The Urolift procedure; patient views and questions

Posted , 264 users are following.

Would it be possible to keep this thread purely about Urolift and a means of sharing experiences from those who have undergone the process and invite debate from those considering it.

The Urolift process plus pros and cons are accurately described at many a website. Other very long threads discuss in detail BPH and other treatments such as TURPS, laser tend to overshadow people looking for advice on Urolift.

So for me, tired of getting up in the night. Tired of the medication and its side effects, tiredness and ED. Quality of life getting me down. I am 60 and reckon to be pretty fit and active.

I underwent this treatment (as an alternative to TURPS) 2 weeks ago at one of the 5 or 6 clinics/hospitals that appear to offer this treatment in the UK. It really was as simple as described on the web.

I had a 30 minute consultation with the consultant whereby he explained the procedure.

The treatment was booked for 10 am., it took about 15 minutes. I had it done under a local anaesthetic. To be frank if you are used to having your prostate and other bits probed there is no pain. It is just the thought of it you have to come to terms with. After the treatment you have to drink a lot of water to flush your system but I was allowed to drive home by dinner time.

First warning here. I did have to stop probably every 15 minutes with a sudden need to urinate. Fortunately I took a urine bottle from the clinic !

I could write for ages but will see what response I get to this post. I know on the day I was there, 4 other blokes were having the procedure and I sensed there was a regular flow of patients.

I’m now going through the period whereby I’m asking myself is there any improvement? It’s only 2 weeks in. I’m not sure is the answer at the moment. We are all different and recovery and improvement I am told does take time anything from 2/3 weeks to 2/3 months maybe longer. Your system needs time to readjust, I understand that, I don’t know how much time but I’m due for a follow up next week. I'm remaining positive.Would welcome comments from others.

Had Urolift done at the end of Feb 2018.  Having some back issues and I am scheduled to have an MRI done tomorrow.  Should I be concerned that the MRI could screw with the implants or is this safe?

They should have given you a card to share with the MRI techncian outlining the setting levels.  In short, there are some considerations.

No you should be fine.  Had 2 MRI's last year.  Did they give you a card.  It has the information on the back.  Good luck Ken

I've also had 2 MRIs since urolift with no issues. But, make sure you have the card or other documentation when you go. I didn't for my first MRI and they would not do the MRI without researching it. I had to reschedule for a week later. Good luck.

      Hi Douglas,

RE: you implants and MRI. I've checked with 2 doctors, mine and another. The staples (clips) for the Urolift are called non-ferrous material, i.e. not iron based, so not susceptible to magnetism. Have it done without worry!

Thank you everyone for your feedback.  I did provide the card and info to the imaging center.  I guess I'm just a little bit paranoid considering the initial bad experience I had just after the procedure.  I went into it thinking it would be such an easy thing and recovery.  It was hardly that for me.  Things are much better now.   It's nice to have this board. Thanks again!

I’m new to the forum posting thing. I hope I’m doing this right. I’m 48 and I’m gay. If that puts you off please just scroll to the next post. About 18 months ago, I started experiencing all the symptoms of BPH. I started Tamsulosin 0.2mg and got relief although the sexual side effects were terrible. After 3 months all the urinary symptoms came back so my Tamsulosin dosage was increased to 0.4mg. Once again I got relief. Fast forward to about a month ago when all the original symptoms returned. My urologist recommended urolift. I go next Friday for a cystogram to make sure I’m a good candidate for the urolift. Here’s where my question turns very personal. When it comes to sex I am on the recieving end of anal pleasure. My question is whether that will still be an option after urolift. The implants being on the outside of the prostate implys to me that they would be ‘in the way’ when it comes to anal penetration. Anyone care to share your experience or offer an opinion. Of course I will be discussing this with my urologist, I’m just looking for feedback now.

Good evening.  To most of us on here you are just a man with a question.  I had the Urolift done 3 1/2 years ago.  Still wide open and no side effects.  The urolift clips will go on the prostate  There is a anal wall so it would not bother you or your partner during sex or touch anything going in or coming out.  Have a great day  Ken.

I have been taking tamsolusin for several year generally at night in order to reduce the timse I have to get up to urinate. Now I am trying to go without it simply by stopping to drink anything after 7 pm. I am wondering if I can regain some of the sexual function I lost during the time I was taking Tamsulosin.

Good evening Evdilos  How long have you been on Tamsolusin.  It may take a while for you to get it back but you should in time.  I was on Flomax and Rapaflo before I have my Urolift done.  Been 3 1/2 years and still wide open and no side effects.  Look into it.  It will be worth your time  Take care  Ken

I took Tamsulosin and Finasteride for 6+ years.  I had the Urolifit procedure and stopped the meds at the same time.  Sexual function came back to pre-med level within a few weeks.  It may have been sooner but I was in too much discomfort from the procedure to test it any sooner All those years I blamed my low libido on getting older- it was the pills. Never again.  Good luck.

George.  I heard that from another man.  The doctor blamed his procedure.  I forgot what pill he was on but he took it for like 5 years.  I went on and looked it up and told him that the pill he was on cause sexual problem and low libido.  He told his doctor and this doctor told him that he did not know that.  He gave him a pill that he know nothing about.  He stopped it and got better after it.  You should all ways check the side effects of any pill you get  Ken

Thanks again Ken for all your inputs and that you're well with your Urolift as of 3 1/2 years now.Last I posted you I was to have a cystoscopy which showed 1 out of 4 stents had moved out of prostate and was hanging out nearby.I'm scheduled to see new urologist again Wed. I was going to ask him if he would repair and put in 2 more stents as my Urolift was fairly recent and getting up at night less times wasn't consitent.

Appreciate your comments and have you ever heard of a request like

      this?

      Best regards,

      ?Bill
