The Urolift procedure; patient views and questions

Would it be possible to keep this thread purely about Urolift and a means of sharing experiences from those who have undergone the process and invite debate from those considering it.
The Urolift process plus pros and cons are accurately described at many a website. Other very long threads discuss in detail BPH and other treatments such as TURPS, laser tend to overshadow people looking for advice on Urolift.
So for me, tired of getting up in the night. Tired of the medication and its side effects, tiredness and ED. Quality of life getting me down. I am 60 and reckon to be pretty fit and active.
I underwent this treatment (as an alternative to TURPS) 2 weeks ago at one of the 5 or 6 clinics/hospitals that appear to offer this treatment in the UK. It really was as simple as described on the web.
I had a 30 minute consultation with the consultant whereby he explained the procedure.
The treatment was booked for 10 am., it took about 15 minutes. I had it done under a local anaesthetic. To be frank if you are used to having your prostate and other bits probed there is no pain. It is just the thought of it you have to come to terms with. After the treatment you have to drink a lot of water to flush your system but I was allowed to drive home by dinner time.
First warning here. I did have to stop probably every 15 minutes with a sudden need to urinate. Fortunately I took a urine bottle from the clinic !
I could write for ages but will see what response I get to this post. I know on the day I was there, 4 other blokes were having the procedure and I sensed there was a regular flow of patients.
I’m now going through the period whereby I’m asking myself is there any improvement? It’s only 2 weeks in. I’m not sure is the answer at the moment. We are all different and recovery and improvement I am told does take time anything from 2/3 weeks to 2/3 months maybe longer. Your system needs time to readjust, I understand that, I don’t know how much time but I’m due for a follow up next week. I'm remaining positive.Would welcome comments from others.

Charles I just had urolift under a general anesthetic 6 days ago. But a blood vessel either ruptured or was nicked and I had bleeding so I had to stay in the next door Hospital. So by the next day the bleeding and blood clots stopped so I never did find out that the blood clots come from the process of trying to clot the bleeding spot. First couple days very painful urination and no bowel movements. But now I have many beams along with at the same time I'm urinating. I'm trying to drink more fluids and have a soft diet applesauce oatmeal Jell-O. I got a good case of hemorrhoids but they haven't been bleeding surprisingly. I have to go do the toilet every 30 to 60 minutes and even during the night although I might get a hour to two hour span of time so I'm wondering if this is all kind of normal in the healing process? So if anybody can comment on this I would appreciate it. I'm going to read some of the other replies and I'm even thinking of calling the doctor by Monday morning just to confirm.

Thanks Ken, yes I think I need to up my water doctor said to drink every hour and I guess that means maybe 8 ounces what do you think? What do you think about this constant urination with accompany bowel movement? I'm just wondering if I have an infection that is just causing me to have frequent trips to the toilet. I'm taking Cipro and Pyridium and how many days did it take for you to get back to normal? William

I'm a 68 year old man, and I opted for the Urolift ptocedure just yesterday in Dayton, Ohio. Today I'm passing a lot of blood in my urine, and the need to 'go' is every ten to twenty minutes. The blood may be subsiding a little bit. I have to restrain exercising for a week. I read that recovery may take two to three weeks. I think it will be worth it if it gets me off medication and relieves getting up three or four times a night to use the bathroom. I hope I have made the right choice!

Bruce, Urolift worked for me. It's been 15 months now and off any meds and can get through the night without getting up. Maybe a little longer on your recovery so hang in there and it will get better. Good luck with the recovery and keep posting. Bob

I'm same age as you and had the Urolift done in late February. I was luck to have minor bleeding only the first day and passed a clot on the 3rd day. Two months later, my night time experience is better than before the procedure but it is up and down. Some nights I make through the night. Some nights 1-3 times. I would take it easy on returning to exercise. Walking is ok. Light weights only. I tried a spinning class 3-4 weeks after (I think) and decided in advance to only do 30 min of a 60 min class. It was a good decision as I started peeing as soon as I got back to the locker room (into a towel until I got to the urinal). I am playing senior tennis (doubles) 3 times a week and running about 10 miles (very slowly) a week at present. I am glad to get off the tamsulosin. I feel that I am retraining my bladder control (don't know exactly how). It may take a few months. I am having fewer minor accidents. I have 2nd follow up with the urologist in 4 months (first was after 2 weeks). Hope that helps.

I am new to this discussion thread. I am due to have the urolift procedure here in England. I am an active triathlete and very young at 48yrs old. I would be interested to know how the spinning classes and running are going now ? Is there any greater perceived discomfort from sitting on a bike saddle or from running for some time ?

Hi Adam, I am 62 years young and had Urolift in Chelmsford last November. I am overweight but put in several hard gym sessions a week and /or 2 hour hard cycle rides. My surgeon suggested I should avoid the Gym for 3 weeks. First few days there was a lot of discomfort when urinating but progressively better so by around a week was mainly pain free. did not feel the clips (I had 4) at any time. Strangely had an occasional feeling of discomfort around the anal passage which surgeon said should not have been an issue but that went after about 6 weeks. Only minor blood in the urine for first 24 hours. I was walking around with no problem within 24 hours. I went back to the gym after 4 weeks had a minor chest infection . I will do 30/60 mins on the vario machine which is step/stride combo with no problem. I built up time on gym cycle from 20 mins to 1 hour over a couple of weeks and at no time did I have any discomfort/ feel the clips (even with my extra weight pressing down) . usually do 10 mins on rowing maching and various upper body heavy weights etc and on discomfort. I take on fluid throughout my 1.5-2 hour workout and don't have to run to the toilet at all..As I'm a fair weather outdoor cyclist I did not get back on the road bike for 4 months but was happily completing my usual 2 hour route without any problems. My problem was continually peeing up to 5/6 time in the night and way to often during the day My Bladder was not emptying fully. Post op I am down to a couple of time in the night. During the day time I was peeing way to often and sometimes if I was away from toilet facilities and would be in a lot of pain trying to hold it in. I am still peeing to often especially throughout the morning but I can now go much longer and don't have the pain. I did 5 hours on a bike last week and only need one pee stop. Hope this helps.

Hi John
Thanks for your detailed reply, yes it has helped.
5 hours on a bike with one pee stop is great ! I too visited Essex urology. Currently under Mr Thilagarajah but that may change to Mr Lewis.(i'm yet to meet him)
You have given me a positive outlook, as the thought of having some internal hardware is taking a while for me to come to terms with.
My condition is not as serious as yours however it's the normal case of standing at a urinal (after 2 or 3 pints) and seeing half a dozen people come and go. Or worse still, having to pee in a race, and seeing half the field overtake me. (that's my excuse anyway)
Thanks agin

After my procedure 9 days ago I had a catheter when I left the hospital and what a pain. I had it removed the next morning. The first night after having the catheter removed was not good. I had to get up several times (5 or more) and would have to wait 3 or 4 minutes before my stream started. After I did all I could do I still felt like I needed to urinate more. I would wait another 4 or 5 minutes and my stream would start again, but not as much was passed the second time. During the day the wait time was frustrating, 2 or 3 minutes at a minimum. This continued for about 5 days then the number of times I had to get up at night was reduced to about 3 but the wait times was still 2 to 3 minutes.
Now 9 days later it still takes a long time before my stream begins. My stream is a little fuller than it was but not very strong. I don’t have to get up as much at night, and I am hopping things will improve soon and all of this will be worth the effort. If anyone has had the same situation as I have described I would love to hear how things turned out for you.
