Ted stockings

Hi

can I ask how long all you hippies: I  have had to wear ted stockings.

I have been told 6 weeks. I am now into week 5 and they are driving me nuts. The pain sometimes thro them being tight is bad at times. I ended cutting a pair off the other night as I had had enough. X

Hi Gaynor! Yes these wonderful Ted stockings drove me nuts too! But hey your nearly there! At 5weeks! I also had blood thinning jabs into tummy each day with district nurse! I was black and blue! I will be 11 weeks post op on Monday! Regards Amanda

I have only been given rivaroxaban and been told when in bed lying flat on back to do ankle exercises as this helps the circulation and have plenty of walks every couple of hours

I was in the same hospital as Mic.  We were not given stockings to wear, we had ankle pumps on for 24 hours and were given two blood thinner injections and I was sent home with aspirin to take for 6 weeks.  So take them off if they are hurting or irritating you.  You are now into week 5, so just another week should not make much difference.

Many thanks for all your replies

I have been  giving myself nightly injections

I really feel  after reading all your replies I will be safe to take the things off as they are really getting on my nerves.

its it strange how there are so many different methods used by surgeons you would think there would be a uniformed method for us all to follow. No wonder there are so many conflicting stories

thank you all so much for replying to me and helping me reach my decision xxxx

    Hi Gaynor

I was same as you, was told to wear them for 6 weeks and take blood thinning tables for 4 weeks.  Came to week 5 and I just took the Teds off.  I am now nearly week 6.

I would honestly say if you have kept them on for 5 weeks same as me, then just take them off and be comfortable.

    Regards

Hi Gaynor, I was told 6 weeks too but I think I lasted 2 weeks. I had no swelling and was very mobile by then. You have done really well to persist with them for so long. X

Hi Gaynor, I was told 6 weeks also - am only 10days post op today and have been getting out and about, so they re not very glamorous! My daughter had afternoon tea this afternoon to celebrate the forthcoming birth of her baby boy, miso I actually left them off after my shower. I am taking injections for 6 weeks too, so I do not think I will wear them again - plus they are an absolute nightmare to get on and off!! As long as you are keeping mobile and doing the excercises, I think we should be ok - unless of course you have a history of DVT??

Hope ps this helps, but it is only my opinion .

take care and here's to a speedy recovery.

So, confusing, is there no evidence based 'best practice' in UK. should be surely?!

Hi mic, I am sure there is evidence - based peer- reviewed evidence to support or refute the use of ted stockings post-operatively. However I do think that every consultant has their own opinions on this, and they use them to stamp their own authority on their practice. In my area there are two big NHS trusts with many consultants specialising in hips, knees, Eric, but it would seem that they all have there own criteria for post-op risk assessment for prevention of DVT! It must be really difficult if someone lives alone and has no one to help get them on and off, and that's where common sense should play a part? What you think?

Hello Christine I think tthe post op assessment alerts surgeosn to some who are more likely to get a DVT.  Smoking, overweight are 2 of the primary factors and of course inherited blood factor, also high cholestrol.   This may explain why some have the stockings and why some have to have the injections for 4 weeks

I have left my TEDs off today.  Am 18 days post op and do wonder if I am taking a chance.  I had a pulmonary embolism a coupld of years ago and am a bit worried but I keep moving about.  I will probably have them put back on tonight!

I agree with you on everything. It is the surgeons practise.

Because I am a size 10, don't smoke or drink. Don't have any health related issues. So I truly feel it's what they choose for all their patients..

I live alone and have to wait till someone calls in to help me. So only get relief when I have a visitor, it's been a nightmare.

time for them to come off

      many thanks x

      Dear Christine

      Good discussion this....

Well...I've taught evidence based medicine to undergrads at uni for 10 years plus...so am kinda passionate about this....

So yes to some individual flexibility on gender, circs, medical history or age. But no to this impossible quagmire of consultants doing their own thing. Drug therapy has NICE guidelines clearly setting the scene for good practice, as surely should surgery. It's not just stockings it's physio advice etc too. Too many prima Donna methinks and needs bringing to order!

      Hey

i have loved the discussions my subject has started,

so interesting all the different replies .. Some the same and a lot very different. So strange isn't it. Doesn't really help anyone of us. Because I think a lot of us are all very similar and we are all treated so differently

      Many thanks
