The Urolift procedure; patient views and questions

Posted , 264 users are following.

Would it be possible to keep this thread purely about Urolift and a means of sharing experiences from those who have undergone the process and invite debate from those considering it.

The Urolift process plus pros and cons are accurately described at many a website. Other very long threads discuss in detail BPH and other treatments such as TURPS, laser tend to overshadow people looking for advice on Urolift.

So for me, tired of getting up in the night. Tired of the medication and its side effects, tiredness and ED. Quality of life getting me down. I am 60 and reckon to be pretty fit and active.

I underwent this treatment (as an alternative to TURPS) 2 weeks ago at one of the 5 or 6 clinics/hospitals that appear to offer this treatment in the UK. It really was as simple as described on the web.

I had a 30 minute consultation with the consultant whereby he explained the procedure.

The treatment was booked for 10 am., it took about 15 minutes. I had it done under a local anaesthetic. To be frank if you are used to having your prostate and other bits probed there is no pain. It is just the thought of it you have to come to terms with. After the treatment you have to drink a lot of water to flush your system but I was allowed to drive home by dinner time.

First warning here. I did have to stop probably every 15 minutes with a sudden need to urinate. Fortunately I took a urine bottle from the clinic !

I could write for ages but will see what response I get to this post. I know on the day I was there, 4 other blokes were having the procedure and I sensed there was a regular flow of patients.

I’m now going through the period whereby I’m asking myself is there any improvement? It’s only 2 weeks in. I’m not sure is the answer at the moment. We are all different and recovery and improvement I am told does take time anything from 2/3 weeks to 2/3 months maybe longer. Your system needs time to readjust, I understand that, I don’t know how much time but I’m due for a follow up next week. I'm remaining positive.Would welcome comments from others.

I had the Urolift procedure today (The first person in Northern Ireland to have the procedure done) following the diagnosis of an enlarged prostrate three months ago.  At the time the consultant proscribed Tamsulosin Hydrochloride 400 Mc, the usual debilitating drugs to alleviate the symptoms.  At the time of the diagnosis, I was going to the toilet nine or ten times a day without fully emptying my bladder and at least five times a night.  Of course this made my day time hours poorer, re temper and patience reduction.  Following the initial diagnosis and not being happy re the proscribed meds side effects and after research via the web, I started self dosing 3 times a day  Saw Palmetto 2500mg 90 Capsules - Urinary Tract and Prostate Health Support Supplement for Men and 3 times a day Puritans Pride Pumpkin seed oil 1000 mg for men 100 Softgels.  Within 3 days I was going normally with good flow during the day and only once at night, which I thought, was usual for a 61 year old man.

I informed my Father in Law, who had suffered from Prostrate cancer and was going to the toilet 5 or 6 times a night as well, he now self doses with 2 times a day, Saw Palmetto 2500mg and Puritans Pride Pumpkin seed oil 1000 mg and has reduced his nocturnal trips to once or twice a night as well.

I found that immediately following the lift procedure I am suffering from the need to immediately urinate and have been informed that it may take up to 2 week to 2 months for the prostrate to start to behave normally.  Not being happy with the time scale I will continue to self dose of Saw Palmetto and Puritans Pride Pumpkin seed oi for the next two weeks . I am aware the Saw and Pumpkin do not reduce the prostrate but only alleviate the symptoms.  I am not sure which of the two are actually helping but at  £12 a month supply for both items it is worth every penny.

I will give an update at the 4 week point and 2 month point

Thanks for the correction james87669  , but i must also do this.  The word is The not Th.

Over 4 weeks since my operation and all is well.  Burning stopped after 3 days and streaming  urine like a 20 year old.  Down to once a night now.  Slight draw back in that when i have to go, i have to go.

Just had the Eurolift this afternoon , preop with 15 mg of Valium, plus 1

Lorcet 7.5/500 mg, with Xylocaine local.  Went well, about 10 min, staples were used rather than sutures. A bit uncomfortable when staples were place

albeit very brief. A little tender in the area, still a little difficult to urinate tonight, but just remembered to take the Flowmax ( for 7-10 more days only

    - ( I hope). Blood is present & will be for 1-2 weeks. Was told to avoid any excessive physical stress for 10-14 days. I am hopeful and optimistic of significant improvement in the next 2-3 weeks.  The anticipation was more stressful than actual procedure. Any comments from those from 1 day post op to several weeks. Thanjs

Hal  I hope all goes well for you.  Never heard anything about staples  Hows is that going to keep the prostate back.  And why were you not out??.  Where was this done?  I had a Urolift done a year ago had 4 implants and was out when he did it.  Good luck  Ken

Sent you an e mail; just to follow up the self cath was really pretty easy,

but don't expect to deal with that very long. I will get back to you after I ask a few follow up questions. I can only assume @ the moment that the staples are an improvement! They had better be!!😷

Staples are just part of the clips, sutures, apparatus, nothing different. Two days post op, taking ibuprofen, Levoquin (prevent infection ) for 10 days. Feeling pretty good, still burning which he told me to expect for 7-10 days.

will see how things are in a week. Also had 4 Implants. Hoping for improvement in a couple of weeks as advertised.

    Hi All

My name is Stephen from Sydney Australia. I am 58. Thanks for all your posts. Very informative.

I have had problems with starting to urinate for years. Takes up to 1 minute to start. Now I have low pressure and not emptying. Normally have to go to toilet once per night. So my symptoms aren't too severe but nevertheless annoying.

I went to see a urologist last week and have since had a cystoscopy. This revealed my prostate is blocking my urethra. It also showed that my prostate is small and quite saggy/loose which is why the doctor has recommended I have a Urolift. So I have opted to have the Urolift done this Thursday. The doctor has done many of these and assures me I will be peeing like a 20 year old again. I'm not so sure but very hopeful. I will report back when I have news. I am not looking forward to the first week. Sounds like I'm in for a bit of pain.

Hello my friend.  You have make the right pick of a procedure.  I have had a urolift done a year ago and still going strong.  The only thing is have the doctor put in a catheter to help pee.  Sometimes after the procedure the prostate get a little bigger and it will stop you from peeing.  It is better to have it put in while your under they not being able to pee and have to go to the hospital.  I had one for 3 days and it works great Had 4 implants put in.  They say no catheter but it up to you and and your doctor.  Take care and good luck  Ken

      Hi Kenneth1955

I had my procedure done 3 weeks ago today! No catheter placed, but sent me home with a few of them!

Needed self cath one time that evening, but not sense! My symptoms seem much better, except the last few nights have had to get up 4-5 times again! Off flowmax & rapaflow! MD says 2-4 weeks to really start to see much improvement!

So overall better but am looking for continued improvement! Also had 4 plants placed!

I had mine done on a monday and by friday I was goot to go.  I have a problem peeing on demand so to play it safe the dr and I talked and a catheter was the best thing.  My urine was clear by night time and havinf it out was no problem  Did burn the first day it came out but all was good.  You will get better everything will relax.  Also jsut for your information.  My orgasm are more intence then they were before.  Take care and just relax drick alot of water  Ken

Well I had the Urolift on thursday and all went well. The doctor even showed me before and after shots. Nice clear passage now.

I was programmed for day surgery only but ended up staying overnight to manage the pain. Im home now but still uncomfortable 40 hour after procedure. I don't have a catheter which is fine I just use a bottle so I don't have to get up.

Pressure seems a lot better and no hesitation to start now. So all looking positive but still early days. There is a lot of things that need to settle down.

One thing that is hindering my recovery is I am constipated from the procedure and pain medication. Once I have a bowel movement I will be better I think. I will keep updating.

      Cheers Solly.

So it is now 5 days since procedure. Getting better but still sore. Burning feeling and urges to urinate even when empty. Having said that I am feeling better everyday but it is a very slow process. Haven't left home yet as I feel I need to go to bathroom too often. I will update again in a few days. I am surprised to hear others report they were back at work in a few days. I must be a bad patient. Does anyone know if you can upload photos on this  forum??

Ken, Did you post that one of your pins came lose?

I could be mistaken but I thought I read that.

Yes I did on one of the other sites.  It was because my prostate got smaller had 1 replace and the other 3 tighten  I would do it again.  My urologist is great guy  Ken

Ken, I know you're a big fan of urolift but the episode you described seemed to be incredibly painful and, had you not been near a good doctor, perhaps dangerous. I had not thought of shrinking prostates and loose pins as a risk factor of Urolift. It deserves to be highlighted so prostate sufferers on this forum will see it.

I did not know it was loose until my doctor did a scopen me to check my stricture It did hurt when he tried to pin it on the prostate  I had him stop.  He did notify the company.  They sent me a nice letter.  It was the first time this was reported.  I would do it again  Ken

Ok it's been 2 weeks since I had my urolift done. All good at the moment re flow and starting without delay. I'm a little surprised at the slow recovery. I am a lot better than last week however I can still feel that someone has done something below. I have strong urges to go to the toilet when I am standing. Lying down is good. Sitting is still uncomfortable but getting better. Can anyone say how long it takes to fully recover. All in all I am happy with my outcome but a little impatient I suppose. I have a post op appointment with urologist in 2 weeks.
