Thigh prickling pain only at night anyone?

Posted , 8 users are following.

Hello, I am 9 weeks post op anterior hip replacement and I have been troubled and disturbed mostly at night over the last week or so, with very prickly nerve pain almost like small electric shocks. The pain wakes me up and lasts for 10 - 15 minutes at a time. Sometimes 2 or 3 times a night too. I am wondering if anyone else has this experience. Thank you for reading!

    Hi Anna

Yes it's the worst side affect not being able to sleep. Tingling is just all your nerves healing (I think). Had this alot like you.

I am 6 months post RHR and occasionally still get this. Was told that there are 6 layers of stitches when you have hip replacement. So I suppose it's only to be expected. I still get some Tingling now but is more like an itch now.

    Hope this helped.

    Merry Christmas Julie

Thanks for reply Julie, reading replies like yours makes me feel much better. I was thinking the worse of course, eg trapped femoral nerve or something horrible, mainly because it has just recently got much worse. I guess I will just need patience. Merry Christmas to you too!

    Hi Ann

Sorry to hear about your prickly nerve pain. Yes i certainly can identify with that, its exactly what i described soon after the LHTR while still in hospital, and continued for about the 1st 4 weeks just in bed. Not a pleasant feeling at all & definitely kept me awake.

Im 6 weeks post now & doing very well, driving again & mostly no crutch. Yet last night was a bad night, unusual for me now, think ive overdone it

So dont worry, its all part of the massive healing process we all have to go through.

All the best for a painfree Christmas!

Thanks for your reply Margaret, it's good to know it is sort of a normal healing process. Trouble is, there was just a small saucer size area a couple of weeks go, but now it is a much bigger area, more like dinner plate size! sad

Hi Ann, I had an infection post RTHR 15months ago. At around 5months I was diagnosed with nerve damage. I had Amitryptaline for a month and it sorted it out. I was in awful pain immediately after the op but everyone thought it was me not coping even though I have a high pain threshold.

recently had foot op and everyone cannot believe it when I say pain is neglible. After all I went through with hip. It's minor. Hip is great now but get a twinge every now and again. As others have said full recovery takes up to two years x

Oh, that sounds like you have struggled a bit with pain and infection then finding out you have nerve damage as well. Hope all is well now and it was all worth it in the end. I can believe you when you say recovery may take a couple of years!

Yes Ann all is fine and my hip is fantastic. We all heal at different rates and should not compare ourselves to others. Took my nerve on part of my scar 12 months to come back to life.  I never walked with a stick after coming off of crutches but know lots who do. Look at the small differences that happen it gives you a boost xx

Hi Ann yes i have the very same pain, its like having a tens machine on your leg, but i also have a dead leg feeling in the day. My surgeon says its due to the pressure and the hammering they do, it upsets the nerves and can take a long time to settle down, and sometimes it dosn't you have to live with it. I must admit after 3months, its not bothering me quite so much.Hope you cope with it and maybe it will return to it normal feel.

Hi Gail, I didn't have it at my six week check up so didn't mention it to my surgeon. Would you mind letting me know what your surgeon says it is? I'd be very interested in knowing...thanks x
