Teeth

one of my crowns broke and I saw my Dentist she decided to take an exray and said I needed a consultation with a Top dentist. I went yesterday and I have bone loss and infections and decay in my gums. Nothing to do with my oral hygiene which she said was very good. But possibly down to pred. I have to have two teeth removed and my implant may have to come out too and then see a specialists for gums. I Have always had my 6 month check ups.

any one else had this..

Are you also on a bisphosphonate for "bone protection"?

Has it always been the same dentist? My cousin has never been on pred but last year was told she had very advanced gum disease and that was why her teeth were loose. It had been going on for years but while two dentists had noticed it they had never mentioned it to her or recommended any measures to be taken - until it was too late. "We monitored it" is like saying I saw the floor was flooded but I didn't turn off the tap! She has been to the dentist every 6 months and had all her hygienist appointment - fat lot of good it did her. She is suing with a very good case ...

I was prescribed Alendronic Acid as a preventative but as my Dexa Scan results were very good and having read about alendronic I decided not to take it. I take a concoction of medication as I also have  Fib😩The results on my teeth came out of the blue I had no idea. I haven,t had bleeding gums, and I am so angry that neither the dentist or the hygienist  picked this up 6 months ago . I have been With same Practice for many years but during the last. 7 years I have had 2 changes of dentist.

That's what happened to her, no signs she'd seen at all but the pockets were there and the dentists had noted them. Just never told her about it until she went with the loose teeth and the latest said "it's because of your periodontal disease". What periodontal disease??????? None of them had made any attempt to avoid it progressing and now it is a bit late.

She is having some radical treatment with a dentist in Harley Street and I think it is having some effect - and should be paid for by the incompetents...

Last year I noticed my lower teeth seemed to have shifted, so that teeth once mostly straight are now a bit crooked.  I asked about it and was told this often happens as we age. rolleyes  However after I started taking my extra calcium supplements and doing other things to help my bones, owing to a diagnosis of low bone mass after starting pred, I noticed the teeth seemed to firm up again.  I'm sorry I don't remember whether I first noticed this before or after pred, but it was certainly significant enough by the time I'd been on pred for a few months for me to think to ask about it.  I now suffer from toothache caused, I'm told, by gums receding, a natural aging thing speeded up by pred.

Seeing specialists seems to be a bit hit or miss, doesn't it?  One former dentist used to check my mouth carefully for signs of disease, like cancer.  Now I'm lucky if the current bloke does more than listen to the hygienist's observations and give me a 60 second visual check of the teeth only.

Anhaga what kind of calcium supplements are you taking.I have a

similar situation going on as Macas02 does.I have upper crowns

both sides and for the last couple years have been monitored and told

I have bone loss.I was recently put on a mouth rinse called Periguard

by Colgate. But my damage was due to years of not having proper

dental care through regular cleanings and check ups(no insurance)

anyway I am interested in doing all I can now to slow progression

of periodontal disease and aging.I'm in my early fifties and would like

to keep my natural teeth but if I ever lost the crowns then that's it

for me I'm going to falsies lol

I went to an organics food store we have, which also sells supplements and got advice there.  The kind I have includes most of the things you need for good bone health, including vitamin K2.  Has to be taken three times a day for full dosage, so you don't get too much at one time, improves absorption.  Not to be taken with pred, of course, nor iron.  As I've had to take iron twice a day, and pred, this has made my days one long string of supplement breaks.  Which reminds me, time for second iron of the day!

During the 10 years we lived in Germany my husband never went to the dentist - 15 years in total in fact! Then there was a change in entitlement in the UK so I made him register with a dentist - there was nothing at all to be done. I've had almost nothing done in the last 20 years either - and I didn't go every few months either. I had a wisdom tooth removed a couple of years ago and needed a ceramic inlay earlier this year - a bit of tooth broke and since it was mainly filling there wasn't much choice. That cost a small fortune - but at the time the dentist commented on how good my teeth were. So you don't have to be there every five minutes to avoid needing work.

I'm sure very little sugar and, above all, having had gold fillings done when we were students made the difference. We both acted as subjects for dental students who, in those days had to practise making gold inlays and crowns. Would never have bothered otherwise - but the gold acts as an antibacterial agent!

Eileen that is awesome you and your husband could go all those

years without needing dental work.I have been one of the

unfortunate ones that since childhood has needed a dentist.

I do have 1 gold crown woo hoo and am glad I decided on doing

I agree on the sugar bit,it does effect the teeth

I had loads of fillings as a child - awful dentist really! It all changed when I went to university and went to the Dental School to get my teeth straightened. They also did the gold work - and since then, very little besides replacing old fillings. And I only clean my teeth once a day.

Too much interference probably isn't a good thing...

Yep I did to I had 13 fillings when I was around 11.I know we all

deal with these things differently. That's great you were able to

have the Dental School.I admit I brush once or twice a day,it

really depends on my fibro and on how I feel that day

Where do you live?  I'm in Canada and the supplement is made in Canada, Quebec I think.  I'll private message link to their website in case there's enough info there for you to figure out what you should look for where you are.  There are so many different kinds, and so many different ideas about what is good, I feel I don't want to make specific recommendations as I have no training in this.

Electric toothbrush! The best b'day present I gave myself after PMR struck! Does it properly without struggling with achy arms!

I had a gold crown for a while but the tooth was cracked and eventually had to come out. Turned out it was a molar with only one root, so it looks like a fang, I kept it for its curiosity value but now that I've been reading this I'm wishing I still had a bit of gold in my mouth.
