terrible pain clinic treatment

Just finished my appointment. He diagnosed me with fibromyalgia, said that he doesn't think that the codeine is going to be effective or the nefopam. Because of my previous addiction problems wont prescribe me anything else, said nothing would help either. Had no other non medication therapies to offer. I asked if he would refer me to accupubture, he said no because it only has a 50% success rate. I asked about heated pool therapy, he said go to the swimming baths, asked about cbt, he said no cause im on the waiting list for DBT. I asked what im supposed to do, he said excercise more and that DBT would help with the mental aspect even though he had never heard of it. I said I wasn't happy and wanted a second opinion, he said he'd refer me internally but id go back on the waiting list and that would probably be another 12 weeks.

Seriously what is the point, what am I supposed to do? I really can't go on like this.

i no they are complete ares holes some doctors got you every which way.

i never watch any medical programes because its all fairy tails .

doctors making house calls thats a joke .

i have fibro to iv learnt to live with the pain because i dont wont meds that cause more problems and in  most cases they do your doctor is right there, iv heard of cbt and dbt  i dont even know what they stand for .iv certainly never been offered them .

i get bennifit at the moment so i pay for my stuff that helps a little , like magneisum flakes and oil . supplements b12,vit d3 q10.  accupunture works for some of the symptoms .but the best alternative treatment i found was reflexology weekly .

i know this is expensive i am just giving you info

. i am also struggling through a brain retraining course.

a school of thought on fibro is its linked to the prehistoric part of the brain desighned for flight or freight ,and due to the amydgala gland becoming stuck on flight thro injury ,or some other trauma and it keeps on producing the chemicals that helps us flee from danger which we dont need so hence build up in our body causing fatigue and pain .by retraining it puts this right .

Marc, write to PALS at the hospital and complain about your treatment and the unprofessional dismissive attitude of the doctor at pain clinic. We are all have a right to be treated equally, without judgment or discrimination.

this is a good idea intheroy

i did that on behalf of my son who lost half his body weight before they took me seriously that he was ill .

only thing is the doctors and consultants tended to be even more reluctent to move on this matter ,and were very agrassive towards both me and my son . so i would think twice hun could make matters worse,

That's dreadful. We are always hearing stories of mismanagement and it shouldn't happen- and professions always close ranks.

PALs are supposed to be there for the patients and to help liaise and advise. Marc could accept the acupuncture. It is worth a try. I had it a couple of years back for whiplash and it was very relaxing and worked for me. Even another referral would be all right. Some pain clinics are pretty good but it does depend who you get on the day.

I asked for accupubture but they refused my request saying "I needed to be in the right frame of mind" they seemed to be able to determine my state of mind within half an hour of meeting me.

Could you perhaps just make an appointment and talk things through with your GP. You don't have to see the same GP you're registered with so you should be able to choose one who is more familiar with fibro. Often it's trial and error. I think I've seen about 16 different doctors over 5 years before finding 2 who are pretty switched on.

See that's all I'm looking for. I know there is no wonder drug or treatment but even if it improved my quality of life by 15-20% that is better than improving my quality of life by 0%

yes people have to understand its more about keeping symptoms under control and not about a cure .eek

thats true i am fortunate enough to have dissability bennifit which i use for the treatments ,cost me £40 a go .i no not evryone is that fortunate , and after june i proberly wont be .as my bennifit runs out then . so i will be in the same situation. ,as i doubt under the new system i will get it .[ they must have invented a cure that i dont know about] hahaha

i dont know how your fixed money wise but a lot of people have got there lives back thro brain training programme  and are in full recovery .

Yes, they can be really patronising; like "how do you know /where did you hear about that?" Hello!! There's a big wide world web out there. They think we are apathetic but we are really proactive in helping ourselves, and seeking support.
