Terbinafine will taste return

Posted , 44 users are following.

Have been on 250mg for 5 weeks for skin infection. Have now lost all sense of taste and miserable as choosing not to eat as dull and boring. I am choosing to stop medication now as nothing is worse than this and i fly on holiday tomorrow. Does anyone know if my taste will return to normal and how long this may take? 😞

    Hi Chaps,

It's back! My taste returned last Sunday, but I wanted to check that it was not a flash in the pan before I posted.

It's been 13 weeks and whilst my taste began to come back a couple of weeks ago, the ability to taste sweet things has taken a couple more weeks. If anything now I feel my taste for sweet things has heightened - I'm assuming that will regularise over the coming week or so.

For those of you still suffering this horrible so-called side-effect keep eating what you can. I know it's difficult and there were times when I felt totally depressed because I didn't want to eat (or drink) as food and liquids just tasted so terrible. I have lost weight because of this problem and now need to get back to eating healthily to put it back on.

I do believe doctors need to do more research before they prescribe this medication and I also believe the pharmaceutical companies producing it need to revisit their patient leaflets as, I believe, the information contained within them is misleading. The leaflets will suggest that (1) the possibility of developing this side-effect will be minimal and (2) what they call 'taste disturbance' will disappear as soon as the medication is stopped. Both are at inaccurate. My case and that of others is that once you have this loss of taste it can last a minimum of eight weeks (mine 13 weeks!) before you fully regain it - that's not minimal. To call this problem a taste disturbance is also grossly wrong. When it happens it brings with it a host of other problems, loss of interest in food, loss of interest in eating and drinking, medical problems associated with not eating and drinking enough, relationship issues and depression, to mention a few. These are not conditions to be treated lightly - especially in people who may already have physical or mental problems.

My GP had no knowledge of this side-effect and although he said he would stop prescribing it, there will be other doctors out there who will prescribe it, whether through a lack of knowledge of the side-effect or because they feel the online drug advice suggests minimal risk. I daresay, too, there will be people who will have used this drug without experiencing this side-effect and will wonder what all the fuss is about. They have been lucky and I am pleased for them. However, my concern is for the people who have and will suffer this problem and the horrible way it impinges on their lives.

In light of the horrid situation this drug can bring on, and the fact people will not know until around 6 weeks in whether or not they will be affected, by which time it's too late to do anything about it, Terbinafine needs new medical tests and an updating of the patient advice information. Then and only then can people make an informed decision about whether to go forward with the use of this drug. And it may be to some that the possibility of prolonged taste loss is something which they are prepared to accept in order to deal with the fungal infection for which this drug is prescribed. But at least they will have made an informed choice which is not the current situation - because no one is informing them.

So, in summary, there is light at the end of this dark tunnel - just keep eating and drinking even though you may not feel like it. Your taste will return and you will enjoy food and drink again.

    Cheers,

    John

Thank you to everyone who has posted on this site. I started taking Lamisil (Terbinafin 250g) in March for a toenail infection. I live in the UAE and it is freely available across the counter. Before buying it, I read the adverse effects and it and refers to 'Dysgeusia and Ageusia as being 'uncommon' side-effects and that the taste 'usually returns to normal following withdrawal of treatment.' It doesn't say how long and I must admit that I initially missed this adverse effect notification.

I was 10 weeks into the treatment before I realised the cause of everything tasting terrible could be the fault of Lamisil. I stopped taking it immediately after reading various online reports about it affecting taste. The taste of salt in my mouth is there all the time now and, as you all agree, sweet things taste disgusting. Since I need to lose weight, I don't feel too bad about that aspect :-) My greatest fear, however, was that my taste may not return, but on reading all of your experiences, I am so relieved that - hopefully - it will. I love food and to lose the taste of it is the loss of one of life's great pleasures!

I stopped taking the drug last Tuesday, 19th May, so I will wait for a few months to see what happens.

Thank you all so much for taking the time to record all this and in the process reassure me. I do think more people need to be aware of this horrible side-effect and posts such as yours are helping to get that message across.

      Thanks

      Hi Katy,

So sorry to read that you have been caught in this taste trap.

Your taste will return in full I'm sure. I had the same nagging doubt about my situation, but it did finally re-appear. In my case the seawater and cardboard effect was with me for about 10 weeks after I stopped taking the tablet, and, then, spicy foods began to register. A couple of weeks of that and other tastes came back. Finally chocolate, Mocha and sweet things. About 13 weeks in all for the complete return.

I'm amazed that the drug can be purchased over the counter. It might be an idea to make the pharmacist / store aware of the problems encountered by others with this drug. The biggest problem is people don't know until it's too late as to whether they will be affected. Sites like this are brilliant to re-assure people, but it's generally the case that people don't seek out this information until they have the problem. So it relies upon word-of-mouth by those affected as a warning to others.

I also believe the patient information is misleading in the warning about taste loss. As you have identified, it makes it sound like an insignificant side-effect which will go away as soon as the tablets are stopped. That isn't the case.

Keep eating and drinking even though it's not terribly pleasant. It will get better.

      Very best wishes,

      John

It's quite weird really; in Dubai they are very strict about certain drugs. You can't get codeine, or valium, and poppy seeds are banned! But you can get all sorts of other stuff over the counter.

Anyway, thank you for that reassurance, John.

I so appreciated reading your post. Although now at 21/2 months post Lamisil. My taste is much better... Which of course, improves appetite. Pastries are still overly sweet to me... So I still have a ways to go!

I agree, I do NOT feel that the literature accurately represents what so many of us have been through.

Im thinking That this 'horrific med.' is prescribed in many countries. Not sure of this, but I don't want anyone else experiencing 'the side effects.'

Once again, thank you for your detailed and articulate & 'right on' posting.

Great thorough response John.., thank you!! You've spoken for many of us who took this. 👍🏼

      Hi Katy:

How long did it take to get your taste back? I'm just assuming you did!  And I'm trying to follow up with everyone who hasn't updated their situation in this thread.  I've been coping with taste loss for the same reason (Lamsil 250 for five weeks) in April/May, 2017.  It's only been two weeks since I quit the medication after noticing the change five weeks into the process so I may have awhile to go.  I mainly survive on cold and healthy shakes/smoothies and hot soup or hot drinks.  I can't taste these items very well but the hot/cold sensation helps me get it down.  I do find that I'm hungerier than I use to be. Probably because I haven't been eating that much.  Also, I'm worried that because I'm a cancer survivor and went through four rounds of chemo (10 years ago) with taste alteration each time, that this could somehow effect the current situation.  I've also been dealing with an asthma flare-up for the last week or so which seems like it may be interfering with taste too.  Any information will be appreciated as I've yet to find anyone who I know personally who has gone through this.  Thanks!

    Hi!

I am so relieved (sorry) that I'm not going thru this alone! This is truly one of the yuckiest expetiences... I've ever had, in terms of medications.

I am so grateful to Mirving and John for sharing your experiences with me.

Each night I dread dread dread taking that pill! I'm now eating kids meals but only if I'm able to have a tiny Tatars of 'whatever' first.

I find that mashed potatoes, Mac & cheese/not goopy, some fruits and fried chicken are ok in small portions for me. I am NOT a picky eater, and this is s horrible way to take off my extra 15lbs.

I will call for an appointment tomorrow with my Dr.

I am now 2 months into this horrible foul tasting/ drug..,

My husband took this med, and although it tasted bad to him, it did not wipe out his appetite. Actually, I'm always hungry because so few foods 'hit me right.' I did have salmon & fried rice today & ate all of my salmonsmile.

Thank you to all who have posted on their negative side effects of this drug.

Darn, all I wanted was healthy looking toenails!

With sincere hope that all of you are able to enjoy

Food again. Sure has put a new 'spin' on diets for me!!

    Dear mirving

I surely hope your eating is back to normal!!

I had considered waiting to see my GP this week... After 9 weeks on Lamisil, I find more & more foods disgusting to even see, let alone taste.

Today I made the decision to STOP this 'drug.'!! I will still follow through & be sure my GP knows how extremely adverse this drug can be. Perhaps only <2% will experience this, but when 'you are' included in that 2%... that's one too many!!

good luck to all taking this drug... never again!

    can't wait to taste food with 'it's normal texture & taste once again!! will="" experience="" this,="" but="" when="" 'you="" are'="" included="" in="" that="" 2%...="" that's="" one="" too="" many!!="" good="" luck="" to="" all="" taking="" this="" drug...="" never="" again!="" can't="" wait="" to="" taste="" food="" with="" 'it's="" normal="" texture="" &="" taste="" once="" again!!="">

good luck to all taking this drug... never again!

can't wait to taste food with 'it's normal texture & taste once again!! >

I have taken this toe fungal medication for 12 weeks. when I finished that round of antibiotics she had me go another round of this antibiotics for 12 weeks. During the first round I really didn't know this much of a change in my taste as I was on a low-calorie very strict cleanse and could not have sugar and oils and such...so I really didn't notice the change. When I started my second round of antibiotics I was off the cleanse and I noticed that I could not taste salt ..sugar and everything was very very bland. I removed myself off of the fungus medication. it has been about a week and I have noticed that I still cannot taste anything. I miss being able to enjoy my food. With my cleanse it was very strict and I had to go without quite a bit so now that I can eat what I want now I can't enjoy it.

It's frustrating...also I've noticed I can taste the flavor and smell fine..just miss the salty..sweet...sour aspects of the food....

Hope this returns soon as it really makes it hard to eat.

Hi there. I am a male from Turkey and I am 20 years old. I have suffered by that side effect aswell, it is really devastating. But I am happily reporting that my taste returned quite a bit. Like %50 in my opinion. It took 1 month for that to return that much so. But i really can't remember how i used to taste food, that's really weird for me. It is like somethinf about with my brain and that's scary. Usually if its about brain, it is mostly irreversible.

I have read on the internet that taste loss can be permament? On wikipedia and another site. Oh god. I got so anxious and upset. I quit taking this drug immediately.

I actually want to sue those who make this drug get into pharmacies, and who made it be available in the first place with such dangerous side effects. But I don't know how those things work much. It writes on prospectus as side effect, but doesn't include it can be permament, but it also says that one can lose smell permamently or temporary.

It doesn't say on prospectus that taste loss can be permament. But in a few sites it says that can be permament.

And by the way, how am I going to know if my taste returns by %100? I really don't remember how I used to taste food when i lost my taste.

      Hello!!

Well, as I've stated in earlier messages, my taste has returned at about 85%. It's rather strange because foods I used to enjoy aren't that tasty to me anymore. That said, it appears I still like healthy foods, but most sweets have lost their appeal. This whole thing with this fungal medication side effects is rather odd!!

Who knows if I will ever enjoy peanut butter cookies again. Good luck on getting your taste buds back to 100% once again! You were smart getting off the fungal medication that quickly!

      & hello from California! smile

I've taken terbinafine for 4 weeks and when I realized I had my taste lost I stopped immediately. Now I'm going through my 3rd week off this medication and I can say I taste about 20-30% of the food. It's getting better but it's still reduced. As I didn't took it for a long period and I'm only 19 years old I hope I get recovered sooner. I'm very thin so I cannot lose any weight otherwise it can become too serious. I try to eat everything I can.

I'm looking forward to getting back on my eating routine again.

Thank you all for your information.

    I'll keep you updated.

      Good to hear Matt!

I was on it 8 weeks, as I had said before, so you 'got smart' a lot faster than I did!!

Never again will I take this horrible medication!! Dr.'s definitely don't seem to understand how negatively this drug has affected so many of us!!

Here's to your taste buds & appetite being 100% ASAP!!

Hey Marlene and guys... I'm happy to tell you my taste has finally returned!! Wow... It took me 4 weeks without any taste and I got very sad... I did my best in order not to lose weight because I'm very thin. I tried to eat only salty food, which at least I had the pleasure to enjoy the texture (because the taste was impossible). For example: Cassava Cheese Puffs (typical food here in Brazil), french fries, curry, soup and vegetables. Also bread I needed to eat to keep my weight. High calorie food was extremely important in my case. Sweet is a little wierd but I don't care. I know it's gonna fully come back soon.

The fact it took me "only" 4 weeks is because I'm 19 years old, thin and I play sports all the time. So my methabolism helped me a lot!!

I thank you all for the comments. It helped me a lot!!

I'll be here if anyone else needs me!

Hi Marlene,  Well it's been 15 weeks and I can finally eat again.  I had and enjoyed chocolate pie with meringue for the first time in over 3 months and cokes also.  Never will I take my taste for granted again.  I bet I never take another medication without checking out what patients have to say ever again.  Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to each and every one.

So very happy to hear that!! Between that terrible med for my toenail fungus and my back surgery meds I started after back surgery in October, I am down 30 lbs!

Gratefully, my appetite is starting to gradually return after a very rough year!

      Thank goodness for you!!

Merry Chtustmas Linda and a blessed New Year to you and yours!!!

Sorry to hear that. I lost 21 pounds and really do not want to get it back.  Everything taste so good I want to eat everything but have to be careful as I don't need the weight back on.  Need to start going to a gym but that is so hard to get in the habit of doing.  Need to tighten up what I have left and perhaps lose a few more pounds if I can. If you don't need to lose weight I hope you have no trouble putting it back on.

      Thank you Linda!!

Unfortunately I am now 'skinny' not a good look!! 😟

I needed to lose maybe 12 lbs not 30!!

I know what you mean... I need to tighten up, but I am months away from full recovery from back surgery!!

      You take care!! 😉
