HI i had my a thr in late nov,I was apprehnsive, but do admit to having some help by having a little hypnotherapy from afriend which did help,I wanted my life back and vowed to be positive throughout had an epidural, also was given ear phones, listened to Frank Sinatra and some classical music sailed through the op and was home before i knew it, i knew ir wouldent be easy but kept positive, with the help of my husband and good friends the 6 six weeks came and went, came off the pain killers after 7 days, gradually walking more and more on my crutches, resting when I could and sleeping when i could, sleeping on your back is far from ideal, but now I walk without any crutches at home and one when I am out, friends are amazed,so I will say,try and keep positive the operation will change your life believe me,you will not regret it Good luck!

    Hi

I've had 2 THR's and all I can say is do as your told  LOL

Do the exercises beforehand and afterwards that you are given.

Stick to the instructions your consultant and physio give you and the 6 weeks will be over in no time

Do the exercises as instructed before your op and do the ones advised after the op to strengthen your muscles.  It does help.  Do as you are told by the hospital, take it easy at first and don't be too impatient with your recovery.  If you want the best results and quickest recovery, do as you are told.  I did not need to take painkillers at all a week after my surgery, it was quite wonderful not to be in pain.  Get friends to give you a hand if need be, they can be marvellous.  Get yourself a "grabber", they are a great help in getting yourself dressed and wear loose clothing at first, track suits are a boon as the trousers are easy to get on and off with a grabber.  Don't be scared, it will soon be all over.  I had an epidural and a light sedative and felt great after the op with no ill effects.  In fact I had tea and toast about an hour after the op, so don't be frightened and relax.

Hope this helps but I had the THR op on the monday, had the week off work and was back working the following monday (advantage of home office work). First week with two crutches, second week with one crutch and none in third although walking with a limp. Beginning of fourth week walked two miles and then realised at the end I was pain free which was 21 days after the op. I ensured I followed the exrcise patterns supplied by the hospital and all going well. I trust your experience is similar

    Best wishes

    Hi bluemoomin,

I am a single mother too, actually adopted and raise my 3 granddaughters, and had both hips done and am on the verge of a revision next month. I do not know how old your child(ren) is but mine have learned to help me in many ways. Women from my church brought meals for the first 2 weeks post op and that helped.

Ahead of time I cleaned and organized my home and made sure everything I would need or eat was put in an easy to reach place with no bending or reaching. I set my bed side toilet up and borrowed a slide in shower chair. I bought a basket for my walker so I could carry things while I walk from room to room.

All pathways into house and inside house need to be clutter free to prevent tripping. My girls are messy so this was a constant battle! Keep loose clothing on hand and I chose to hang out in comfortable gowns/dresses so I would not have to try to get pants on.

For a couple of exercises post op that are done while laying in bed, I used a plastic trash bag for easy sliding back and forth.

These are just some things that helped me. We are here anytime you need us. Everyone is quite wonderful! Wish you the best!

Me too- had to keep working to keep my girls at Uni. You will be pain free at once.

You will have to sleep on your back. You will be out of bed the next day or even the same day. The shower is the worse with the zi,,er frame. I did my foot exercises in bed and drank lots of water. Did EVERYTHING they told me to do, saw it as a challenge. I walked up to the xray when everyone else was in a wheel chair- small little successes.Never pushed it past the recommended level. Went up stairs foot by foot. With my left hip I got in to my automatic car and escaped after 3 weeks. Right hip was 6 weeks. I did all the walking suggested and swam when advised to. I did take maximum time off work that was paid- it paid off as I could exercise in the day. Never give up the exercises. 10 years on I do Yoga and Pilates and swim and walk. Good luck and please write how good you feel here when it`s done.

    HI Bluemoomin.

There's no speedy recovery, you'll just have to follow you body. I know it's hard being on you own but am sure there're people that can help you, for the first 6 weeks you'll need lots of help. It's a slow healing progress, once you have the replacement you dont want to redo the op so you'll just hav to follow the instructions from your consultant and Phys.

    Good Luck

I agree very strongly with Carmen... Determination and following all the drs and psios instructions as well as taking supplements and 2200 calories a day. My doc said UR body need exta calories to heal.

It will be the best decision u will ever make. After a few months UR life will return to no extreme pain, no limp & doing the things u love to do!
