Testosterone!?

Posted , 9 users are following.

After reading a lot about HRT (which I am taking via patches due to hysterectomy with BSO) I have read a women actually need testosterone as well as oestrogen to help her well being, libido and mood swings. It seems it's not that readily available in UK, and I would like to give this a go. I would also like my blood checked for to see what my hormone levels are but my doctor don't seem too bothered about any of this. Does anyone know about taking testosterone and do any of you actually have your levels checked since losing womb and ovaries? I feel like we have this op and then just left to guess what hormones our bodies need. I don't think it's good enough. My libido is now non existent, my mind is definitely more forgetful and some days I feel 'old' !

Hi Nancy, I too was totally disappointed by the lack of after care and advice following my full hysterectomy 4 years ago...and had to go through 2 years of hell and multiple tests thinking something was seriously wrong with me..it's only been the last 6_8 months of self learning that I now understand the implications of loosing both ovaries. I saw a menopause specialist 6 months ago (my doctor was also lack lustre about doing this for me so I had to go private and actually said hormones would not effect me in such a way ie multiple awful daily sypmtoms, dizziness, anxiety, insomnia, chest tightness, muscle soreness etc ) who advised that yes you need testosterone also and I started taking bio identical hormones including this which helped with libido. If I knew then what I know now I would have fought for my ovaries too.! I think you are absoultely doing the right thing getting your blood tested for hormones. I wish I had done it alot sooner. What I have learnt also is that hormones fluctuate so it's worth checking levels on a regular basis to ensure your HRT continues to support you to the right levels needed for your body. Good luck with everything.

Thanks for that info Liz, I just cannot understand why they easily take the ovaries if they know we need them for future health. Surely it's wrong info they give out! I was led to believe once your past 51-52 yrs you don't need them anyway, I was 49 at time of op. She said in a couple of years time they will be no use to you anyway, how wrong is that?

I totally agree....so many woman have had their quality of life majorily impacted by wrong advice given...I was told conflicting things...at time of op was told the fibroids were also all around my ovaries (as well as womb) so I need them removed...then after seeing menopause specialist last year they were shocked that both were removed at 42 years old...so I went back to doctor to check my records and he said they removed them because of signs of potential cancer cells growth...my gut tells me they didn't need to remove them..but like you say it's too late now. I get seriously low days about it wishing I could turn back the clock, not healthly thinking I know. Hope it all works out as well as it can for you.

Hi Cheryl, I hear you on that one! (I ended up deliberately booking the locum.Dr to get my specialist appos booked coz my main Dr kept saying no no not needed) . Bio-identical hormones have the same chemical structure as the naturally occurring hormones which are produced in the body (they are derived from diosgenin, which is sourced from Mexican yams)

Those worked for me for first 2 years but after that stopped working for me...as far as I'm aware they are not bio and nhs don't provide them.

Yeah sometimes i feel like i need something more than the patch but i just wrote down the bio hormones to ask my dr about. Now you mentioned a mentalpause ( which is what i call it) dr. Is that someone that helps with all this crap?

Lol perfect description! They helped me to a certain extent and got rid of some sypmtoms but still getting other issues and been focusing on the herbal, diet, vitamins, excercise, meditation, relaxation route to help manage those - a daily military operation!

Does meditation really help? I was thinking about trying it..lol

Once I got used to it yes...if you do it daily it helps to 'center yourself' and when you get different sensations (ie horrible sypmtoms) to breathe through them rather than panic) I do mindfulness meditation but I've slipped the last few weeks so need to get back on it 😊

Hi Lis, I see that you know much about this problem. It would be great if you could give me some advises about what I have to start with.
