may/may not make.

Hi, I’m still trying to figure out what to do besides surgery. Right now I’m wearing the orthotics in my shoes, and I take Advil some days. I use heat or ice at night, mainly ice. I’ve started having some tingling along the inner ankle  and arch of foot and up into my calf so I’m not sure What that means. The pain is better though. The tingling is worse. I wish I knew if surgery would help. I’m diabetic and not sure surger is my best option. It’s nice to help each other.

I just went through the surgery 3 weeks ago, so far it seems to have worked well other than I'm not healing right at the wound. The surgeon told me I won't really know till about my 10th week of recovery if the surgery was a success, so I'll make sure I comeback and fill you all in on the progress. Let me add that I was warned the surgery could make things worse if it doesn't go as planned, let's hope that is not the case for me 😁

      Hi Jon,

Sounds like what I'm suspecting is going on with me. Nerve conduction test is not showing TTS, but that's what the docs "think" it may be. So, what was suggested for your recovery?

Hi Chris, thanks so much for letting us know about the surgery. I hope it is successful for you. Please keep me informed as to how it goes. Where did you do the surgery if you don’t mind me asking. Are you in a lot of pain? Also, can you tell me if you were having tingling along the inside of ankle and calf? Thanks and take it easy!

Thanks for the update.  Did you have an actual mass (tumor, etc) to be removed or was it rather a "release" kind of surgery?  I ask because I don't have an actual mass compressing my nerve, yet I still have tarsal tunnel.  Hope you benefit from the surgery and keep us in the loop.  I'm hoping to not get to that point but most of what I've tried provides just a small benefit.  I'm going back for a follow up next week with my podiatrist so I'll let you all know how it goes to see if there is anything I can share that will help us all . smile

So the surgeon went in the foot to perform the said release, while in the foot he took notice to some severe scar tissue, he decided since we had already agreed that it would be a release with the possibility of an exploratory surgery of the tendon and ligaments of the foot and ankle to see if there was anything going on from those areas that may have been causing the foot to have such an issue, well he found some pretty serious scar tissue and he removed it that best he could. For now it's just a wait game to see of the whole procedure was a success. About your mass question, I had previously injured the foot and ankle at work resulting in 3 surgeries, I was diagnosed with tarsal tunnel of the left foot after my first surgery. My most recent surgeon is hoping the hardware in my heel ( 2 screws) were causing the compression of my nerve, let's hope that's all it was .

I have been diagnosed with TTS a few months ago after over a year of dealing with pain in my left and right foot, can't walk longing than 10 minutes at a time without crushing pains in my feet. I have seen 2 specialist surgeons that have both said to stay away from TTSR, 90% of patients that get the procedure done experience major increase of pain and never recover fully. They recommend injections , the injections are junk and don't work for nothing .... My Dr. Has put me on 15 mg oxy along with Lyrica at bedtime for the pains, Well the oxy works wonders and gets me through the day for the most pain ,with pain but much less pain. So far the Lyrica is helping me stay sleeping at nights, was waking up screaming in pain at 2am like clock work every night with Sharpe knife like pain in the tips of 4 toes. Though the pain only came at 2am like and went away in about 20 minutes it was still insane to he woken up like that every night . I hope someone has better responses than myself , like there's a rainbow at the end of my road , but my latest Dr. From the Rothman institute told me Chris, let's face the facts here, you're probably never going to get better but I'm going to try anything and everything to help you. I really hope this next surgery 24 June helps me if not I'm going to feel defeated.... Please feel free to contact me anytime to chat if it helps anyone .....

I’m on a 2 month waiting list to see a neurologist!!! But I’ve already had lots of bloods done and a nerve conduction test in the past!!!! Everything showed fine!!! Sorry to hear your still struggling to Chris, whatever I have definitely gets better with rest but with working, it’s just impossible!!! 2 days at the weekend just doesn’t touch it!!! Hi Chris

So sorry to hear about your suffering. You certainly are not alone.

Must be coming up to 14 yrs now since being diagnosed with tarsal tunnel syndrome.

But I've had recent MRI scans that's show no compression but I do have in my right foot osteoarthritis. But I am still not really getting any answers. My neurologist says it's a multitude of health issues I have that cause it.

And there is not any operation that will help, so it's medication route.

I've been on pregabalin, gabapentin none helped. I am on 50mg of Amitriptyline and lidocaine patches, diazepam when needed and Oramorph. The diazepam and Oramorph I really restrict myself and only take at screaming point because of their addictive behaviour.

I had a Mri scan of my back which showed osteoarthritis which again neurologist says is part of the problem also.

It's all left me rather confused. But.... If used regularly the lidocaine patches have helped alot and having specially made shoes, tis has made a big difference. In the UK the orthotic service provides the shoes for free under the NHS.

I strongly advise to you all who are reading this to get properly fitted shoes, it makes all the difference.

Good luck with your op I really hope it helps. People just do not understand the excruciating pain we suffer.

In the early years before medication and orthotics shoes, I got close to cutting my foot off. Thats how bad this pain can be.

Keep me posted. And anyone else who suffers such agonising pain.
