The Urolift procedure; patient views and questions

Posted , 264 users are following.

Would it be possible to keep this thread purely about Urolift and a means of sharing experiences from those who have undergone the process and invite debate from those considering it.

The Urolift process plus pros and cons are accurately described at many a website. Other very long threads discuss in detail BPH and other treatments such as TURPS, laser tend to overshadow people looking for advice on Urolift.

So for me, tired of getting up in the night. Tired of the medication and its side effects, tiredness and ED. Quality of life getting me down. I am 60 and reckon to be pretty fit and active.

I underwent this treatment (as an alternative to TURPS) 2 weeks ago at one of the 5 or 6 clinics/hospitals that appear to offer this treatment in the UK. It really was as simple as described on the web.

I had a 30 minute consultation with the consultant whereby he explained the procedure.

The treatment was booked for 10 am., it took about 15 minutes. I had it done under a local anaesthetic. To be frank if you are used to having your prostate and other bits probed there is no pain. It is just the thought of it you have to come to terms with. After the treatment you have to drink a lot of water to flush your system but I was allowed to drive home by dinner time.

First warning here. I did have to stop probably every 15 minutes with a sudden need to urinate. Fortunately I took a urine bottle from the clinic !

I could write for ages but will see what response I get to this post. I know on the day I was there, 4 other blokes were having the procedure and I sensed there was a regular flow of patients.

I’m now going through the period whereby I’m asking myself is there any improvement? It’s only 2 weeks in. I’m not sure is the answer at the moment. We are all different and recovery and improvement I am told does take time anything from 2/3 weeks to 2/3 months maybe longer. Your system needs time to readjust, I understand that, I don’t know how much time but I’m due for a follow up next week. I'm remaining positive.Would welcome comments from others.

    Hi all

Completed 2 weeks ago under sedation, went home with no catheter but probably needed one.

Excruciating pain when peeing, less pain after 1 week when the clots and other stuff stopped.

Underestimated the amount of pain, thought I had an infection but culture tests were negative, this is what happens the surgeon said, get some more painkillers.

So on to day 15 and it’s getting better but still a way to go, not sure the stream is stronger but off all medication so a bonus, stop urge peeing and getting the bladder fuller my targets this week

I admire you for having sex, I’m following the 4 week rule, off on holiday next week so need to survive the plane journey

John  How is your daughter doing I hope well.  The doctor only did the Urolift right.  Left the bladder neck alone I hope.  It will take longer to heal.  Try to relax and I hope all goes well  Ken

Hi Ken...I am considering having the bladder neck incision as the Urolift has has done bugger all to relieve my many trips to the loo...I asked the urologist who did the procedure if the incision will render me incontinent, he said there was only a 5% chance!.....what do you think as I'm not a gambling guy?....I have less of a problem with retrograde ejaculation as my sex life at 76 is pretty much over I guess!..

      Kind regards,

      Chris.

Hello Chris................I'm not a doctor but I love to gamble but not with my body I do talk a lot about the UROLIFT  and adding other procedures at the same time.         The company will not stand by the UROLIFT if something is added at the same time. The UROLIFT should stand alone.  I do not know your problem but how many clips did they put in.  Maybe he did not put in enough.  You can have 2 to 8 put in.  I had 4 clips 2 on each side.  Still wide open.  I have know a few guys that they had to be re done and have more put in to keep them open.  The bladder neck incision can help sometimes but some men it takes a long time to heal and it is very painful   One of the men that I have talk to had it done he links all the time and had to wear pads to keep dry.  Your doctor is telling you that there is only a 5% chance of incontinent but in the article that I just read to get more information it is closer to 10%.  It is also saying that it will take month's to heal and see any results(frequency, urgency and getting up at night) Also remember when they do the surgery they will do 1 or 2 cut and remove some of the prostate tissue that is attached to the bladder neck.  You will not close right. Other side effects are Retro at 20% and poor erection at 14%.  And repeat's of the procedure are at 10%.  I hope this help some.  Have you ever tried CIC to relieve your bladder.  That may be a way to go without having any other procedure..Ken

Did my 8 week follow. Basically zero improvement and what’s more frustrating is still having to take Tamsulosin. I try cutting down to every other day, but by 48 hours I’m struggling to pee. Totally disappointed. MD says we could do a scope and see what’s going on. Look at Green thing or the hot steam option. None appeal. Going to forget about it until the end of h summer, then do the scope. Doubt I’ve got the courage to go through another procedure, even if its just Urolift and a few more wires.

I think that is wise.  I just sent a post to chris73717 on the bladder neck incision.  Take a look at it if you can.  It may help you out.  Take it easy and enjoy your new grandson  Ken

sometime they do not put enough in to work.  I was lucky only have 4.   2 on each side.  You may just need a few more.  UROLIFT is much easier to have done then the others.  Give yourself some time We all heal at different rates.  Ken

Probably right Ken. Going to leave it while I forget how unpleasant it was, scope in the Fall. But I’m not going to try anything else, Urolift or nothing.

No problem.  Why do you say it was unpleasant.  Did you have it done in the office.  Ken

Threw a clot, total blockage 24 hours after procedure, had to go to ER of catheter, nearly exploded. Pulled it out myself 24 hours later. No pain during actual op, Propofol is my friend.

Sorry for that  I had a much better experience.  I talked it over with my doctor before my surgery and asked for a catheter.  After researching it I found many men had problems after the procedure peeing.  After surgery they were able to but after going home had problem peeing and ended up in the hospital to get a catheter anyway.  I would rather have it put in when I am out they awake.  It was only in for 2 in a half days and when they fulled it I shot it out.  But I was ready. when I left.  I got some male pads just in case. and I am happy I did.  I was not going home I went out.  Within 15 minutes I had to pee so bad that I only got one leg out of the car and my bladder let loose.  It felt like I was peeing for ever.  The pad held it all.  Went in to where I was going and changed.  I was gone all day.  From 8 AM to 11 PM.  I did pee and it did burn but I was fine. I would do it again if I had to.  It has been over 3 years and I am wide open.  That was the first time I had a catheter and went through some of what you dealt with.  The bladder spasm were the worst.  I know when I was laying down and had one the blood clots would come out around the tip of the penis.  Them hurt like h??? but it was only a couple of days.  I wish you well and try to take it easy do not sit for long periods God Bless

      Hi John,

How are you holding up refraining from sex/ejaculation? I'm now 24 days as I type this. Wild differing opinions of when and how often to resume sex/ejaculation.

So it is not just WHEN to resume, but then HOW OFTEN once you do resume. No real consensus. I just want my semen clear from blood again. Don't know who to believe or who's right. Thoughts???

      TY, Michael

Had my urolift 6 mos.ago and still having sporadic getting ups at night e.g.some nights sleep for 4 pee and then sleep for 4 more. Then I'll have nights getting up every 2 hrs. then a 4 hr.stretch of sleep till morning.I'm thinking maybe I should have had 8 stents.

?Made aptment with another urologist...having cystoscopy Thurs. to see how it looks in there.

      Comments from anyone?

Can I ask anyone on this site about testosterone shots?

      Thanks a lot,

Sorry that your having a problem.  Let me ask before you had the Urolift.  Were you getting up at nigh to go to the bathroom It could be habit.  Don't know. And that is true maybe you needed a few more clips.  On the testosterone I don't take the shots.  I do the Testosterone Gel 1 or 2 tube in the morning.  I put it on my shoulders.  Work pretty good   Ken

Hi William - I am on TRT therapy with shots.  Testosterone Cypionate one shot weekly

I was on .75 every 3 weeks but I think the once-a-week is the safer. my brother-in-law does once a week at .5. Is that the dosage that you are shot with. The higher amount raised my hemoglobin up to a dangerous level. he gives himself the shots in the fat of his leg but I've always found out that you have to put it inter muscular. Do you also agree? do they check your blood levels and how often?

      Thanks, Bill
