Thigh pain after knee replacement
Posted , 4 users are following.
I had a knee replacement exactly 21 days ago and I did not take any pain medications throughout the recovery process but I am curious as to anybody possibly having a pain in their thigh area. Is this a common occurrence? Is this something that will pass eventually? If you have any input I would be extremely grateful.

Hi. Great to hear you are doing well after only 3 weeks. And coping without pain meds. I am 5 months post op, and still experience a lot of tightness in the knee, along with pain /discomfort in the thigh area, which extends right into my groin. It's not pain as much as it is discomfort from the tight quads. I am a lot better than I was, but far from where I want to be!
Best of luck with your recovery.

exactly the same i had no pain at all and even now 5 weeks in still no pain however i did have an ache in thigh area apparently this is because they have to put a tournaquet around the leg very tightly to stop excessive bleeding during the op.
so a lot of internal bruising on a cery big muscle mine healed up after 31/2 weeks

good news let me ask you this then. I am walking well over 2 miles on some days and pushing myself with the excercises daily. Should i slow down? I have been super motivated and people are amazed to see me walking without a limp but some say to not over do it.

Distance and time don't matter; it's the STEPS that count since they put the load on the knee. Get a pedometer; the software will track your step count every day and graph your progress. Push it too far any given day and you will suffer "balloon knee". Back off, ice, elevate...then check the step count that got you in trouble. Reduce slightly and then increase gradually. I did 8,500 steps at 5 weeks and really, REALLY paid for it. I took the gradual approach and got up to 11,000 steps after 8 months. It just takes time...and patience.

You are now 21 days into the typical 365-day TKR recovery. You have a looooong way to go. Very few escape this path back to normality. See if this addresses your oh-so-normal pain issues...
Other Pain
After you get your ROM back, this is the best way to avoid all other pain...
Muscle Rebuild
Takes months. Cannot be rushed and is mandatory for a full recovery.

Thank you Chico. I will take heed to your advice and believe me I am not getting discouraged, I have been extremely motivated in fact. After two years of suffering in pain while working construction I feel like this TKR is a cake walk. I have exceeded all expectations at this point and the doctor says I am four weeks ahead of schedule so this is a good thing. Thank you once again.

All of us truly hope you're an exception. I completely rehabbed a hip replacement in 6 weeks, 5 hours a day, 6 days a week. Done. I thought the knee would be the same... Then I hit The Brick Wall of Expectations!!! I even told my bandmates that I'd do a 4-hour gig that weekend. DELUSIONAL!!! I needed the typical full year to recover.
Everyone is different...people have to remember that. Even a single person will very likely have different experiences (for better or worse) when they get #2 done. Each instance is completely separate.
Just remember to do the muscle rebuild to get all your strength back. Takes time, work and patience. Good luck.
