Posted , 44 users are following.

Have been on 250mg for 5 weeks for skin infection. Have now lost all sense of taste and miserable as choosing not to eat as dull and boring. I am choosing to stop medication now as nothing is worse than this and i fly on holiday tomorrow. Does anyone know if my taste will return to normal and how long this may take? 😞

Hi there everyone on this thread. I was recently perscribed Terbinafine for a nail infection mid Feburary 2016. I now have the taste loss, it has been over a week. I wish I had read this before taking it! At first my taste went dull and exactly what you said, lovely smelling food tasting like bad cardboard or off cream. I stopped taking the medication and slowly I am regaining hints of flavour, it's totally rubbish. Nothing is worth this. I am glad to see that it seems not to be perminant. Did your taste return eventually? I'm going to go to the doctor tomorrow and tell her to find and alternative for future patients. I'm glad to have read this thread and know that it is not something more serious like other websites are associating taste loss to some scary illnesses.

I think I will report the drug to Yellow Card also.

    Kind Regards

    Martin

      Hi Martin,

So glad you're already regaining hints of flavours, that's a good sign. Some people (myself included) had no taste of anything (other than cardboard and seawater) for between eight and twelve weeks.

Unfortunately, most doctors don't seem to be aware of the so-called 'side-effect' of this drug.

Reporting it to Yellow Card is a good idea. I did that and I think it helps to build a picture of what problems like this drug can cause.

I hope your full taste returns soon. Just keep eating and drinking. Often the tendency is not to do either, as the taste is so abhorent - and that's not good for us.

      Best wishes,

      John

      Hi Martin

Unfortunately I had to have invasive back surgery soon after stopping this disgusting medication-- (was on it 8 weeks).

My desire to eat post op has been a real problem for me! I have no clue 'why' my appetite has been so suppressed. I can't be sure if I am still having some residual effects from the Terbinafine, or if what I'm experiencing now-- In terms of 'eating difficulties'--is mainly caused by my surgery and associated medications.

From having followed this thread last year, it appears that 'taste' appears to have returned to others posting on this site.

      Good luck to you!

      Hi Martin,

I'm 20 years old and I lost my taste buds after 5 weeks taking it!!

Fortunately, after 3 weeks I had 50% of my taste back. And then you can start eating normal again!

Here's my tip: Try to eat food that gives you at least pleasure to feel it in your mouth. Soup, vegetables, SAUCE, Spicy food hmmm very important. Sugar is the last one to come back so avoid soda and sweets. Eat fruits as dessert and orange, lemon juice instead of soda.

Keep calm that it DOES return. You just have to be pacient and be creative like a real CHEF!!

Don't forget to keep us updated!!

      Bye for now

      Matt

Many thanks to John, Marlena, and Matt for your replies. I feel more confident and optimistic about regaining my taste.

Marlena that sounds so unfair and I really hope you are feeling better and on a speedy road to recovery, Terbinafine is just horrible.

John yes I am going to add my experience to Yellow card, and I keep the food going in although I have lost a bit of weight, no harm there. Tastes are coming coming back little by little, I'm trying to maintain a healthy diet.

Matt yes man I love too cook, the hot spicy food, noodles, rice has been number one on the list recently. I am also finding that juicing ginger, apples, lemon, lime, cucumber and celery has been very pleasent. Missing salt and sugar yes, I look forward to there return and will certainly appreciate tasteing food a whole lot more.

Cheers for the positivity a great day to all!!

Hi I stopped taking terbinafine three weeks ago due to taste loss, nausea and headaches, does anyone know how long these symptoms will last?

UK here. I took Dacktarin cream for a foot itch. After two days I lost my taste buds. I compained to Doctor who gave me the Dacktarin and told him that I had lost to tp ski off my tongue resulting in complete loss of taste and that my lips were inflamed and my teeth were loose. He gave my Dacktarin gell to put into my mouth! This chased the swelling down to my throat leaving me with a weakened throat and reflux. Stopped taking this medicine! I expect to get my taste budsback in six to twenty four months. Check with your "FDA" inthink that is who banned your drug in the USA.

I was on terbinafine for a month, finished the course and missed a month. Now I'm back on it again nearly finished my course and I can't taste anything. Got to got back to doctors as she said I got to take if for three months, don't think I could cope with this feeling not able to taste food. What should I do?

I was on this medication for 6 weeks. It totally messed up my taste buds. No one can direct you as what to do. I chose to stop taking it and my taste eventually returned. It's been nearly 2 years since I was on it, but I'll never forget that terrible experience. Doctors don't seem to be aware of the 'taste difficulties' this causes for so many of us. My husband has taken it and other than the 'bitter taste of the med itself', had no problems with it otherwise.

Good luck ... Whatever your decision is. But it's pretty certain that in time your taste of food will return.

Read every thread in this post.

23 yo, female, in the U.S was prescribed this medication almost a month ago and I am in the stages of taste-loss. Everything taste bitter, even when i don't eat or drink anything, that bitter taste remains in my mouth. I eat chicken noodle soup and thats about all i can stomach, and forget about carbonated anything. Those just taste terrible. I have to drink juice or gatorades. Mostly gatorades. I am suppose to take this prescription for another 2 months. I want to push through cause i want to ensure it works. But i don't know if i should, knowing that it only gets worst. I suspected the terbinafine was the cause of this, but this post obviously confirms it.

Hi Mirving and all other sufferers...

I have been experiencing the most miserable 3 weeks of my life having been taking Terbinafine for 6 weeks.

    F. I was on a big holiday and the loss of taste completely ruined my trip by the end. I was so relieved to find this website and read your experiences.. I have already lost 5 pounds and feel permanently hungry but everything tastes so bad that I can't eat much. I am nearly 60 years old and weigh less than I did when I was 20.. not a great look!! The only thing that tastes nearly the same is porridge. I was horrified to read how long it has taken for some of you to regain your taste but kind of nice to know there are other people out there going through the same thing. I was wondering if anyone had recovered in less than 2months.. I will be the most miserable person in the world if I still feel like this at Christmas!!

Hi the only thing you can do is wait your taste will return,it took ten weeks for my taste to fully return.

This terbinafine and UK meds Daktarin run parallel, symptoms, speed of reactions, same disastrous loss of taste buds, time of taste recovery. Is the make of these two meds the same?

Daktarin and the sister Daktarin oral gel.. The oral gel contains Miconazole: Pregelatinised potato starch, alcohol, polysorbate 20 (E432),sodium saccharin, cocoa flavour, orange flavour, glycerol and water. The oral gel was prescribed to repair the swelling of my gums lips and tongue. When I used this for three days lips, gums and tongue in that order calmed down but it seemed to heal backwards towards my throat and was pushing this sweeling down my throat attacking my larynx producing laryngitis and all the problems that this has which are frightening. I stopped taking the gel because it appears to push this evilness backwards and if it gets into my lungs I will be dead. One year later and I croak and am breathless when I speak.

      Some meds these!

Anybody out there to check if these two meds are of the same basis?

      Hi Rob,

Thanks for your reply. I think this condition creates a terrible sense of desperation and a craving for some light at the end of the tunnel. This is also the worst time of year to not be able to eat and drink. Having just be returned from a 2 month trip, I have been looking forward to catching up with all my friends who keep suggesting drinks or lunch or dinner and then there will be all the Xmas get togethers etc. I can already tell that people think I am exaggerating my symptoms because it is so hard to describe the affect on taste. I find eating out almost impossible because I can only stomach very plain food and can currently only drink water.

I am seeking some kind of realistic timeline for a return to normality and it seems that 8 weeks is not out of the question. If it does return by then, I was wondering if the 50% improvement kicks in at around 6 weeks and whether this is particularly welcome or still massively frustrating and food still tastes bad.

I have to confess that this has really got me down and have been feeling far too sorry for myself. I have decided to make myself eat the things that are good for me but taste awful. So managed a small helping of broccoli and carrot last night. Protein is my biggest challenge and so have bought some protein powder. I am a keen runner and recently did my first half marathon and don't want to be too unfit or weak to run and this is spurring me on to force food down. It's so odd to have to do this as my tummy rumbles all day long but the moment I have anything in front of me my appetite vanishes. I will have to stick to 5k and park run for now.

I also decided to give probiotics a go and wondered if anyone else here had tried this avenue.

Lastly..when does any enjoyment not alcohol come back...is that right at the end?? So missing beer and wine😣

Good luck to everyone out there in the same boat!

HI Sarah I know what you mean I got very down and yes people who have not experienced it don't understand. The thing is your taste will return but it's hard when there is nothing you can do to speed up the process.

    • Posted

      Yes Sarah

As Rob said taste seems to return but it's at different times for all of us. I don't see how Dr's don't give us s heads up on 'loss of taste' with so many of us experiencing this.

Hi Marlene, Thanks for your comments. How long did you have to wait until you recovered your taste and when did you first notice an imorovement?

It is interesting to hear other people's experiences. Thanks

      Sarah

It's been awhile back, but it took about 4 weeks for my taste to completely return. It did start returning gradually after a couple of weeks. But again, this seems to be different for everyone.

    • Posted

Thanks..completely understand everyone is different. Glad to hear you made a full recovery.

I must say that it was a pretty terrible experience... At first not knowing why my taste was going and then wondering when and if it would ever return. That's one med and experience I would never want to repeat.

exactly, the warnings are not appropriate, and it is wrong!!! if the warning was given to us, "oh hey by the way, you might lose your sense of taste for weeks maybe months if you take this.." how many of us would have said NO WAY!! thanks for your comment so true!
