Thigh muscle cramp

I have often had calf muscle cramp, but this is easily dealt with by walking about. However, last night I had a thigh muscle cramp which was far more acute than anything I had had before. The pain was excruciating and lasted ten minutes. My face went grey and I almost fainted. I couldn't walk and massaging seemed to have little effect.

This cramp is totally unlike any other. The pain makes it absolutely impossible to move once it starts. I can't take a step. By the way I am not overweight and eat a very healthy diet, not much alcohol and limited caffeine. I excercise and do my best to stay hydrated,

one positive is that last night I had an 'oh no' moment when I though it was starting but it did not lead to anything. I have been doing frog stretches ( bend one knee and stretch the other to the side, foot up). Who knows- it may even work.

I agree that once the spasm starts, there is no stopping it.  And you can't move or you are afraid to.  I always just suffered through it, but my sister tries different things.  She'll try to walk it off, but that doesn't work.  Her husband massages the area, but that doesn't work either.  In fact, she'll be black and blue in that spot the next day.  If your spasms are like mine, that 'oh no' moment can be avoided if you straighten out your legs quickly while pushing outwards.  That's why I can't even sleep under the covers.  The weight of the blanket prevents me from getting that outward stretch.

I always try to straighten out my legs with the outward stretch before I roll over or getting out of bed, or even getting up from a nap on the couch.  When I forget to do that, I get that twinge and I know I'm in trouble.  If I'm lucky, the stretch will prevent the spasms.

Have you found an absolute prevention for these thigh cramps? Anyway, I've been getting them recently after veggie diet and 15 lb weight loss! Have it know but under control as I have found what temporary relieve them!!!! Leap out of bed (God awful), bend over, and walk as best and fast as I can still bent over, and get Ice pack and pain killer. I would say it's the ice pack directly on it cause it works almost instantly before any medical can! Yes, I do scream and cry on my way for ice pack and I'm not a cryer....only thing that WORKED.

When i feel or suspected it coming on during the day I take a pain killer before bed and ready with my Godiva ice pack on night stand. This has helped to reduce how painful we all know it can get.

My first one , I was ready to go to hospital.

I've posted before, but wanted to ask if anyone else has experienced something new that happened.. I've tried absolutely everything suggested on this site, from the stretches, to magnesium, water, potassium, ice, heat, I eat healthy, don't take any perscription drugs, never drink, don't smoke, etc..you name it, I've tried it. I can go a year without one, then without warning, yikes, it's there..

I had this happen a few weeks ago and it was a doosey. I got up out of my chair after relaxing a few hours watching tv and it started.. I stumbled to the door to let the dog out, stood outside on the porch bent over, pushing on the muscle, doing everything I could think of to stop it. My husband looked out the door and came out saying what can I do, tell me how to help you.. Of course, as you all know, it's hard to even speak a word while having one of these things.. I just kept saying, you can't help.. It finally subsided after maybe 15 minutes..

But what is wierd is, for about ten days afterwards, I had constant "twinges" in my thigh.. You all know what I mean.. It's that feeling you get when you know it's coming.. Only this time, I was getting them every 10 minutes or so, but they didn't turn into the full blown thing..They were painful, but more like a calf cramp feels, not horrendous. It was like having labor pains in my thigh!

At first I made sure to stay home out of fear of the twinge turning into the horrendous cramp, but eventually, I just went about my business, having these things over and over again.. After a week, they became less frequent until they finally stopped.. But so weird! I've been having these cramps for 16 years and this is the first time I've had this type of after event. Normally, I have a cramp, my leg is a little sore for a couple of days, but it's uneventful and doesn't stop me from doing whatever. This was just weird. Wondered if any of you have ever experienced this... rolleyes

I don't get the twinge exactly, but I do get something...it's like that muscle is letting me know it's there.  And yes, after a spasm my leg can be sore for several days afterwards.  My physical therapist said that is from a severe muscle spasm.

I feel your pain!  I, too, get thigh cramps which feel almost like they are in my vein.  The first was so excruciatingly painful, I couldn't even speak to ask for help.  The cramps seem to corelate with strenous exercise that day and, perhaps, not drinking enough.  Upon some research, I started taking Magnisium daily to help prevent them entirely.  They have been few and far between since.  Someone mentioned taking tonic which, by the way, contains quinine which I've read is good for cramps.  When I got my cramp last night, it happened upon standing after sitting on the sofa for a bit (like my first one).  I immediately got a giant glass of water and a Gatorade type drink.  It didn't last as long and it wasn't as bad as my first but it's still quit painful.  I've also read that yellow mustard helps prevent (some athletes take a spoonful prior to their sport) and cidar vinegar.  Haven't tried either of those but thought I'd put it out there.

Thanks for your response ~ I think that cider vinegar goes along with the pickle juice I take.  Someone said it was the vinegar in the pickle juice that worked.  I've started using spray Magnesium also and rub on the bottom of my feet when I go to bed.  I'm not sure if it helps with the cramps but it helps me sleep better.  But something's working and I'm thankful.  And I drink Diet Tonic Water also - because of the quinine.  So we'll just keep doing whatever we can.  Those muscle spasms/cramps are the absolute worst pain ever.  I hope you're finding some relief and comfort too.  Best to you and thanks again for reaching out.

Just wanted to say mine started last year and about 6 months ago I found this sight while searching for a cure.  Finally I did the Magneseum, D3 and B12 which seemed to help also I only drink water and at least 80 oz a day if not more but what really helped me was someone mentioned that sleeping in the fetal position maybe part of the problem.  I have slept that way my whole life.  I switched to sleeping on my back which at first made the cramps only happen 1 or twice a week now I can't tell you the last time I had one maybe 2 months and still going.  I really hope you can find what works for you.  I guess I got lucky and every time I turn on my side I quickly remember that pain and go back on my back.  Good Luck

I believe you can sleep fetal, but just make sure you straighten out your legs before turning or rising.  You muscles are overshortened while legs are bent so stretch them out before movement.  Well, that is what my physical therapist told me.  It seems to work for me.

I rarely get mine in bed but usually after sitting on the sofa and after I have worked out.  Since I sweat a lot while working out, I am trying to find a way to replenish better.  I drink a lot of water and started with Body Armour (like Gatorade) after working out.  I probably need potassium but I don't like banana's.  Sweet potatoes contain potassium and I think coconut water as well.  I also take Mag and D3 and B12.  Since I've started running (past month) I find that I have had more leg cramps.  Nothing as severe as before but I can feel them coming on.  Seems if it get up and move, walk, stretch, it helps, so I try to not sit as long.  I did relieve one cramp by massaging the thigh and flexing my feet as I felt it coming on.
