The Urolift procedure; patient views and questions
Posted , 264 users are following.
Would it be possible to keep this thread purely about Urolift and a means of sharing experiences from those who have undergone the process and invite debate from those considering it.
The Urolift process plus pros and cons are accurately described at many a website. Other very long threads discuss in detail BPH and other treatments such as TURPS, laser tend to overshadow people looking for advice on Urolift.
So for me, tired of getting up in the night. Tired of the medication and its side effects, tiredness and ED. Quality of life getting me down. I am 60 and reckon to be pretty fit and active.
I underwent this treatment (as an alternative to TURPS) 2 weeks ago at one of the 5 or 6 clinics/hospitals that appear to offer this treatment in the UK. It really was as simple as described on the web.
I had a 30 minute consultation with the consultant whereby he explained the procedure.
The treatment was booked for 10 am., it took about 15 minutes. I had it done under a local anaesthetic. To be frank if you are used to having your prostate and other bits probed there is no pain. It is just the thought of it you have to come to terms with. After the treatment you have to drink a lot of water to flush your system but I was allowed to drive home by dinner time.
First warning here. I did have to stop probably every 15 minutes with a sudden need to urinate. Fortunately I took a urine bottle from the clinic !
I could write for ages but will see what response I get to this post. I know on the day I was there, 4 other blokes were having the procedure and I sensed there was a regular flow of patients.
I’m now going through the period whereby I’m asking myself is there any improvement? It’s only 2 weeks in. I’m not sure is the answer at the moment. We are all different and recovery and improvement I am told does take time anything from 2/3 weeks to 2/3 months maybe longer. Your system needs time to readjust, I understand that, I don’t know how much time but I’m due for a follow up next week. I'm remaining positive.Would welcome comments from others.

Hey, thanks for starting and sustaining this site.
In Jan2017 I got a (to me) sudden rise in PA, from 2.3 for 15 years to 4.2, then 5.6 six weeks later. Turned 74 in January, too. Did some research, found the Sperling site with lots of good info on modern testing/diagnostics. My primary sent me to a Dr Mehan, here in Phoenix/Mesa and to my great relief, he's doing everything in the most advanced way I found described anywhere (at this time) namely the mpMRI with composite live ultrasound for biopsies. 4 different MRI's about 40 min in the tunnel at 3T power.
Reported 47mlsize, 3 lesions with near certainty of malignant. Mehan took 20 samples, 6 each lesion, 2 control, and result was benign all the way. Cysto and he proclaimed me suitable for any of the 3 procedures he performs: Urolift, Green Light, and "steam" and I chose Uro. Had it done last Thursday 1pm, peed easily at the office, so opted out of catheter, home by 2pm. All was well until 9pm when I couldn't void. By 2am great discomfort, 5am to the ER per Mehan to get catheterized, with 3 day recommendation. All went well except for the inconvenience. Dr. removed it this am, minor burning at end of dick when pee, but otherwise everything (including ejaculation) working just fine.
Total put of pocket $175 for 2ndary genomic biopsy.
Only issue 12 hours after removal of cath is urgency and frequency of peeing, but from what I read here, that should improve daily. If I don't post again, assume the prediction is proving out. Now I'm looking forward to getting back on the tennis court for daily 1 1/2 - 2 hour sessions, maybe this weekend.

Please let me know if you had any pain meds for the urolift, were you put out?

3-T MPMRIs are only fairly definitive when they find NO possibility of cancer, otherwise they can be wrong (mine was, it was 4/5 on Liekhart scale). Did you get to having a biopsy ? (you said, "near certainty of malignant?"

Ok, my Urolift failed, doctor said that he could not get the Urolift tool into my bladder, that it was the first time he was not able to do, said that I have a bend in my urine tube and he couldn't get it into my bladder, he put one in but not up were it needed to be. Said I would have to be put under Anastasia because it was to painful,?said if I was out he could get it done but that if we were going to go to hospital I should just go with the green light? Not sure if I should continue with another doc that uses Anastasia or what. Un sure on what to do

Paul I think he did not want to do the urolift and you can't say it failed because it was not compleated. If you have any other surgery there going to put you out so have the easy one that does not cause side effects. When I had mine I was out in 3 hours no problems and no side effects You will only be inthe hospital a few hours for either one. That doctor just want to cut out your prostate. You just need a tunnel made which the urolift will do I would go see another doctor that would do the urolift I would not trust him to do it because you are going against him, He would mess it up so you would just come back and he will tell you you were wrong in the first place. GET A NEW DOCTOR Ken

I question even talking to a doctor who has done a lot of Urolift procedures. Six weeks ago when talking to the doctors I asked if there were any precautions to take. Nope. I asked again, answer was no. I asked do I fast, told no no, eat a light breakfast morning of. Three weeks ago I call about a certain medicine (Myrbetriq) to see if I will still have to take it after the procedure, as it's a $100 co-pay on my part. I get a call three hours later to stop taking it five days before the procedure because if I don't pee after the procedure I'll end up with a catheter as this medicine calms down an overactive bladder. Knowing I'm going to be on antibiotics I call Monday to have the doctor call in the script, as I'll be in no mood to pick up meds after the procedure. I get a call at 5 PM today. Mind you I'm in my underwear, getting ready to go to sleep after my insulin shot and Parkinson's medicine, as my Urolift will be performed tomorrow morning. Told to start taking the antibiotics tonight and one tomorrow morning. WTH? Then I was told to take a fleet enema tonight and one hour before the procedure tomorrow morning. WTH over? Now I got to dress up and go to the pharmacy to pick up two bottles of Fleet Enema. I came real close to cancelling the procedure. I hate doctors.

I'm having a local and I think a prostate block. It's being done at the doctor's office. I'll report back once I feel up to it hopefully sometime this afternoon (July 11) or the first chance I can.

Have no idea how many he'll put in. I'm just hoping I don't need a catherter. I had a funny exchange with my best friend. I told hime I bought some adult diapers. He told me I should wait to see if I need them. I told him I have leather upholostery and driving home from the doctor is not a time to realize I need diapers. Besides, I have electric heaters in the seat, and I don't feel like shorting them out on the ride home. :-)

Just got home. Got stuck on Delaware 896 for 30 minutes, over load tractor trailer. Tried to get to Denny's to use their toilet as it was closer. Never made it. Smart decision on the adult diapers. I am bleeding, have six implants. Told to stay on Myrbetriq and Flomax for now (boo). No soda, lattes, or coffee for a week along with baby aspirin. Painful to urinate, Penis is irritated., feel like peeing all the time. Told to drink minimum of 96 oz of water each day for a week to flush out my system. Actual procedure was over in 15 minutes, the preparation took 30 minutes. No catheter. I have something in common with the laddies, I was in stirrups.

There's medications for an overactive bladder, and for urinary pain. If he didn't give you any, ask for them. They will help.

For urinary pain I was told to drink 96 oz of water or more per day, it will eventually flush out the system. I have been on Myrbetriq for OAB the last two years, was told to go off for seven days prior to the procedure as the doctor wanted nothing to hinder my urine flow as he was trying to determine if I needed a catheter. I was told yesterday to resume Mybetriq after the procedure.
I was so tired last night after not getting much sleep the night before I dozed off. Got up a couple times to urinate. Now I know why the mass amout of water to drink, as it appears I'm stilll bleeding and it's clotting up. If my pain level on a scale of 1 to 10 where 10 is very painful when I did urinate, I'd say I'm at a 5 right now.

96 ounces is a lot of water. Is the person who recommended that much water aware of what's happening with your leakage, etc. Also, that much water could potentially tax your bladder and make it more difficult to void. I would run the water thing pesonally by the doctor who did the Urolift, describing your latest symptons, if you haven't already.

The 96 oz of water is what both the doctor and nurse recommended. I had to go back yesterday afternoon to have an ultra sound done on the bladder to see it it was full. I didn't quite make it to the doctor's office when I completely voided myself. Thank God for adult diapers. Bladder was empty. I was told to keep drinking 96 oz a day for about a week until my urine stream is clear. Every now and then I pass a lot of blood and what appears to be large blood clots. If I don't drink (like over night) the first pee feels like the blood has cloted in the urethea and it shots out under a lot of pressure.

I don't even know why I bother posting when you get comments deleted by the moderator (two so far) as this site gives good information from those who are going through the urolift procedure or are thinking of doing it, so this will be my last comment.
I had my urolift procedure done on July 11, 2017. This is July 16. I am in no pain, now have full bladder control, waking up no more than two times at night to urinate, most nights only once. Still on my medication for the time being, as my urologist plans on weaning me off the medicaions within the next 90 days. The only problem I do have is not urolift related, and that's if I'm at some place with an urge to urinate, but hold off until I get home. Somehow in the process of driving home, getting out of the car, and walking up a flight of steps causes a very strong urge to urinate and it's a race to the toliet with some leakage before I'm able to urinate into the toliet. I'm no longer getting up six or more times at night to go to the bathroom. I wish I had this procedure done years ago. I thank you for your comments, and thiis board in the months leading up to my decision to have the urolift procedure done. Take care.

I never had a problem urinating before the procedure. My problem was frequent urination, where I have to get up six or more times at night to urinate. If I go easy on the coffee and soda, I now only get up at most two times a night to urinate, most nights it is only once. If I have coffee or soda aftet 6 PM I may have to get up three times. Still haven't completely regained bladder control, I would say I'm about 80% there. I am very pleased with UroLift.

After my procedure 9 days ago I had a catheter when I left the hospital and what a pain. I had it removed the next morning. The first night after having the catheter removed was not good. I had to get up several times (5 or more) and would have to wait 3 or 4 minutes before my stream started. After I did all I could do I still felt like I needed to urinate more. I would wait another 4 or 5 minutes and my stream would start again, but not as much was passed the second time. During the day the wait time was frustrating, 2 or 3 minutes at a minimum. This continued for about 5 days then the number of times I had to get up at night was reduced to about 3 but the wait times was still 2 to 3 minutes.
Now 9 days later it still takes a long time before my stream begins. My stream is a little fuller than it was but not very strong. I don’t have to get up as much at night, and I am hopping things will improve soon and all of this will be worth the effort. If anyone has had the same situation as I have described I would love to hear how things turned out for you.

I'm on day two. I had to have a catheter put in yesterday. Today I don't need a catheter but I find myself running to the bathroom, and not making it twice, when I need to pee.
Any idea how long this will go on for. I'm going to get some adult diapers so I don't mess up my bed tonight. I guess the diapers are not the end of the world, as long as it's very temporary.
My first day was pure hell and I ended up in the emergency room last night. That could have been avoided if I had been sent home with some do it yourself catheters. Also, I wish the doctor had told me all the side effects, like not having sex for 3 weeks. I'm so dumb that I really believed I would recover from this procedure in two days.
