THR at last!!

Posted , 13 users are following.

Well I've eventually had my THR last Thursday and got out  of hospital yesterday.  Everything went brill although they said they had a few problems during the op re: bleeding and the old hip being in a worse condition than they anticipated.  I feel very battered and bruised and my operated leg looks like an oak tree but I'm ok and still smiling.  My consultant has said in the past that he can't help all my OA problems - as in my spine  etc.-   but he will replace anything I need when it arises and no way will I be terrified anymore.  So anyone about to have theres - it is scary but believe me you can cope with it - believe me if I can anyone can!!! biggrin xx

    Well done, bet you're glad it is all over! Take it easy, be prepared for the odd set-back (but nothing you can't cope with) when you are getting better - it is amazing how your body lets you know when you have overdone it, udisn't it? Lots of rest, gentle exercise, and a positive attitude (you have 100% on the last one!)

      Thankyou Jean x I believe in 'baby steps' and have learnt by reading discussions on here that's it's not a good idea to do too much too soon x

    My hubby Roy has just had day 5 post op and like you his leg is very swollen with lots and lots of bruising.  Had to get the District Nurse out to check his wound which had bled over the weekend.  Thankfully the wound isn't showing any infection but Nurse thought the blood was old and dry so probable cause could have been journey home on day 2.  Take it easy as a close friend of ours said "crawl, walk, run"  xx

      By reading many posts here I am sensing that they don't use drains that much in the UK. I had mine done in France and I had a drain in for 2 maybe 3 days. I have no idea if this is the difference but I had no swelling or really even bruising at all. AFTER SURGERY MY LEGS LOOKED THE SAME ONLY DIFFERENCE WAS MY RIGHT LEG HAD AN INCISION. oops sorry for caps

    We're in the UK and in the exercise leaflet give by the Physio has the "butt squeezes" crossed out and verbal instruction NOT to do them was given?

      I've been told not to do the "butt squeezes" but I don't know why? But if they are saying no there must be a good reason for it.  My leg is still quite swollen - an oak tree comes to mind! - but I was told this is normal.  I'm now 12 days post op and I'm doing a little more each day.  I get my staples out on Thursday but so far so good x  Tell your hubby to do the same as me - baby steps cause his body willl tell hime when he's ready for more xx

      Hi ..

      Glute sets seem to be a very insignificant exercise after most THR. The butt cheek squeezes can make or break rehab. They actually set the tone for your "back door" strength. However, because surgery techniques and protocols frequently change, it's not always best right after surgery .

      The first few exercises after hip surgery will include the simple exercise - and for a very good reason. Almost every one of your new exercises don't require your butt muscle to work at all! You may be wondering why... partly because it's the strongest muscle below your UR belt.

      The glutes play a large roll in helping you climb steps and getting out of a chair. If the glute muscles extend the hip, then go up steps and standing up from a chair demand hip extension from bent (or flexed position) to at least a straight leg position. Weak glutes and quads among other core muscles get this job done for you.

      I am sure UR squeezes will resume soon as the main reason for the delay is bone growth allowance. This is time needed in some joint devices to form a secure tight fit and to stabilize the implant. There r several other protocols UR dr can best give u according to device and surcigical technique.

      At any rate we need those gluteus to get back that swing in our hips.

    Well, I have read a lot of the comments on this web, and it has not been very consoling.

    I am due to have a right hip replacement 14th August. They intend to do it with part porcelain and part plastic (some excellent hard plastic I am told). I am 62, healthy diet, fit, etc..now this. I have been on crutches now for 3 months and am beginning to lose muscle strength and height in my right leg

    Yes I am scared, and like everyone else, heard good and bad results.

    They did not check my left hip - is this normal to check out only the problem side?

    I also have a prolapsed disc, and ot sure if this has been taken into consideration - I have asked.

    I suffered a lot 3 months ago and the cortizone injection helped. I copy with the discomfort, but not looking forward to not sleeping and not being able to sleep on my side etc.etc. Although I can not walk without the crutches, feel that I almost have a life, though not the same as 3 months ago.

    I pray that it well get better and will try to be positive, though I do not like some of the comments on this site.

      Please try not to worry although I know it's hard not to.  You need to remember that everybody is different and I feel some people here push themselves to hard hence the negative remarks sometimes.  It's not a race and your body will let you know when/if you do too much.  Listen to the doctors, nurses and physios as they are the experts.  I am doing well and taking each day as a time.  I won't lie the lack of sleep is horrible although that will come in time and if you can't sleep try and rest through the day.  I'm 12 days in now and last night was the first night I've slept for more than 3 hours.  Don't let the negative comments on here worry you as there are more positives than negatives.  I hope all goes well for you and remember 'baby steps' xxx

      Hi Anne

      Dont let the negative comments worry you. There are so many good results. Everyone is completely different. You listen to your body, your physiotherapist, your doctor or whoever and that first 6 weeks when you have the restrictions will soon be over.

      I've had 2 successful THR's....I dont know if you have read about my fracture 4 weeks into recovery but that had nothing to do with the THR they discovered I had osteoporosis and thats why I got a fracture so easily.

      Yes I'll admit sleeping on my back was awful.....I challenge anyone to say they liked it.....its things like that where you come on and ask for help......about being propped up, certain ways to arrange your pillows etc After 6 weeks {UK anyway....not sure where you are} you can sleep on your side.

      I sometimes think that sites like this.....once people have successful THR's they dont come back.....no need to....no questions to ask. So they just disappear. Its the ones that have problems that stay {mostly}

      Just remember everyone is different, heals at a different rate, take it easy its not a race.

      Love

      Eileen {UK}

      Hi. I have a feeling you don't live in the Uk as Etanercept is not a drug which is freely prescribed here as a general injection. There is a mass of criteria before funding can be applied for to your local Clinical Commissioning Group and it's usually given in cycles under the care of a consultant. I was on Etanercept (Enbrel) for years for my rheumatoid arthritis but we had to go through some hoops to get it as it's very expensive.

      I'm in the US. The bio drug is very expensive here and there r protocol before insurance will cove it here. Also the pharm co that produces Embril

      also has a program for those who have no insurance or funds to pay for treatment.

      i took it for RA as well. It is online for treatments for back pain and videos .

      Keep me posted.

      I agree with you about not pushing youself beyond what feels safe/right for you. I didn't do any exercizes practically at all. Physical therapy (France) involved the PT massaging my leg.

      Once I realized I really needed the pain medication tosleep and took it, I got better quicker. Initially (2) at 400mg paracetemal + 25 mg codeine. Once I controlled my pain with pain medication I got better.

      I had my surgery which was the side surgery not done through the butt, basically May 1st. Wednesday I got back from a vacation in Spain where I walked a lot every day, one day 10 miles, and other than fatigue because of all that waking, no problems at all. I still have a little difficulty finding a comfortable position at night in bed bt not a huge deal. My scar which earlier had seemed so "thick" has thinned put nicely and continues to thin out. I would have never been able to have that great vacation with my pld hip so I am glad I had it done. I didn't really feel that the healing had taken hold until about the 5th week so my advice is to not push it, let your body heal do not feel guilty or bad if your recovery seems longer than what others post. You will get there, healing will happen and when you are more healed you can make more rapid progress. In the course of maybe 5-6 days I went from using a walker, to using 2 canes, to using 1 cane to using no canes. I progressed that rapidly because this didn't happen until aound week 4 or 5.

      I agree Jodie everyone is different and everyone heals at their own rate.  Your holiday sounds like it was fab.  I'm going to Vegas in November and can't wait to be able to walk around without crying in pain x
