Terbinafine will taste return

Posted , 44 users are following.

Have been on 250mg for 5 weeks for skin infection. Have now lost all sense of taste and miserable as choosing not to eat as dull and boring. I am choosing to stop medication now as nothing is worse than this and i fly on holiday tomorrow. Does anyone know if my taste will return to normal and how long this may take? 😞

I am in the UK. I took a product called "Daktarin" not "Terbinafine". However the results were the same as your's using Terinafine. Exact mirrored effects. Only my reaction was on the second days applicaition to my toes. Lost two years Xmas drinkss and Christms puddings. Everthing tasted of slimy oil. Eighteen months later my taste buds came back. I saw someone mentioned that they had red spots on hest and arms as well as loss of taste buds. While I trolled about this malady some Doctor said that if your reations were red spots on chest and back that this was a serious complaint and get to a Doctor quickly. Sorry I cannot recall this Doctors email.

dont worry, it will return..when my taste changed i had already been off of the med for 2 days..so once u stop then the healing of whatever it did to us will start..i had no taste or very distorted for over a month, but as of now..taste is finally coming back..slowly but surely, starting to actually enjoy quite a few things..good luck, from how long you took it i would guess give it 2 months max, u should be fine, hopefully shorter amt of time but i always say expect the worst in this situation, that way every positive change will be a good surprise..good luck and prayers for you <3

Hi don't worry your taste will return it normally takes about 6 weeks.

I took Terbinafine for 7 weeks before losing my taste completely. It is now 3 weeks since I stopped taking the tablets and I still have no taste whatsoever. I am encouraged that people on here have got their taste back as, at the moment, it feels that this will never happen. Two weeks until Christmas and I can't bear to make any meals as I have no appetite. Sadly, I had no idea that this was a common side effect until I lost my taste and started to look on the internet for an answer.

hey i have a similar story to you except mine is from, peridex a mouthwash, im on week 6 and i still cant taste everything right. i can taste most things but some foods are off, its hard to say if its getting better or worse but im getting worried ill never get mine back.

I never lost all my taste but I did notice some of my taste is muffled, this is really terrible. some people said it took them 9 months from using Peridex mouthwash, some people said years, some people said 2 weeks some people said a month. This is really driving me crazy, even though I didnt take lamisil like you guys Im suffering from peridex, a mouthwash, i guess its pretty strong. I only used it 4-5 times. Im really scared it wont come back..

      did yours ever come back?

I have just finished the same for nail fungus.  Can't even stand to drink water as it tastes so bad.  Hoping this salty taste in mouth will subside soon.  Everything tastes like crap.

    Hi Mirving,

I just discovered this site, thank goodness. My doctor prescribed Terbinafine 250Mg tablets for toe nail fungus. After taking the medication for 12 days I lost my sense of taste. I continued taking the medication for another 5 days before I made the connection between the drug and my loss of taste.

I have now discontinued using this drug and hope my sense of taste returns. I have the constant taste of salt in my mouth and baked good taste like cardboard. I'm 72 years old and hope that my sense of taste returns. It's heartening to read that other folks on this site have had their sense of taste return. I hope that my sense of taste returns as well.

I will see my doctor in 4 days and tell him of my concern. I'm sure he wasn't aware of these side effects as he assured me the medication was safe.

If anyone has any suggestions on how to handle my situation, it wouls be greatly appreciated.

      hello there!

i took terbinafine about 5 yrs ago. I took it about 2 weeks and my taste buds just stopped working right. I remember that I went off it after 2 weeks. I too was afraid that food would never taste good again.

I DO think that our DR's are aware of the loss of taste from this medication... but apparently this drug doesn't do this to everyone. My husband had NO problems with it.

Your taste WILL return. MY problem has been that I've never been able to get rid of this fungus.

Good luck to you... I truly think that you'll soon be enjoying food once again!

      Hi Marlene,

Thanks so much for your kind words, they're very encouraging. I had my toenail surgically removed last July. The surgery is like having a tooth extracted. The nail is growing back nicely. I have been told it takes a year for the new toenail to grow back. I was taking the Terbinafine as an adjunct to the surgery, it was big mistake.

I truly hope that other people don't suffer the consequences we experienced.

Hi mirving, I am so glad I found this thread! I know it is 5 years ago but reading the comments has given me hope. I am starting to sink into a bit of a depression to be honest - usually being a very well rounded individual, but I just cannot handle this complete lack of taste which has struck e. For a start off I simply do not believe it is 1% of patients who get complete taste loss, I think it is wildly underreported. I was on 250mg for 4.5weeks and came off it 3 days after noticing complete loss off taste. Has been a week now and saltiness has set in. Its depressing to say the least - I dont think you could describe it to someone who hasn't experienced it! Also the worry of not knowing it may not return at all. Apparently a few cases have never returned, although not sure of their age/circumstances/health etc. To be honest Im not even sure if I can handle this for another day letalone indefinitely!

    Hi,

I know what you're going through, since I'm now experiencing the same loss of taste. The color of my tongue has also changed to a slimy green color.

My doctor put me on another drug to try to clear up the color and for my taste to return. The drug is: Clotrimazole 10MG Lozenge. It seems to be slowly working. Just a tad of taste has returned for short periods of time and the awful green color of my tongue is slowly receding.

Wish you best of luck. You can also wish me luck as well.

The good news is yes it will return, the bad news is that it will take 6-7 weeks, or longer.
