Thigh pain after hip replacement

Posted , 9 users are following.

i have had both hips replaced by the anterior approach. One in August 2015 and the next in January 2016. Surgical results are great!  Recovery uneventful. Now I am experiencing thigh pain that radiates from the outside of my thigh to my knee. Especially when I do a lot of walking. Anyone else have this problem?

i used to get that, i had my 2nd op in november 2015, and first one was may 2015, and both times when i did a lot of walking i used to get muscle pain, i think it is just the muscles that you have not used for a while, and 6 months is still classed as early, they say you aree fully recovered after a year

Sounds like bursitis had my LTHR year ago this month all fine except what you describe had more physio ,just been back to consultant had a cortisone injection hope it will help go back in Aug if no better N

MRI Scan.  At the moment no different had it week today perhaps it has to kick in. Totally honest fed up being sore all the time especially when walking on pavements for more than 60metres gets really sore.  Fingers crossed you get something sorted.

I just had my hip done on May 18 th.Things were going well until I picked up a bag of laundry at daw 19.Though I respected the 90 degree, and did not bend far and put it on my Rollator so that actually took the weight of the laundry, the act of picking it up must of done something. My pain level went from a 4 to a level of 9.I was actually sweating and nauseated from the pain,I iced all day yesterday..Last night I could get into bed by myself but it was still bad.It had gone down about 30%..Will keep posting. Some folks have said they have experienced thigh pain several weeks out

    Stem pain?

The stem is the piece that is inserted into the femur and holds the ball. A certain percentage will have some sort of bone pain at the lower end of the stem about at mid thigh when walking

I think that may be where I hurt my leg.Its been 5 days since I picked up that sack of laundry. It got increasingly more painful, emu sting mid groin and radiating down my thigh.I can move it fine.Despite icing it I do notice it appears edematous at the top of my thigh and radiating laterally toward the incision.I don't hear any clicking or popping of any sort but it is distinctly more painful.Does not appear red but feels a little warm to the touch. My OS will be back in town this weekend and I have an appt Monday.I just almost feel like the pressure exerted during the lift put pressure against the inside of the femur by that stem and that is the source and cause of this pain.I just hope it starts to resolve.Im 57,work full time and felt that at 19 days out I could pick up that sack of laundry if I used good body mechanics.I was obviously wrong.Im paying for it now.Argh.Im doing ice, alternating NSADs ,pain meds and a small dose of muscle relaxer.Any other suggestions other than a magic wand or a time machine?

Try the fast forward button ....

Sorry you feel this back sliding as I know it must be discouraging.

I hope it resolves with nothing further needed but very glad you are seeing your surgeon to check it out.

      Good luck with this.

Thank you for replying Linda and your encouragement.I have been really taking it easy the last 5 days, only doing foot pumps and glut work as I don't want to do anything that will cause further irritation to the thigh.I talked to my sister who works for orthopedic surgeons and she said I might of loosened something and that he will probably do an x-Ray.It definitely felt better last night, and I could get in bed with use of my walker.Did not need my husbands help.I was also able to move myself around in bed ,get centered a little better.I just took Tylenol before bed and the pain did not wake me during the night.Im sitting up in bed right now and I do notice that same area hurts, but just like a mild thudding, nothing much. Will do another day of quiet before seeing OS tomorrow. At least it seems to be improving a little.

Must be frustrating ... I am only 17 weeks post but pre- and post- surgery had significant problems caused by the IT band which stretches from around the hip joint to just below the knee. It caused similar pain but also incredible tightness at any time.

If it is this, you may be able to tell by running your fingers along the area toward the knee. It would feel very tight and painful.

Good luck and keep us posted so that we learn from you ... everything helps.

You are exactly right. The area is sensitive to touch and feels sore. I wonder what can help - massage, more PT?

Both Nonny! There is roller aid that really helped (think of a thin rolling pin with a series of rotating rings) that you roll down your thigh to just past the knee applying as much pressure as you can stand. Do it as long and as frequently as you can because it requires breaking down scar tissue in the fascia along ths band. It takes a couple of weeks of concerted work but really did the job. Oh ...it helps if you use a heating pad to warm the area before. And I found that heat helped with the pain on its own as well. Talk to your PT for advice as there are other methods as well. Acupuncture did not help me with this even after several treatments.

Best wishes for recovering from this.

I had that treatment when I was undergoing physical therapy after the surgery.  It was excruciating!  But i will purchase one of those rolling pins and try again.  Just a question since I gather that this is a UK site - do any surgeons in the UK do this procedure in the anterior approach? My recovery was so much faster.  Google it. I was up and about the evening after the surgery and went home the next day using only a cane. This surgery requires special training and a special surgical table. It's amazing.

Hi - check first with your PT to be sure that is what you are dealing with. I agree that it is painful treatment, but by the same token, I could feel it working and helping to loosen the tightness and scar tissue, be sure to use heat before as it helps.

Re anterior approach - I think they have it in England. I live in Canada and while you can get it , surgeons trained in it are far and few.
