The Urolift procedure; patient views and questions

Posted , 264 users are following.

Would it be possible to keep this thread purely about Urolift and a means of sharing experiences from those who have undergone the process and invite debate from those considering it.

The Urolift process plus pros and cons are accurately described at many a website. Other very long threads discuss in detail BPH and other treatments such as TURPS, laser tend to overshadow people looking for advice on Urolift.

So for me, tired of getting up in the night. Tired of the medication and its side effects, tiredness and ED. Quality of life getting me down. I am 60 and reckon to be pretty fit and active.

I underwent this treatment (as an alternative to TURPS) 2 weeks ago at one of the 5 or 6 clinics/hospitals that appear to offer this treatment in the UK. It really was as simple as described on the web.

I had a 30 minute consultation with the consultant whereby he explained the procedure.

The treatment was booked for 10 am., it took about 15 minutes. I had it done under a local anaesthetic. To be frank if you are used to having your prostate and other bits probed there is no pain. It is just the thought of it you have to come to terms with. After the treatment you have to drink a lot of water to flush your system but I was allowed to drive home by dinner time.

First warning here. I did have to stop probably every 15 minutes with a sudden need to urinate. Fortunately I took a urine bottle from the clinic !

I could write for ages but will see what response I get to this post. I know on the day I was there, 4 other blokes were having the procedure and I sensed there was a regular flow of patients.

I’m now going through the period whereby I’m asking myself is there any improvement? It’s only 2 weeks in. I’m not sure is the answer at the moment. We are all different and recovery and improvement I am told does take time anything from 2/3 weeks to 2/3 months maybe longer. Your system needs time to readjust, I understand that, I don’t know how much time but I’m due for a follow up next week. I'm remaining positive.Would welcome comments from others.

I live in San Diego Ca and had the procedure 2 days ago.  It was performed with general anesthesia but I was released home the same day.

I can report that the procedure seemed to have gone well, per the doctor. I left with a catheter in me (removed yesterday morning) but it was very painful. I was given generic pyridium for urinary pain, cipro to prevent infection and Tramadol for pain.

I have consistently been able to urinate but it''s painful and there is still some blood in my urine. I'm also finding that I've been urinating quite alot. Not large quantities but still more than previously.  That is the case today as well and I'm finding that when I stand up there is generally a very strong urge to urinate.

I saw  some of the comments below so I thought I'd add my experience to the list.

I was told I would be feeling better within 2-4 weeks and have a follow up schedule for early November.  at that time they will give me a urine flow test as well as follow up with the surgeon.

I appreciate the experiences listed in this list. Thanks to all who contribute.

I thought I'd update my progress.  It's now 5 days since the surgery (10/6) which was performed at Kaiser San Diego.  I'm still feeling much stinging when I pee and it stings both at the tip of my penis and below where I assume the staples were implanted. (FYI there's video on the internet of exactly what the Urolift surgical procedure looks like).  I'm somewhat disappointed with my flow at this point but it seems to be getting stronger. I had 2 clips put into my prostate.  Hopefully things will get more regular with the passage of time but I'm still peeing frequently--just not as frequently--and the quantity has increased from small amts at mulitple intervals to larger amounts with smaller intervals.  But still quite painful. It was good to read about the lubricated catheters some have mentioned --wish I had that information as I was catheterized for one day and it was miserable. Finally, I was given no specific instructions on when to quit my meds--proscar and hytrin--but told to use them until they ran out and then quit. And those drugs were causing me sexual disfunction.

When my wife spoke to the surgeon immediately afterwards she was told that the enlargement of my prostate was less than he anticipated.  Now in talking to my wife she doesn't recall him saying there were "only" two. But that's what I thought he said.  FYI his name is Brandon Isariyawongse.  It's a week later and I'm still in pain. I hope that I'm remembering this wrong and will find out when I see him soon.  Thanks for the inquiry and the advise.

Thank you so much for your reply to my post.  It's now exactly a week from my surgery and it's starting to feel better.  I did talk to the surgeon and was advised I had 5 "staples" placed in. I did use the pain meds but they didn't make a huge difference.

Well I have been quiet for a while! Had the

UL done a few months ago, and after a month or so, things seemed much better! Post op check showed I was voiding well.

Well about 2 weeks ago, I have started having lower abdominal discomfort again and the last week, voiding has become more sluggish and much like before the procedure! So I have a semi emergency appointment tomorrow am with my Urologist. I even did a self cath last night and that helped! Maybe the sutures have worked loose! Hope to have some answers in the am!

Sorry to hear about your issues. I'm 10 weeks post procedure and doing well but still sometimes think about the various things that could go wrong. Good luck and we look forward to hearing about the situation.

I'm sorry to hear your having a problem.  I did not know my implant was lose until I had a scope done in the office.  I did have a prostate infection but no pain.  The reason that happen was that my prostate got smaller  Ken

Same thing happened to me. Had Urolift done sept 2015. 12 mths later lower abdominal discomfort and urinary problems returned. Returned to urologist and he said prostate was growing and prolapsing around the the four bands. He put in 4 more bands so I now have 8. Slight improvement in symptoms (was done. 13/9/16) still abdominal discomfort

      Looks like holep eventually

I had Uro-Lift about 14 months ago.  Done by Dr. Bill Badger at Flagstaff Medical Center in Flagstaff, AZ.  He put in six dealie bobs to hold my urethra open.  The gizmo to install the dealie bobs is a single shot rig so he had to go in and back out six times.  That kind of insults the urethra and as expected I peed blood for a few days.  He gave me narcotics for the pain but never had to use them.  Girlfriend drove me home...me wth my penis out, hanging into a pee bottle thing with a blanket over me...dribbled most of the way home.  It does take a while to heal.  But getting off Flomax was a dream...actually could ejacuate out again instead of in.  Flomax does lower blood pressure and coming off it raised mine so doc had to add a replacement med that works great.  It just got better and better, fewer ups to pee every night.  It took about a year to feel totally back to normal....now sleep up to nearly 6 hours continuous with one up to pee.  Sometimes up twice to pee.  And when I pee I pee like a drunken teenager....what a joy!  When I ejaculate I ejaculate like a teenager too.  Not bad for age 72.   Only problem was that doc said insurance paid for the operation.  They didn't.  Got a bill for over $18,000 USD.  I called the hospital and told them I was my brother and that I was found dead on the living room floor clutching their bill.  Had to appeal and took a long time but the hospital was patient...eventually all but $1,200 USD was paid by insurance.  With the improved life from the operation I was more than happy to pay that, and did.  Well worth the bleeding at first and whatever pain....like anything else good there's a price to pay.

Hello everyone, I just had the Urolift done at the University of Illinois Chicago. Today is the day after and I feel fine. I was released the same day and I woke up from general anathesia with a new cath. The cath should be removed at my followup appointment in 9 days. When I woke I noticed a slight stinging in my dick probably from the irritation of the procedure and it went away in a few hours after I took 600mg ibuprofen at home. Now I'm just taking it easy and working from the Internet. I drank lots of water yesterday evening and by this morning my urine color was normal. Sorry I have nothing to report on whether or not my BPH was mitigated but I wanted to share my experience thus far because the information posted here helped me make the decision to do the Urolift. Maybe my experience will help someone else make a decision either way. My thanks to all who posted here! I will add more when I know more.
